Bridal Shower at Varna
By Joan Beierling
A bridal shower in honour of Becky
Collins was held at the Stanley Com-
plex on Tuesday June 30. Julie
Webster played the piano as everyone
arrived. Bernice Reid was chairper-
son and welcomed everyone. She then
called on Fay -Ann Love to play the
piano. Jo Anne Hayter entertained
everyone with her stepdancing.
Sandra Turner and Julie Constitt
organized some contests. One was a
stelegram; some had to send a
telegram to Becky on her honeymoon.
and some were of Becky sending
them back, all using letters of Becky's
name. The results were hilarious and
quite interesting. A lot of fast think-
ing was done.
MaryEllen Webster played a few
numbers of the piano. Sandra Turner
read the address and Becky was
presented with many lovely gifts.
Becky thanked everyone and lunch
was served. -

Hay accepts lower quote_
to clean municipal drains
Two quotes for cleanout of the East
Branch of, the Black Creek and the
Jacobs drain were opened at the first
regular July meeting of Hay council.
C. Reid will be asked to excavate and
level 24,500 feet of the Black Creek
branch at a cost of $9,375, and clean
out 4,100 feet of the Jacobs drain for
$1,575. Reid's quote was lower by a
total of $500.
Township drainage inspector
Gerald Thiel stated in his report on
the drainage job on the property of
Lorne Miller that at least 300 feet of
perforated tile had been installed in-
stead of the nonperforated that had
been specified. He also noted that the
outlet was'not doing an adequate job
when inspected on May 18.
Although the provincial drainage
inspectorhad been on the site and-ap-.
proved what was done, Reeve Lionel
Wilder supported Thiel. He said "no
one at this table would have reported •
differently".
Thiel's report will be included in the
documents sent to OMAF for ap-
proval of
p-provalof the debenture.
Water line project officer Barb Rau
and Dick Rau attended the meeting.
Barb said she had received a cheque
for $1,163,0001rom the province for
the line, and had nervously rushed to
the bank to deposit it. She had never
held a million dollars in her hand
before.
Omega Construction will be given
a progess payment of $700,000 subject
to approval of the project engineer.
The long-awaited fittings shipped
from Surrey, B.C. cleared customs on
Monday.
Wilder said he had met with
representatives of the Norman
Heights, Vista BeachandBayview
subdivisions on Sunday to answer
•
some questions on the water system.
The Bayview representatives were
given two options. They can hook in
the existing system if they receive ap-
proval from the engineer, but the
Bayview homeowners association
would be responsible for its operation
and maintenance, and would be the
ones to collect the water bills. The
township's policy prohibits the take-
over of existing distribution systems.
The other alternative would be to
circulate a petition and obtain
signatures from at least 51 percent of
property owners to have the township
build and operate a new distribution
system.- Dick Rau figured the coat to
install the service would be less than
$2,000 per lot.
Ernst Ihrig, proprietor of the
- Hessenlapd Restaurant and Hotel- -
had spoken to Wilder about having
another T -connection installed to pro-
vide water when his plan to build a
number of chalets becomes reality:
Councillor Don Weigand brought up
a subject concerning him. He said a
familyhad set up a teepee and mov-
ed an oldbus onto a site in his area
of -the township, and planned to live
there this winter with their two
- children. Weigand wanted to know
-- what township regulations were
applicable.
Wilder said -his concern wouTd be
for the health and welfare of the
children. He was not averse to adults
living outdoors, but stated his opinion
that children are entitled to a decent
standard of living. -
Township bylaws stipulate that a
building permit and health certificate
must be obtained by those wishing to
set a mobile home on a property. in
the case of a bus. the running gear
would have to be removed, and the
bus placed on a permanent
foundation.
• Clerk .loan Ducharme was, in-
structed to ask the huilding inspector
to find out what is going on. and notify
the people involved of township
regulations.
Approval was given to a request by _ -
Bernie Denomme to hold a hall tour-
nament from August 28 to 30. with the
proceeds to be used to finance the con-
struction and upkeep of the flay
• township ball diamond and building.
Wilder instructed the clerk to draft a
letter to Denomme and the other men
on thecommitteewho organizedthe
construction and financing of the
facility, commending them for the ex-
cellent way they have honoured their
commitment. ( The township had
