Exeter I played in the 'B' final
against Ilderton. Again, itwasa close
game with Chris McDonald scoring
the lone goal in regulation time for
hands in the penalty area, sending the
game into a shootout.
Goalie Matt Glavin, hero of the
shoot out in the semi-final, was again
the difference. He made several ex-
cellent saves and then on the fifth and
deciding shot he personally deposited
the ball behind the Ildertongoaliefor

Co-ops take Walkerton twice
Exeter Co-op juniors swept a two
game series against Walkerton this
week, downing them 10-7 in a come -
from -behind effort Thursday night
and then overpowering them 6-5
Sunday. ,
Doug Schade pitched a full nine in-
nings for the win Sunday when coach
'Ron Anderson was forced to play due
to a -lack of junior bodies. Schade was
also responsible for bringing in three
runs on two singles and a triple.
Darren Akey contributed to the ef-
fort, bringing in a run with a single
while Ray Anstett came in on a wild
pitch to score from third base.
Juniors made a dramatic com-
eback Thursday night in their first
game against Walkerton. Trailing 4-0
entering into the third inning, Exeter
came to life, scoring six runs in the
top of the third and jumping into a 6-4
lead.

favour and they won 10-7.
A double by Steve .Merner brought
in Darrel Little to put Exeter's first
mark on the board in the third.
Merner was followed at bat by Dave
Akey who knocked out a single, bring-
ing in Schade and making it 4-2. Then
Darcy Martin stepped up to the plate
and belted out a grand -slam home
run, bringing in Merner and the two
Akeys in the process and giving his
team a two run lead.
In the top of the fifth, a single by
Fred Gregus scored Martin and then
a series of errors and wild pitches
allowed Gregus. Denis Kints and
Terry Cox to score.
Walkerton managed one run in the
fifth and two in the sixth, but could not
rally for a win.
Royals lose heart•breaker to Lucan
as O.A.S.A. playdowns approach
Exeter Royals lost a 9-7 heart-
breaker Thursday to the league
leading L` scan Irish Nine.
The 12 inning game was considered
by many to be one of the more enter-
taining games to be played in Exeter
the last two or three years.
Royals opened the scoring in the se-
cond inning when Jim Lewis singled,
Steve Prout singled and Don Stroud
doubled to push across two runs.
The Irish, who had managed only
two hits off of Dan Heywood until the
fifth, brought in five runs in that.inn-
ing to take a 5-2.1ead.
Brad Taylor's hit turned out to be
the big blow.
The Irish went up 6-2 in the top of
the sixth as Jim Zimmer led off with
a home run.
Royals then rallied in the bottom of
the sixth as Tdm Tordoff tripled, and
Jeff Rowe and Pete Tuckey walked.
Don Stroud singled and Brian
Hodgins singled to tie the score at 6-6.
The Irish then scored s ingle run in
the top of the ninth as Kevin Lightfoot
reached on an error and scored on
Paul Wraiths single.
Royals came right back in their half
when Brian Hodgins doubled and
scored on Dan Heywoods single.
The Irish got the winning runs in the
top of ine twelfth as Jim Zimmer

scored as Dave Smith tripled. He then
scored on a sacrifice fly.
Dennis Carty picked up the win
coming on in the sixth inning in relief
of Fred Franks. They combined to
strike out 14'batters and allowed 11
hits.
Brian Hodgins took the loss for
Royals, pitching the final seven inn-
ings.

