Targetting
on manure
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority will be targetting its
Manure Management Awareness
Program in the lower Ausable River
watershed this year to control pollu-
tion and keep the Lake Huron beaches
open for swimming.
Two area to receive intensive work
are those of the Pstebe and Adelaide
Creeks. These streams have been
identified as ones having poor water
quality conditions.
Dave Balint, Water Quality Techni-
cian of the Conservation Authority
says, "These watersheds have also
been selected because of severe ero-
sion problems associated with last
fall's intensive rainfall event and
because of the high livestock density.
These two factors may have con-
tributed to high bacterial counts in
stream waters."
Conservation authorities in Ontario
with co-operation from the Ministry
of the Environment are increasing ef-
forts to limit the effects of
agricultural impacts on water
qualtiy. During 1987, Dave Balint of
the Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority will be contacting farmers
to promote cost-effective solutions.
The goals of the program are to
gather and provide information about
the sources and solutions to pollution
problems. Site visits will be arrang-
ed to provide technical assistance.
Conservation staff also help to
make farmers aware of the various
grant programs to fund im-
provements to their waste manage-
ment systems. The Ontario Soil Con-
servation and Environmental Protec-
tion Assistance Program 11
(OSCEPAP 11), for example, is a
newly improved program whereby
grants are provided for 40 percent of
the eligible costs of projects to control
seepage and runoff.
The OSCEPAP 11 program also
provide substantial funding for pro-
jects to control soil erosion. For more
information about the management of
farmwasteor erosion control and the
newly enhanced OSCEPAP 11 pro-
gram, contact the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority at 235-2610.
