HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1987-08-19, Page 22Page 4A Times -Advocate, August 19, 1987 Exeter softball hosts tourney Kirkton, Hensall Bantams 'A' champs Exeter Minor softball hosted the an- nual Usborne Minor Ball Bantam tournament on the weekend, drawing nine girls teams and five boys teams to the South Huron Rec Centre com- plex for three days of fastball. • Kirkton Bantams captured the 'A' title in the girls division after edging out of llibbert in a game that.aaw 56 runs go across the plate. Despite the high score, the game remained close through -out and Kirkton pulled out the win by. just two runs.. The final score was 29-27, The 'A' final took more than three hours to play. Ilensall Bantams became the 'A' champions in the boys division when they defeated-Usborne orae Bantams 7-3 Sunday afternoon. • Ilensall pilcher Chris Campbell struck out ten batters to deliver his team the trophy. Campbell allowed just four hits in the effort. Losing pitcher was Jeff ltowe. The last time a Henson Bantam boys team won the 'A' final of the tournament was 1979. The 'B' championship in the bxiys division went to Staffa Bantams after they handed Huron Park a 4-3 loss Sunday afternoon. Staffa recovered from a one run deficit in the sixth inning to tie the garne 2-2. Neither team was able to out -gun the other until the eighth in- ning when Staffa managed the only unanswered run of the game. • The Bantam girls bats heated up in the 'B' championship final of the Usborne tourney Sunday afternoon and as'a prelude -to the 'A' final. Usborne played to a 39-31 win over Crediton. Jayne Rowe and Sheryl Oke both picked up seven bits in seven at- tempts at bat to lead Usborne to the win. Rowe was also the winning pitcher while Aimee Glavin took the loss for Crediton. - Ilensall took a -four run lead in the first inning and then addeof to it with another run in the fourth. Usborne was only able to score one run in the third. • Hensall • added one ran in the fifth and one in the sixth to counter two Usborne runs in the sixth inning. That gave thein a secure win. A STORMY FINISH — This Kirkton Bantam team came out on top to win the girls 'A' final of the Usborne annual Minor Ball tourney, hosted by Exeter Minor Softball despite a� major rain delay. Missing are Bob Wilhelm (coach), Connie Wilhelm, Diane Hender- son and Tina Hawkins. - - HENSALL AND HOME — Patrick Ducharme rounds third on his way home during the'A' final of the Usborne annual Minor Ball Bantam tourney hosted by Exeter Minor Softball on the weekend. Hensall won the game 7-3. Bileski wins in Win.qham Rob Bileski wrapped up a--four- tournament week -with a first place finish al the %Vingham Golf Club Fri- day, beating out 60 competitors to take the title. The 18 -year-old golfer had a' few bogies and birdies along the way but course management was the key to victory. Spurred on by a recent win at the Exeter Golf and Country Club Junior tourney and two third place finishes at competitions held earlier in the week, Bileski managed the Wingham course well, keeping the hall on the fairways and hitting the greens in regulation. Despite rainy conditions, he came up with a 72 to clinch the tourney. Monday, Bileski Tot 74 to place ►ti.`. third out of 120 players at the Woodstock Golf Club tournamerft. Ile followed that performance with another third place finish in the Goderich men's tournament. • Bileski was two under par on the front nine holes and was faced with a 15 foot putt on the last hole which he needed to tie the game. He lipped out and then missed a three footer coin- ing back the other way. That forced him to settle for third place out of 180 golfers with a 71. At the Ingersoll Golf Club Thurs- day, Bileski shot a 79 to finish tenth out of 120 players. CHAMPION BANTAMS - - This Hensall squad won the boys 'A' division title of the Usborne annual Minor Ball Bantam tourney held in Exeter on the weekend. Glen ( Buck) Thompson picked up Men's, ladies' Ironwood clubs Will Chishohn won out on a count - back for 'A' flight low gross last Tues- day night at Ironwood's Men's Club. F rillowing closely was Stu Ifomuth. Winner of low net was 13ob F'letcher's :32. - Winner of 'B' flight and actual.win- ner overall was Don Currell's one over par 36. Next in low gross was 13i11 Chisholm and Larry Wein. 'A' net of :13 by Bill Farquhar was good for low net honours. Ken Varlet'• produced 'A' Iow score of 41 to win 'C' flight -followed by Frank Dul5arry and Larry Brosel. A fine net score of 31 by Jeff La - mond narrowly beat newcomer John Murray. Topping out 'D' flight honours were Scott McPherson in low gross pnd Craig Webber in low net. Close hehind"in low gross was Doug Johnson anti Barry Mills. while Andy Deboer was runner-up.in low net. Karen Bowerman carne in with the lowest score of 44. Lowest punts was captured by Helen Burton with an impressive 14. Rhonda Manore won highest putts witha29. There was a five way tie for the highest score on any hole: Elsie Hermann. Ginger Weber, .lane Brooks. Luccie Seralore and Betty Coates all scored an .11. - I(idtlen Scores went to Mary Butler on a count hack and Mildred Chambers. Kay Webb Hole -in -one There were at least two who couldn't miss in the Exeter, Grand Bend area this week. Kay Webb of Zurich got a hole -in - one at hole number four of the Iron- wood Golf course Wednesday when she drove. a Pennacle number four ball .116 yards with an eight iron. Witnesses to the event were Ethel Desjardine, Grand Bend, Helen Vine. London, and Bernice Webb. Grand Bend. Bill Chandler of Dashwood also shot a hole -in -one this week. Chandler drove the hall 206 yards to get the hole -in -one on hole number nine at the Bayview Golf Club, north of Grand Bend. The ninth hole 'al that golf course has a par three. The shot was witnessed by Bob Wolfe, a visitor from the United States. rr WATER SAFETY Bill King and Wilma Vanden Boomen of London demonstrate whot canoe at the Exeter pool during o small craft water safety demonstration Friday afternoon. The two performed short skits with accident related themes. not to doing the win. allowing only five hits while striking out five batters. Ile also led the way offensively hitting a single. a double and a triple driving in two runs. Pete Tuckey had a single and dou- ble while Brian Horner singled. 13111 Hodgins took the loss for West Cor- ners, allowing six hits while striking out four halters. Thursday !royals went to Nairn and absorbed a 5-4 loss in 12 innings. They were leading 4-1 al one point but Nairn tied it 4.4 in the fourth. Wes Lockhart's lead off home run in the bottom of the 12th won it for Nairn. Dan Heywood started for Royals going seven -and -one -1 hird i nnings_and allowing seven hits and four run while striking out seven batters. Brian Hodgins took the loss going three -and -two-thirds and giving up one run on two hits. Jack Berg went three innings for Nairn with Erriie Schlegal pitching the final nine to pick up the win.
