Forty-six people from Ailsa Craig'
and district boarded a Langs bus last
Thursday for an enjoyable day in
Essex county. This -was arranged by
Evelyn McNaughton for the Activity
Centre Committee. and she was
assisted by Wilma McIntosh.
Going down Highway 3, the first
stop was at Swain's at Eagle for a cof-
fee break and a look at their
greenhouse, especially the room [ill -
ed with brightly -coloured crotons.
Following the "blue" waters of Lake
Erie, we drove through Blenheim,
Wheatley, and saw the tomato fields
around Leamington, with rows of till-
ed baskets, ready to be loaded on the
large trucks and taken to the Ifeinz
factory.
We reached our 'destination, the
' Lakeshore Terrace Restaurant, right
on schedule at 12:15 for a complete
buffet dinner. This building which will
accommodate 200 for a meal, was
built for a house in the late 1800's by
Hiram • Walker and his sons, and
overlooks the lake, with Pelee Island
some 16 miles away.
After a leisurely meal and a chance
to wander through the grounds or to
the beach, we drove to the harbour
and saw the fishing boats. Following
a drive hast Jack Miners, we stopped
at Colasanti's to tour their 15
greenhouses with the largest collec-
tion of cacti in southern Ontario,
tropical plants, exotic birds, and a
small animal zoo. Between this stop
for plants and the next, to get the
fresh fruit from this area, the hold of
the bus was becoming filled.
Before returning by No. 2 highway,
we took a further look at Leamington
with its Seacliffe park, the boats in the
harbour, the sea of greenhouses along
the lake, and the prestigious homes.
It was a very festive town with its
banners and red plastic bows along
the streets to mark the parade route
for the Tomato Festival the next day.
Of course. you can't escape seeing the
Huge Tomato marking the Chamber
of Commerce booth in the centre of
town.
It was 5::30 by the time we passed

Tilbury and arrived in Chatham
where a planned stop was made at the
Elias Big Boy across from Interna-
tional Harvester.
Even after our large buffet at noon,
few could resist the chocolate torte or
the strawberry waffles served in the
"green room” with its hanging plants.
Arriving home at 8 p.m., we
retrieved our produce from the bus
and inquired when the next Centre
event would be. Well, we were told
that a "Barbershop" night is being
planned for October. Watch for
details.
Everyone wasn't back off their
holidays when the Gala Day commit-
tee got together for a report on 1987
Gala Days and turtle races that are
held the third weekend in July every
year.
The bottom line "Red". We had a
lot of compliments on the weekend
and everyone enjoyed it even if it was
hot, but we've got to live with that,
every year it's always hot, we expect
that.
The committee worked hard and
will be meeting again later to form
next year's committee. We need
everyone's help so will be looking
towards you coming out.
The park -is changing by -degrees, to
make way for a new community cen-
tre. The play area has been the latest
change. With a three day midget tour-
nament this weekend August 21, 22.
23, precautions should be the order for
the play area as they are looking for
a large crowd since this is the only
t tamed this year and the only fast
b.,tt this Craig diamond had this year.
Come out and cheer your team on.

Dear Editor:
This past weekend, during the
Junior Miss Pageant al the Crediton
Summerfest there was a change in
practice. In past years the reigning
princess was allowed to keep her
crown and sash as a memento of the
event.
This year the reigning Junior Miss
was required 10 remove the crown
and give it to her successor. For
many of these girls this is a once in
a lifetime experience and means
more to them than many of us can
imagine.
I must ask "Why the Change in
policy?" It could not be the expense.
most of the gifts are donated by local
supporters. 11Qw do you leach your
children about fairness, kindness and
honesty when they are treated in this
manner''
