HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1987-07-22, Page 17Squirts get 6-0 shut -out Exeter 1 continues to win in Ilderton In squirt action, Exeter I continued its winning ways with a_6-0 win over Ilderton. In a strong team effort, with four players sharing the scoring, Ex- eter totally dominated the game and went home with an easy win. Scoring for Exeter I were David Farquhar (2), Darryl Parsons (2), Sean Beattie (1) and Jason Bruxe with his first goal of the season on: penalty shot. Danny Snell and Angela Higgs also performed well. Exeter II kept pace with Exeter 1 as they defeated Nairn II by a 7-0 score. Exeter III travelled to Coldstream and played a very exciting game with play flowing from one side of the field to the other. The 1-1 tie was a well deserved result for both teams.. Luke Simms scored the lone Exeter goal. Exeter IV was the only squirt team to lose this week but they came up against league leading and unbeaten St. Columban. It looked as if an upset was in the making when Jeff McLean gave Ex- eter IV an early lead, but St. Colum - ban came back and then -took over in the second half when the Exeter kids ran out of steam. Jerry Geurts played exceptionally in goal for Exeter IV. to Atom play_ l te_t _l_came- up against a strong Lucan team. The Ex- eter kids could not capitalize on their chances and were beaten by a 3-0 score. The Exeter II atoms fared better as Marty DeBruyn scored a hat trick to lead his team to a 3-1 win over Grand Bend. It was a real team effort with the defence shutting down Grand Bend on most of their opportunities. Some •of the Exeter forwards however, played without lady luck in this game. Brian McAllister, Jeff Inch and Scott McDonald played well for Ex- eter II. - ' The Exeter under 11 girls continue to improve. After a 2-0 defeat earlier on in the season at the hands of Strathroy, the Exeter girls played an aggressive game and came away with -a scoreless -draw. Lynne Hern, Amy Walper and Daniel Lambert played well for Exeter. In Mosquito play, Exeter I con- tinued to lead the standings in that division after defeating highly plac- ed Lucan by a 4-0 score. Coach Mike Cregan was very pleased with the ef- fort put forth by the entire team in this win. Scoring for Exeter I were Sivichay Sengkhounmany .(2) Jamie Dougall (1) and atom Marty DeBruyn (1). Juniors bring home $150 Exeter 11 travelled to Coldstream and had no trouble in defeating the host team by a 12-0 score. It was a one sided affair with the Exeter kids con- centrating on their passing game.' Scoring for Exeter 11 were Craig Hern (3), Trevor Taylor (3), Mark Foster (1), Jamie Vandam (1), Jamie Rolph (2) and Joel Smith (2). In Pee Wee play, Exeter 11 put forth an excellent effort in the first half against a strong St. Columban team but in the second half the Exeter kids, hampered by injuries and Without spare players on the side line, ran out of steam and were defeated by a 4-1 score. Mark D'Anna scored the lone goal for Exeter II. Eugene Hartman and -Amanda Houston played 'well for Exeter. In Bantam play, Exeter made it three wins in a row as they defeated Lambeth by a 3-0 score. The Exeter kids dominated play but had trouble on the very small field to convert their chances into goals. Jeff Playfoot (2) and Jason McFalls (11 scored the Exeter goals. Mark ,VanBruane and Chris Chanyi played strong games for Exeter as did Jason McFalls. Next Saturday (JGiy 25) will be the day of our annual atom tournament. Coops are finalists in SI.elbourne tourney Exeter Co-op juniors went all the way to the 'A' final at a baseball tour- nament in Shelburne'on the weekend, winning their first two games by scores of 8-1 and 9-1, but losing 13-9 in a final shootout with Collingwood. Co-ops received $150 in prize money for finishing the tourney as finalists. Collingwood claimed a $200 first prize. Exeter started toward the final Saturday when they came up against Flesherton and beat them 8-1 in four innings. The games were all five inn- ing match -ups with a seven run, four inning mercy rule. Co-op pitcher Dave Akey went the 111111111111111/ 