The trip for the Pee wees was very
successful. In round-robin play, Ex-
eter started slowly with a 1-1 tie
against Owen Sound.
In the second game, Exeter found
their rhythm and managed to defeat
another Owen Sound team by a :3-0
score.
With three points in the round-
robin, Exeter ended up in the A final
against unbeaten Walkerton.
In the final, Exeter played extreme-
ly well. They used the wind to their
advantage and built a 3-0 lead in the
first half. They hung on in the second
half to preserve this 3-0 win and the
'A' championship. Peter McAllister
and Julia Merner had outstandings
tournaments. The team is coached by
All Beattie and Lorne Rideout..
run in the first inning when Listowel
took a 2-1 lead, but they quickly
countered and by the top of the third,
had tied the game at two.
The game became a stale -mate un-
til the final inning when Listowel
scored on an error. The final score
was 3-2.
Co-ops lost the first game of the
series by one run as well. Coach Ron
Anderson blamed the losses on a
weakened bench.
"We had good pitching as far as
that goes, but we just didn't have the
bench strength," be said, noting that
the team had only three pitchers to
work with; Scott Lovie, Doug Schade
and Terry Cox. The other members
of the pitching squad have been
unable to play in the playoff games
due to other sporting commitments.
Schade put Co-ops on the board
Monday night when he doubled to
bring in Darcy Martin in the first
inning.
Trailing 2-1 in the third, Martin
doubled and then came home on an
error to tie the game. Thatunfor-
tunately, was to be the last run of the
game for Exeter.
If there is a bright side to be found
in Co-ops early exit from the league
playoffs, it is that they now have all
the time they need to gear up for the
1987 Ontario Baseball Association
Junior 'D' elimination tournament.
Exeter Co-op Juniors will be
hosting the double -knockout tourney
on the Labour Day weekend,
September 5-7.
Teams from all over Ontario will be
taking part in the tourney. Some
regional winners have already been
decided. Lakeside, the St. Marys area
team will be among the competitors
that weekend as well as Kingsville
from Essex county and Glanbrook
from the Niagara region.
Playoff series in Belleville, Stouff-
ville; Brockville and Little Britain will
decide representatives for the tourna-
ment later this month. Orillia and
Shelburne are also battling it out to
decide who will take part in the 'D'
eliminations tourney.
Co-op Juniors won the OBA junior
'D' tournament in their first year of
existence (1982) and since then, have
won their WOBA league champion-
ship in 1983, 84, 85, and 86.