struck out three and gave up six runs
on eight hits. Hodgins allowed three
runs on five hits while striking out
four batters.
O.A.S.A. Playdown
Once again, Royals fell just short of
victory: opening their zone Ontario
playdowns in intermediate 'C'.
Royals opened the scoring in the se-
cond inning as Tom Tordoff singled
and scored on Jim Allison's single.
Teeswater knotted the score in their
half of the second.
Royals went up 2-1 in the top of the
fourth as Glen Thompson singled and
scored on an over -throw.
Teeswater then pushed across four
runs in the bottom of the fourth to take
a 5-2 lead. They added one in the fifth
to maintain what looked like a com-
fortable distance.
In the seventh Tom Tordoff reach-
ed on an error, Pete Tuckey singled.
Richard Schilbe tripled and Dan
Heywood reached on an error to bring
in three runs. That was all they would
get however Teeswater hung on for
the win.
The second -game in the playdowns
goes Thursday in Exeter at 9
p.m..Royals have won the flip and if
a third game is needed, it will be
played in Exeter.
Royals travel to Poplar Hill Tues-
day. resuming league play.
Royals tourney approaching
Exeter Royals tourney is being
finalized for the weekend of August
7,8,9. Sixteen of the best fastball
teams in Ontario willbe competing
for $1,800 in travel money plus Molson
prizes and trophies. •_
-T1 The tourney opens on Friday with
last years champions from Fullarton
meeting Teeswater at 8 p.m. on dia-
mond one.
Lucan White Sox. led by Paul
Horeburg, take on Ayr Vies who have
won several Ontario Rural Champion-
ships at 9:30 p.m.
Petrolia meets Stonetown Chargers
and on diamond two Verschoyle will'
meet Glencoe.. -
Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. In-
gersoll Macnabs will meet league
leading St. Pauls on diamond one
while on diamond two Nairn plays
McLeod .Roofing from Kitchener at
11 a.m.
Former tourney champs, Rich-
mond Hill will play Merlin from
Chatham and on diamond two.
Chepstow Aces will meet St. Marys
Baird Lumber Kings.
Games continue Saturday until 11
p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. with the
final around 5 p.m.
There is no admission and
refreshments and food will be
available.
' A draw fora bushel of hats will also
be held on Sunday.
Molsons will be sponsoring the
event.
'A' group on a 10-0 win over Goderich,
they defeated Petrolia 3-0 in the semi-
final and then beat a very strong
Lucan team in the 'A' final after a
very exciting and close game.

Beattie, VanEsbroeck stars
for Exeter. 1 against Nairn
In squirt action this week, Exeter
I continued its winning ways
defeating Nairn I by a 4-0 score. Ex-
eter carried the play throughout the
game with Ryan Beattie and Jeremy
VanEsbroeck playing their best game
of the season.
Scoring for Exeter 1 were David
Farquhar (2), Darryl Parsons t tl and
Danny Snell with his first goal.ever.
Exeter II played a strong game
against a tough Arva team but failed
to put the ball in the net. The final
score was 0-0.
Exeter III played a home game
against Ildertonli. The Exeter kids
dominated the play but could not put
the ball in the net on the many
chances and they had to settle for a
1-1 tie. Luke Sims scored the lone Ex-
eter III goal.

Exeter IV won by default over a
team from Lucan. Not enough players
showed up for Lucan to play the
game.
In Atom play. xeter 1 continued to
win. The Exeter -kids had no trouble
in defeating Elderton by a 5-1 score.
Scoring for Exeter I were Matt Glavin
(3), Chris McDonald 11 and Luke
Sims. Chris McDonald played an
outstanding game for Exeter I.
Exeter II did not fare too well in
their game against one of the top
teams in the Atom league, Nairn I1.
The Exeter kids gave it a good try but
Nairn was better. Exeter lost 6-0.
Both Mosquito teams were vic-
torious this week. Exeter I played an
excellent game controlling the play
throughout and defeated Nairn 15-1.
Scoring for Exeter 1 were Cheryl
Ballantyne. Dennis Welsh, Dan
Martens. Eugene Boersma and Jason-
Willert. Rob Wagner and Michael
Burton turned in good performances.
Exeter I1 did not start off too well
in their game• trailing 2-0 at half time
against llderton. In the second half.
however, they got their act together
and scored three unanswered goals
for a 3-2 final score.. •
Joel Campbell t 21 and Ryan Stuart
scored for Exeter 11. Trevor Taylor
and Mark Foster played well for
Exeter.•
In Pee Wee play. Exeter II travell-
ed to Lucan'and defeated their hosts
by a 8-3 score.
In Bantam play. the Exeter team
was a little over confident after three
easy wins in a row and were lucky to
get away with a 1-1 tie against
Strathroy. a team that only had lo
players.
Time and again the Strathroy
players beat the Exeter players to the
ball and at times dominated the play.
Exeter look a lead shortly after half-
time when Tim McAllister gent in
Sivilay Sengkhounmany all alone to
score.
Strathroy tied the -game up shortly
after that and that is the way it
stayed. •
Exeter is presently. in third place in
the standings. .
Special mention this week goes to
Theresa Wilhelm. who scored her
first goal ever last week in a squirt
game.