'distance for Exeter, allowing just one -run in four innings. • Fred Gregus scored in the bottom of the second to start things off for Ex- eter. In the third, Scott Lovie brought in Darcy Martin and then Gregus, who got on base with a single, scored as Steve Neil drew the attention try- ing to steal second. Doug Schade scored in the fourth on an error and Dave Akey brought in Martin and Darren Akey with a triple. Dave Akey later came- in on a sacrifice by Gregus and Lovie was scored by Ray Anstett's single, mak- ing the score 8-1 and ending the game with a mercy. Co-op mercied their next opponents as well. Lovie was on the mound for the se- cond game against orillia when he struck out four batters and allowed one unearned run over four innings of play to lead his team to a 9-1 victory. That win earned them a• berth in the final against Collingwood. Dave Akey brought in Schade with a single in the first inning and then followed him across the plate when Martin hit an RBI single, making the score 2-0. A single by Dennis Kints in the se- cond scored Gregus to increase the lead. YOU BE THE JUDGE Crediton Throw-Togethers Donna Overholt is apparently tagged out at third base by Doug Case, but the official call was safe at third. In the back, right, Dan Overholt takes the opportunity to advance to second base. Throw-togethers were the eventual winners of•the Centralia mixed slo-pitch tourney on the weekend. After Darren Akey hit a double in the top of the third, he was brought in on an RBI double by Dave Akey: Then Gregus tripled to bring in Steve Merner and Lovie. Schade and Dave Akey scored again in the fourth, sending the seven - run mercy rule into effect. In the final game of the tourna- ment. Collingwood took a strangle- hold on Exeter and was leading 7.3 in the third inning but Co-ops exploded for six runs in the fourth, changing the shape of the game. . Schade doubled, bringing in Merner and then scored himself when Martin knocked out a two RBI double. Neil later scored when Darren Crocker tripled and then Crocker was delivered home by a Darren Akey sacrifice. At that point, Co-op guns fell silent. Collingwood managed to score five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to win the game. The final was unfortunately marred in the second inning when a Coll- ingwood player broke his ankle while sliding into third base. Darren Akey went five for nine in the tourney, raising his team leading average to .412. Gregus was five for eight while Martin went five for seven with three walks. MOVING UP — These Karate students recently improvstd their status at the Exeter Karate Club. In the back row are Kathy Hodgins and Mork Mothers. They advanced from yellow to orange belts. In the front row ore Jessica Zawalsky and Daniel Zawolsky. They recently advanced from white belts .to yellow belts. - Neil strikes out 18 for Express Mike Neil, pitcher for Exeter Ex- press, turned in an incredible perfor- mance Thursday night against Thorn - dale when he struck out 18 batters and allowed just two hits in nine full inn- ings of play. Express won the game 7-4, largely on the strength of Neil's pitching. Allowing them one run in the first inning, Neil went on to down five of the next six•batters he faced, giving his team time to tie the game and eventually take the lead. Will Sentjens scored in the third after Brian Mercer singled to bring him in. Thorndale scored again in the fourth but Exeter stayed close when Sentjens hit a triple. bringing in Barry Baynham in the sixth. While Neil kept Thorndale at bay, Exeter pounded in five runs in the top of the eighth to secure the win. Baynham hit an RBI double, bring- ing in Brian Horner, then stole third and home. Sentjens then tripled to put himself in scoring position and Pete Heeney singled to bring him in. Heeney and Kevin Hern both scored on errors. Thorndale brought in unearned runs in the eighth and ninth but could not catch the Express. •r Win double-header Express played a double-header against Walkerton Sunday and came away with two wins, beating the visiting team 3-2 and 9.