The convertible in the foreground driven by Kelly Mackewn, London, came onto Highway 4 from County Road 22 and collided with the dark car on the left driven by Wanda Myles of Lions Head, which had been proceeding south. The latter then collided with a northbound car driven by David Larder, London. Four people sustained minor injuries. About 20,000 farmers will get aid under plan A new $50 million provincial pro- gram will provide assistance to about 20,000 Ontario farmers, Ontario Agriculture and Food Minister Jack Riddell announced recently. In announcing details of the Ontario Farm Management, Safety and Repairs Program, Riddell said it will stimulate the rural economy and help farmers make improvements to their operations that may have been postponed due to the tough financial times. The program will pay individual farmers up to $2,500 for im- provements in safety, farm machinery, on-farm storage and farm management analysis. Retroactive to June 1, 1987, the new program will apply to producers in Ontario with annual value of produc- tin of $12,000 and to producers with less than that production under special circumstances. "This program has many attractive features for farmers," said Riddell. "It will allow preventive maintenance to be carried out, the quality of grain and feed to be enhanced, farm opera- tions to be made safer and more farmers to participate in farm business and management planning." The program consists of four parts: - A $300 grant for participation in the ministry's Farm Management Analysis Project. - A grant of 80 percent of specific on- farm safety projects such as roll bars and safety cabs for tractors, personal protective equipment, child -resistant fencing of farm ponds and manure forage areas. = A grant of 50 percent of the cost of replacement parts for field machinery parts and for farm shop equipment - A grant of 40 percent of the cost of on-farm feed and storage facilities. "Farmers will be able to get their $2,500 on any combination of projects that suit their farm operation," Rid- dell said. "They may also apply on as many occasions as it takes to reach the $2,500 maximum." To be eligible, items must be pur- chased between June 1, 1987 and May 31, 1988. Applications for the program will be accepted no later than July 15, 1988. • Applications will be mailed to many Ontario farmers during the first week of August. Extra copies may be ob- tained from any ministry county or regional office beginning August 10, 1987. The Ontario Farnt Management, Safety and Repairs Program was one of five major agricultural initiatives announced by Treasurer Robert Nix- on in his May budget, which increas- ed spending on agriculture to a record $563 million. This represents a 72 per- cent increase .in spending since 1984-85. VOLUNTEERS - Above is the volunteer staff for the Exeter pool.
