Exeter Express split a pair of
games this week, dropping a 5-4
heart -breaker to Walkerton June 30
and then trouncing Thorndale 12-2
Sunday (July 5).
In the match -up against Thorndale,
Brian Horner came through for Ex-
eter, pitching the duration of the
game. He allowed only six hits;, walk-
ing four batters and striking out four.
Walt Parkinson got the ball rolling
in the second inning when he scored
on a single by Kevin Hern, but it was
Dave Hayter who stole the show,
knocking out a two RBI single, and
bringing in Hern and Pete Heeney,
Hayter later scored himself when
Brian Mercer singled.
Express held'ontothe 4-0 lead until
the top of the fifth when Thorndale
scored on the combination of'a walk
and a sacrifice fly.
Exeter got right back to work, scor-
ing three runs in the bottom of the
ftfth and five more in the sixth.
Parkinson and Paul Gilmour
started off the filth with doubles.
Hayter then singled to bring in
Parkinson and Gilmour followed later
when Mike Neil was walked.
A single by Dave Atthill brought in
Hayter to end the inning. With the
score standing at 7-1 in favour of Ex-
eter, Thorndale managed one more
run in the sixth.
Exeter's Steve Pearce took advan-
tage of a wild pitch to score in the bot-
tom of the sixth, setting the pace for
the remainder of the game. Heeney
.and'Gilmour were both walked. They
scored later when Neil doubled and
Atthill hit a single.
The final score was 12-2 for
Express.
Walkerton 5 - Express 4
On June 30, it was Kevin Drager
who went the distance for Express.
He pitched nine innings of ball, allow-
ing seven hits while striking out four
and walking three.
Drager's performance wasn't
enough to put the team over the top
though. With Walkerton leading 5-4 in
the bottom of the ninth, Express were
unable to bring in the tying run. They
left three men stranded on base.
Walkerton jumped out to a 2-0 lead
in the top of the first but Exeter
countered when Atthill got on -base
after being hit by a wild pitch. He was
able to score on a single by Brian
Horner.
That made it 2-1 for Walkerton.
A single by Barry Baynham allow-
ed Greg Hern to cross home plate in
the bottomof the third to tie the game
at two.
Walkerton snatched the lead back
with a run in the fifth and then added
some insurance -with another in the
sixth. That stood until the bottom of
the seventh when Exeter was able to
capitalize on three consecutive
Walkerton errors to score two runs.
Bogart advanced to first when his
hit was mis-handled by Walkerton's
third baseman. Fuller then managed
to get on base when Walkerton's se-
cond baseman fumbled the play. That
set the stage for Shaw to bring in
Bogart, again with the help of Walker -
ton's third baseman.
A single by Baynham allowed
Fuller to score the tying run.
With the score tjed 4-4 in the eighth,
Walkerton brought in the winning run
on the strength of a "triple and a
sacrifice fly.
Express, unable to capitalize on
three hits in the bottom of the ninth,
lost the game by a score of 5-4.
