Common Loon, to be precise,
"that true and lasting symbol of
the Canadian wilderness", as the
Mint tells us. This bird (Latin
name: Gavia immer) is - accor-
ding to Peterson's Guide - wide-
ly. distrbuted throughout the
United States and Canada and is
even found in Europe and Asia.
I have nothing against the loon,
common or otherwise. The design
is a good choice, and I con-
gratulate the Mint. Mr. Car-
michael, and the courier service
that had lost the original design
which we were supposed to get in-
stead of the loon.
In fact, I would go one step fur-
ther than the Mint. This is a
golden (well, bronze -plated) op-
portunity to change the name of
our currency once and for all.
Why should Canada - in its 121
year as a sovereign country - not
have a distinctive name for its
currency? Why should we share
the dollar not only with the USA
but also with Australia, the
Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda,
Brunei, Ethiopia, Fiji, Guyana,
Liberia, Malaysia, New Zealand,
Singapore, Taiwan, Trinidad and
Tobago?
Does the Soviet Union share its
ruble, Italy its lire, Japan its
yen? What this country needs -
now that it has its own flag and
constitution - is its own ITmnetary
unit. Inadvertently, the Royal
Canadian Mint has found it for us,
everybody is using it, but it takes
Peter's Point to point it out: the
loon (100 chicks equals 1 loon).
What do you think? Are you
ready for a write-in campaign to
- your M.P.? Wouldn't you rather
earn 40,000 loons per annum, pay
a thousand loons a month to your
mortgage company and put a
couple of loons away for a rainy
day?
think we need the loon NOW.
Will the Bank of Canada go for it?
That's the 64 -loon question.
