Help to hold your soil
Farmers, are you having trouble
with blowing soil? Do you see dust
storms in your area on windy days''
Are rills, washouts, and gullies form-
ing in your fields after rainstorms or
robbing you of potential yields?
If your farmland is affected then
you are losing topsoil and dollars -- in
Targe amounts.
An erosion control program for
your farm will solve the problem.
However, what you need to start is
some technical and financial
assistance. The Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority is your local
source of help.
Robert Traut works out of the
A.B.C.A.'s office in Exeter. As Con-
servation Agronomist, Traut offers
advice and assistance on erosion con-
trol to farmers from Clinton to
Adelaide.
-We provide services to meet every
farmer's erosion control needs," says
Traut. "Firstly, there's farm plann-

tions as crop rotations, strip cropping,

low cost options which the landowner
may want to pursue. Or he may

choose higher investment options
such as grassed waterways, berms,
terraces, or diversions. Regardless of
the method, the farmer ultimately
decides which option or combination
of options best suit his operation and
farming system while keeping his soil
loss at tolarable levels."
"If a farmer chooses the conserva-
tion tillage or planting option, equip-
ment is available for trials. Finally,
we can give assistance and advice
about government grants for struc-
tural works and tree planting."
Traut feels that the equipment
trials are a key part of the program.
"The equipment trials should be very
attractive to farmers. Landowners
are allowed to use the equipment free
of charge on a 10 acre trial." If you need assistance with erosion

"This equipment allows the
farmers to use and evaluate the
systems on their own farms", says
Traut. "I know that these farmers
will see the advantages of the system
because our existing test results are
so good," he says. Traut's hope is that
farmers will follow through and in-
vest in equipment modifications or
new equipment and use them for ero-
sion control.
"With services likethis, and finan-
cial assistance available in many
cases, every farmer with soil erosion
problems should be lining up for
help," concludes Traut.
Central Huron Secondary School in

no -smoking policy to apply to all
areas in and around the school, effec-
live September 1, the day the 1987-88
term begins. '
Notices were included in the year-
end report cards which were mailed
to secondary school students and
were addressed to both students and
parents.
"Il is.the considered opinion of the
staff that the overwhelming condem-

Shipka
Congratulations to Terry Pickering
who last weekend won 557,568.00 in the
Lotto 649. Terry purchased his ticket
at the Barefoot Pedlar store in Grand
Bend.

The Schilbe family reunion was

Centre, with about 60 in attendance.

nie Sitter.
Prize to youngest attending was
Jeffery Baker, Shipka; oldest atten-
ding, Mrs. Irene McLinchey, Zurich;
one of the special older guests atten-
ding was Mrs. Gertrude Sitter, of
Thedford. All enjoyed a smorgasbord

The readers write
Dear Sir,
('anadians have been held hostage
for too long by the effective monopo-
ly which the post office has on the
delivery of letters in Canada.
Believe it or not, the law says that
you must charge more than three
times as much as the post office to
deliver letters. If you charge less than
that you commit a crime which could
result in imprisonment for five years'
In addition, through assault, van-
dalism, threats and harassment by
picketers, unions have an effective
monopoly on the supply of labour to
the post office.
The result of this "double monopo-
ly" is that the country" is being held
to ransom by the postal unions and
there is no alternative to which Cana-
dians can turn. Instead. we're forced
to put up with strikes, disruptions.
high prices and inefficiency in our
postal service. Many small and new
businessess have been push. (1 to the
brink of bankruptcy. Billions of
dollars have been lost to the economy.
That's why we're urging Canadians
to ask Prime Minister Mulronev to
end the post office monopoly. If
Canada Post were exposed to the
discipline of free enterprise competi-
tion, the change -would be
revolutionary.
The time for tinkering with the post
office mess has passed. .Papering
over the cracks in the system will only
invite further trouble.
We say, "Stamp out the post office
monopoly and allow _ free
competition."
The time has come for fundamen
tal change -. and political courage.
Yours sincerely
David Somerville.