-3. In the first match -up. neither team was able to make a mark on the scoreboard until the fourth inning when Walkerton managed to bring in a run off the pitching of Jeff Fuller. Express tied the game right away when Dan Macdonald singled and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Greg Hern then singled to bring Macdonald in. Exeter increased their lead by two more runs in the sixth when Sentjens and Doug Fairbairn crossed home plate on singles by Kevin }fern and Mercer. Walkerton managed one more run in the bottom of the sixth with a home run but Express hung on for the win. There was considerably more scor- ing in the second game of the day. Ex- eter blasted Walkerton 9-3 after recovering from a three run deficit. Walkerton came out with their col- lective guns blazing, scoring three runs in the first inning. Exeter main- tained their composure and by the top of the third, they were beginning to gain some ground. Sentjens was able to score on a single by Mercer and then Mercer came in when Greg Hern grounded out to the first baseman. Those runs seemed to spark Ex- press. Kevin Hern knocked in Brian Parkinson with a double and Kevin Drager took advantage of two Walkerton errors to cross home plate. A sacrifice fly by Sentjens allowed Hern to score, giving Exeter a solid 5 -3 -lead. An R131 single by Greg Hern in the fifth brought in Macdonald and gave the home team some insurance. Kevin Hern started off the sixth in- ning with a home run and then Sent- jens and Steve Pearce both scored after hitting triples to seal the fate of Walkerton. Paul Gilmour went the distance on the mound for Exeter. striking out six batters, walking two and allowing just three hits, two of them in the first inning. Throw -together take Centralia Mixed SIo.pitch tournament Crediton Throw-togethers emerged - as champions on the weekend, winn- ing the 'A division championshipbf Itirleirrsi Centralia Mixed SIo-pitch tournament. • The tourney, organized by Stephen Township minor hockey to raise funds in hopes of keeping 1987-88 registra- tion fees low, drew 16 mixed teams from the surrounding area. Throw-togethers defeated Beauty ,and the Beasts by a score of 15-7 to claim Ihe A' title and take home 8250 in prize money. They picked up $175 for the championship and 825 per win over the course of the weekend. Throw-togethers got the show on the road Friday night when they beat Odd Couples, who would eventually go on to become the 'B' champions. - A 15-2 win against Shipka Saturday and a 7-3 victory over Tip Top Tailors Sunday morning put the Throw- togethers in the 'A' final Sunday afternoon. Beauty and the Beasts found themselves in the final after the dealt with the Honeymooners Saturday ' morning and then beat Sluggers 2-1 that night, advancing to the semi- final. There they met Roosters and Mens Sunday afternoon. pulling out a 8-7 win. •• A WINNING LINE UP Crediton Throw-Togethers captured the 'A' division titleot the Centralia mixed slo-pitch tourney on the weekend, From left to right are: Lind sey Muller with her father, Matt Muller, Donna Overholt, Sue Muller, Deanna Govers, Helen Thomson, Deb lord, Mary Ann Koricina, Joanne Hodge, Dick Lord with his son Brayden, Rick Govers,Bill Hodge, Ken Govers, Dan Overholt and Don Thomson. Pk Odd Couples •B' Champs After being knocked out of the 'A' division by Throw-togethers Friday night, Odd Couples went on a winning ramage which resulted in a 6-3 win over Odds -n -Ends and the 'B' cham- pionship honours. Odd Couples did away with Spur of the Moment Saturday afternoon and then blasted the Generals 20-7, advan- cing to the finals. Odds -n -Ends were almost as suc- cessful after their initial 4-1 Toss to Sluggers Friday night. They went on to defeat Honeymooners 7-5 Saturday and Double C 5-3 on Sunday, earning a place in the 'B' final. Odd Couples division win gave them $150 in prize money which built up a weekend total of 8200. Odds -n -Ends picked up 8100 for their appearance in the 'B' final. Mary Ann Lewis also carne up big at the tournament. She won $116 in the Stephen minor hockey 50/50 draw.
