Celebrate anniversary at Centralia
By Mrs. TOM KOOY
An enjoyable time was had on Sun-
day evening when Ron, June and
Robin Harvey of Huron Park enter-
tained relatives and friends in honour
of Ron's parents Bill and Velma
Harvey of Exeter on the occasion of
their 40th wedding anniversary.

PLAYGROUND FINALE Susan Vanderspek (far right) co-ordinator of the 1987 Playground program,
leads the Bert and Ernie club and the Sports Club through a song during a show put on to mark the
end of the program.
Playground ends with gala

filled with crafts. games and trips.
But for Playground co-ordinator.
Susan Vanderspek it marked the end
of a difficult season. One that could be
her last.
Vanderspek. a student at
Redeemer College in Ancaster who
took time off from her studies to open
a day-care program at the school, will
be returning as a student in the fall. -
She will continue to work part time at
the college day-care centre.
Vanderspek hopes to eventually
become a teacher and in the process
of preparing herself for that role, has
acquired a tot of experience with
children. Now she,s looking for
something different.
"Fm not sure what my contract will
be at the da :scare centre but right
now I don't think 111 be coming back, •
as Playground co-ordinator." she
said. •
Those who attended Thursday's
production know that Vanderspek will
be missed.
Over-all attendance has been down
considerably over that of last year.
Though Vanderspek is at a loss to ex-
plain the drop in interest, she feels
that the program serves a purpose in
the community and should be
maintained,
"It's definitely a•worth-while thing
-- even if it's just to get the kids out
of their parents hair for half a day,"
Vanderspek said.
Offering children .activities and
various forms of entertainment that
range from magic shows to fossil
digs, the Bert and Ernie Club and the
Sports Club give kids a focus during

problem, the Playground staff has

Vanderspek has also recommended
that Playground registration prices.
which now stand at $12 per week. per
person. or $3.50 per day. be left as
they are. The prices are graduated so
that it cost $18 a week for two children
and $21 a week for three. Daily prices
are graduated at the same rate.
Those prices are up only slightly
over last year when the base price for
one child per week was $10.
Financially, the Playground didn't
do as well as it did the previous year.
Government .grants, which had
covered four staff members in
preceeding years, only covered three
this season, putting an extra strain on
the Playground budget.
• We didn't do badly, but mind you,
we really watched what we speirl this
year because we had to cover the cost
the summer- months.
Vanderspek notedthat the weather
might have contributed to low atten-
dance over the course of the summer.
"It may be that because the
It was a complete surprise to the
couple. They received many lovely
gifts. Don Webster of Exeter,
(Velma's brother) was observing a
birthday also. His 22nd'.' so he said. A
lovely lunch was served by the host
and hostess including a lovely an-
niversary cake.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Kooy and
Clyde have returned home following
a three week vacation at Ruston
village campground.
The ball park in the village was a
bee -hive of activity again during the
weekend. Results will be found on the
sports page of to -day's paper.

The.weather also .sent kids in

of the fourth playground staff
member." Vanderspek said. "They
knew they couldn't run a good pro-
gram with only three people."
Shelley Tomes, Dianne Dearing
and Paulette Rothbauer are the other
three staff leaders. Asked how she
found the 1987 staff to be, Vanderspek
went right to the point:. "Great," she
said, adding "I don't think I could
have asked for a better one."
. Together they developed the pro-
gram with Exeter youth in mind-
My.hope this year was to have a
program that the kids would feel
welcome to come to," she said.
"Something that they wouldn't have
to sign their life away for."
For Vanderspek personally, the
highlight of the season game Thurs-
day night when Playground put on its
final show of the year.
"That was probably the big thing
for me," she said. "I really enjoyed
that, and I think the parents did too.
Really. they don't see a lot of what we
do."
