Promises For You". Ladies served
refreshments after the service and
parents met the teachers and viewed
the crafts made by the children. Jill

On Tuesday at 10:01 a.m. I
stormed into my bank. My card
says that it will provide me with
"ready access" to my account,
and that I can do "Onestop,
Nonstop, Quickstop, Cashstop"
banking.
"Why did the computer refuse
to give me money after I
deposited my cheque?" I
demanded to know.
"The machine is programmed
to hold all deposits for ten days
before allowing withdrawals."
"Ten days? Why? This was a
Government of Canada cheque.
Don't you trust the
government?"
"I trust the government, I'm a
Conservative," the clerk said,
"but the computer doesn't. It
doesn't trust anybody. It's dumb.
It wouldn't know the difference
between the government and a
bad -cheque artist. You claimed
you put a cheque in your
envelope, but you might just as
well have put in a sheet of toilet
paper. How is the computer to
know the difference?"
So I'm back in the oid lineup
when I want some of my cheque
in cash. The money machines are
O.K. when they don't have to
trust anybody. Or when they're
not broken down.
I want to know what happened
to the good old banks. Stephen
Leacock once said: "When I go
into a bank I get rattled'. I think
I will heed his advice and from
now on keep my money in cash in
my trousers pocket and my sav-
inac in cilvpr rinllarc in a cork
