Exeter Co-op juniors added a win
and a loss to their record this week'
when they lost 11-10 to Lakeside Sun-
day and then pulled out a 6-5 win over
Walkerton Monday night.
Co-ops now stand in second place in
the Great Lakes Senior Baseball
league with a record of seven wins
and seven losses.
Juniors -pulled out a come -from -
behind win Monday night with the
help of mother nature. Tied 3-3 in the
fourth, Walkerton brought in two runs
to take the lead but Exeter rebound-
ed in the fifth when Denis Kints and
Doug Schade scored on errors and
then Fred Gregus singled to bring in
Darcy Martin. That gave Exeter a 6-5
lead. •
In the sixth inning, the game was
called due to darkness and Co-ops
went home with the win.
Schade pitched the final two innings
for the victory while Gregus led the
team in hitting with four RBI to his
credit.
Co-op juniors stalled out in the
seventh inning Sunday when they
came up against Lakeside.
Leading 84 after the top of the sixth
inning, Exeter fell apart, allowing
five runs in the 'bottom of the sixth.
They went on to give up five more
runs in the next two innings, losing the
game 11-10.
Dave Akey was four for five at bat
with three RBI to his credit. he earn-
ed those on the strength of a single
and a triple.
Darren Akey went three for five
and was responsible for three RBI
which he brought in with a double.
Express win grudge -math
Members of the kxeter Express
were smiling after a trip to Wals-
ington Sunday. The team came away
with $200 and a good deal of satisfac-
tion after battling Walsington Seniors
6-2 in what has become an annual
grudge -match for the two teams.
Because the Walsingham, team
could not make a commitment for the
second of the two game event, Ex-
press's single win stands as the series
winner. It also entitled them to the
prize money.
Coach Joe Fulop said that the high
calibre Walsingham.teampresents a
challenge to Express and that two
teams have developed a rivalry over
the years.
"They've been pretty high up in the
OBA, 'D' league. That's why we like
to play them," Fulop said.
"We've played games against them
for about ten years. I used to coach
in Dashwood. We played them then
and just kept on doing it (in Exeter)."
• Express took the lead in the top of
the first inning Sunday when a com-
bination of errors and singles allow-
ed them to score four runs.
A single by Kevin Hern brought in
Dan Macdonald and Dave Shaw when
Walsingham's.short stop mishandled
the ball.
A single by Walt Parkinson and the
combination of three more errors
allowed both Kevin and Greg Hern to
score, making it 4-0 for Express.
Walsingham made it 4-1 in the bot-
tom of the third but Exeter regained
a four run lead when Dave Hayter
doubled to bring in Shaw.
Hayter brought in Shaw again in
the seventh with an HBI single to
make the score 6-1.
Walsingham threatened in the bot-
tom of the ninth when they scored
• their second run of the game and then
loaded the bases with two out. But pit-
cher Jeff Fuller came through at the
last minute and Walsingham left all
three men stranded on -base.
Fuller went the distance for Ex-
press, allowing 11 hits while striking
out five batters and walking three.
League action
Express split a pair of games in
regular season play this week, losing
a tough 9-8 decision to Strathroy in ex-
tra innings Tuesday and then picking
up an 9-8 win against Seaforth
Thursday.
Strathroy took a 2-0 lead after the
second inning but a single by Dave
Bogart in the top of the third brought
in Macdonald to keep the game close.
Hayter tied the gaine 2-2 in the
fourth inning when he managed to
score after both the third baseman
and the catcher mishandled the ball.
Exeter then took the lead in the fifth
when Shaw singled to bring in
Macdonald.
Strathroy battled back with two
runs in the bottom of the fifth to re-
take the lead, but that was short-
lived.
In the sixth inning,. Exeter bats
came to life.
Bogart drove in both Pete Heeney
and Macdonald with a single and then
was brought in by Shaw who singled
for his second RBI of the night.
The score continued to see -saw

two more runs in the seventh to tie the
game 6-6.
It looked as if Exeter would go
home with a win when Paul Gilinour
hit a home run in the top of the ninth,
bringing in Kevin Hern and giving his
team an 8-6 lead, but Strathroy main-
tainedtheir composure. They scored
two more runs to tie the game yet
again and send it into extra innings.
It was at that point that Express's
luck ran dry. Dave Shaw came in to
relieve pitcher Barry Baynham. He
struck out his first opponent but then
run into trouble. Allowing a single and
then walking the next three batters,
Shaw walked in the winning run.
Express 9 - Seaforth 8
It looked as though Exeter was
done for the night by the sixth inning
Thursday w1:an they allowed Seaforth
to get a stranglehold on the lead.
Trailing 7-1, Express suddenly
came into some luck in the top of the
sixth when Seaforth walked four con-
secutive batters.
Shaw and Will Sentjens were able
to score on wild pitches while Heeney
was brought home by Greg Hern's
single.
The show continued as Doug Fair-
bairn hit a two RBI single, bringing
in Drager and Parkinson. Fairbairn
was followed at bat by Baynham who
brought in Hern with another single.
Shaw and Drager then hit singles to
score Fairbairn and Baynham
respectively, making the score 9-7.
Seaforth managed one more run in
the seventh, but Exeter hung onto the
lead and won the game.

Pete's win Blue Crew tourney
There were a lot of 'hot' ball teams
at the Huron County Rec Centre on
the weekend, but Pete's Tavern, a
fastball team from Toronto proved to
he the hottest, winning the 'A' divi-
sion title of the sixth annual Blue
Crew men's rec league fastball
tournament.
After losing to Springfield in the 'A'
division semi-final last year, Pete's
Tavern returned to go all the way in
Blue Crew competition this season.
They went undefeated in the two
day event, downing French Cleaners
of Goderich 8-1 in the final and claim-
ing $250 in prize money.
Gary Latchford, starting pitcher for
Pete's, was selected most valuable
player for the 'A' division and was
presented with a trophy mug.
In the 'B' division, it was Zurich
Geherals who took top honours. They
downed Hensall 7-3 in the' B' final to
win $175 in prize money..along with
various brewery prizes from OV.

day under blistering conditions Hen-
sall was understandably worn out.
Generals. who received a bye into the
'B' final. took advantage of Hensali's
• condition to win the game.
Hensall finished the tourney'with a
record of three wins and two losses
while Generals had only one win and
one loss.
Generals received the bye because
only 11 teams r . rtici r ted in the com-
petition. The schedule had to be ad-
justed -accordingly.
Zurich's Jeff O'Brien was selected
as the • V divisions' most valuable
player.
Despite the reduced number of par-
ticipating teams in this year's event.
organizer hike Soldan said that he
was pleased with the outcome.
"The calibre of ball was quite good
and we had four teams from Toron-
to. which was good." Soldan said.
He noted that the number of people
who turned out to watrch the rec
league action was good considering
the reduced number of teams involv-
ed in the competition.
Soldan also praised the tourney
officiating.
