PART OF THE ROUTINE -- Harness racehorse o r Jim Taylor ap-.
plies linament and bandages after exercising his horse R. Royce
Killean.
JOGGING ALONG - Part of Jim Taylor's daily routine is exercising and training his harness racehorses
on the half -mile track he built on his farm.
His hobby is horses
When Jim Taylor sold his trailer
factory in Hensall, he did not retire to
his rocking chair. He is now busier
than ever, with cattle on grass near
Clinton and a pork operation on. his
farm east of Hensall. But those are
just extras. Taylor now has the
freedom to concentrate his con-
siderable energy and enthusiasm on
a hobby that has become his major
occupation - raising and training
pacers for harness racing.
Taylor has always been fond of
horses. He still remembers the barn-
ful of beautiful animals he passed
each day while driving his own horse
to school in Ilderton. He bought his
first standardbred in 1969, and has
owned horses ever since.
While still in charge of the factory.
Taylor had to wait until evenings and
weekends to look after his horses.
Now he is in his horse barn on his
farm south of Hensall by 6:30 a.m.
each day. Early morning drivers
along Highway 4 can spot him on the
track he had built in the grain field
beside the house. If he's going around
clockwise he's racing his pacer
against a stopwatch.
Back in the barn there's feeding,
grooming, linament rubs and the
myriad other details required to keep
horse and equipment in good
condition.
At present Taylor, who has had a
trainer's licence for years, is training
four and racing three of these. He also
warms up his horses at the track, then
turns the reins over to pro driver
Ralph Bailin, Morikton, for the actual
racing.
"Driving is a young man's game".
Taylor remarked.
Harness racing is not cheap. A
prime investment is the cost of the
horse and "you have to train a horse

and the racing bike goes for around
$1,000. Add on incidentals like hob-
bles, shoeing and vet calls, and the
bills mount up.
-Getting to the winner's circle
makes it all worthwhile", affirms son
John, who shares his father's interest
in racing and has his own mare.
Taylor has high hopes for R. Royce
Killean, a three-year-old bought
recently from Bill Ellerington, Ex-
eter. In the month Taylor has owned
him. this horse has won in London,
and come second in Windsor.
Ray Rip, a four-year-old raised on
the Taylor farm, won his maiden race
in this spring's meet at the Western
Fair Raceway, then won again before
the meet was over. Ile also won
recently in Hamboro.
Taylor's most recent acquisition is
a lovely little filly from neighbour
Doreen Rowcliffe's Maid of the Mist,
who has not yet been registered or
natnedl.
Taylor had the claimer of the•year
at the Western Fair Raceway in 1986.
Miss Kelly Rose brought home $10,000
in winnings one year and $12,500 the
next, before he sold her for $20,000..
"She paid for her keep", he said
laconically.
The hope of winning big is always
at the back of one's mind, Taylor ad-
mits. Although he wouldn't admit it,
Taylor also keeps horses because h'
plain likes the animals
