Tire 55 foot by 60 foot addition to the 12 foot by 64 foot original processing plant built in 1984 brings the total square footage of the turkey farm operation to 71,000 square feet. Hayter got a humble start in the turkey business in 1948 when at an auction sale he purchased a 10 foot by 12 foot colony house from neighbour Miss Edna Willert who now resides in Mitchell. She had raised turkeys for many years. For a couple of years he had helped his neighbour in killing and plucking turkeys at Christmas time and that's where his interest in the popular fowl began. . Times -Advocate, August 19, 1987 Page 15A expand to process plant Harry Hayter continues now as president of the large operation with son Tom as vice-president and daughter Joanne Maguire as secretary and in charge of the retail store which is located at the front of the processing plant. - Close to 50,000 turkeys are raised each year on the Hayter farm, located in Stephen township, just west of the police village of Dashwood. Hayter's are alloted q quota of 1,300,000 pounds per year by the Cana- dian Turkey Marketing Agency. Harry ilayter• explains the quota system, "The system was originated in 1971 and was based on the best one year of production for the --years 1966-67-68. We are restricted to 69 per- cent of our quota. Next year it is be- ing increased to 71 percent." Ontario has a 42 percent share of the Canadian turkey market and pro- ducers in this province have quotas of. 105 million pounds. As a somewhat larger than average producer, Hayter's have close to one percent of Ontario quota among the -150 pro- ducers in roducersin the province. Hayter continued, "Ontario should have a larger share of the Canadian quota, but it's hard for the provinces to agree. The marketing board has been very instrumental in providing more constant markets and prices." In. talking about the -processing plant, Tom Ilayter said, "Turkey con- sumption increased by six percent in 1986 and I expect it will rise by another eight percent this year. Whole turkey sales may be down a bit, but processed products are becoming very popular" and selling well. He continued. "Turkey along with chicken and fish are on many diet menus. This food is easy to digest." In the processing plant. Hayter's produce sausage. steaks, ground turkey. burger patties, cutlets and schnitzel. Customers may also pur- chase whole birds, legs. thighs, wingtips. wingsticks, drurhsticks, bone -in breasts, breast roasts and giblets in the retail store which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. six days a week with Friday closing at 7 p.m. The worst year for the Hayter turkey business was in 1971 when 9,000 toms died on range because of ex- treme heat. Harry Hayter recalls. "The start of June was very cool and dry and then all of a sudden the heat come and there wasn't much we could do about it." A few days ago Ontario's Minister Jack Riddell announced that Ilayter Turkey Farms were receiving a grant in the amount of $16,413 to be used to help improve food processing plants. in making the announcement Rid- dell said. "These grants will help pro- cessors inlrease exports of finished goods. replace food imports and create new jobs in Ontario. When food processors expand their business they will use more locally grown products which is good for the province's food • industry -. • Tom Ilayter said the recent grant came for use in the expansion of their food processing plant which is -just being completed.
