as Perth PC hopeful
Ron Christie, a 39 -year-old Staffa
area farmer and a former president
of the Perth County Federation of
Agriculture, was unopposed in Strat-
ford as the new provincial Pro-
gressive Conservative candidate for
Perth.
In his acceptance speech before an
enthusiastic group of about 50 people,
Christie said "conservation and sus-
tainability" within the farming com-
munity are of great concern to him.
And he noted that although Strat-
ford and its auto -related industry is
booming at present, overcapcity in
the industry and "a lean competitive
market" being predicted for the
future makes now a good time for
people to think about investing wisely.
Christie suggested that what's
needed to sustain farming is applica-
tion of the concept of land being set
aside for conservation.
He said that the present system 01
government support for farmers,
while very badly needed, includes "a
counterproductive element" in that it
is geared to the producton of crops.
The support system encourages
farmers to produce as much as possi-
ble, with the result that overproduc-
tion becomes a problem.
He suggested that farmers might
instead be given incentives to set
aside 10 or 15 percent of their
marginal lands for seeding with con-
servation crops such as clover and
legumes.
This would minimize soil erosion
and improve the quality of the soil

block from home.
lad T ftn-,n
while combating the overproduction
problem.
It has been part of U.S. [arm policy
for years, he said, and a similar pro-
gram in Canada would harmonize On-
tario's farm policy with its southern
neighbour.
Christie said the concept is being
considered by the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture and the the"Canadian
Federation bf Agriculture is studying
it as well.
"It is basic common sense," he
said.
The new PC candidate said he is
committed to community good and
public service and is looking forward
to the challenge of representing Perth
riding, "with enthusiasts and
excitement". '
Dave Brock of RR 2 Staffa, a
longtime friend who seconded Mr.
('hristie's nomination, described the
candidate as a proven successful
farmer who shows compassion for
other people and who has "an en-
vironmental concern for the future."
Christie was nominated by Strat-
ford alderman Cheryl Ruby. She
described him • as "easy going and
down to earth but also as "hard-
working. confident and sensible."
And, she added, "he doesn't pull
any punches..` you know where you
stand with Ron Christie."
Christie has served on the Mitchell
distriatapitttlning board, was a Hibbert
Township councillor for two years.
served for two years on the Upper
Thames River Conservation Authori-
ty and for seven years as a member
of the Perth County Federation of
Agriculture.
He is currently a family farm ad-
visor with the Ontario Farmers in
Transistion program.

5S board closing Stratford school
To get a grant to enlarge one
Roman Catholic elementary school in
Stratford led to the closing of another.
The Huron -Perth County Roman
Catholic Separate School Board voted
unanimously Monday night to close
Immaculate Conception School, its
smallest elementary school in the ci-
ty in June 1988.
In order to get a grant from the
Ministry of Education to expand and
,provide better facilities for St. Am-
brose Separate School approval was
conditional in Immaculate Concep-
tion closing. Its (Immaculate Concep-
tion) attendance has been declining in
the last three years from 150 down to
92 students now and signs point to the
decline continuing.
Following notification on June 9 by
the Ministry it had approved a $1.2
million addition to St. Ambrose
School, the board chairman, Dave
Durand of Zurich said trustees had to
act quickly.
"There was no easy way to do it,"
said Education Director William
Eckert.
The parents of the students were
warned the next day by a letter sent
home with students of the intent to
close the school.
Pupils who would have attended
Immaculate Conception will be taken
by bus to St. Ambrose beginning in
September 1988, when the addition is
to be completed.
The addition to St. Ambrose will
make it a full facility school with a
new administrative area, six addi-
tional classrooms including a
kindergarten, two of the new
classrooms will be large enough to
house a music room and a science lab,
a special education class and a
special Guidance room, a gym-
natorium with stage and change
rooms and new washrooms.
Six Stratford parents attended the
board meeting but had no voice at the
meeting as they were not on the agen-
da to speak. During the recess period
in the lunch room they expressed
their opposition to the closure of the
only school in the east end of the ci-
ty. One parent raged he may send his
children to a near -by public school
rather than having them bused to St.
Ambrose which is about a mile and a
half away in the south end of
Stratford.
Trustee Ernest Vanderschot of St.
Marys, chairman of the board's ac-
commodation review committee, told
the press he is not worried about
parents reacting to the closing by sen-
ding their children to a public school.
He spoke of the obvious advantages
of a Catholic school.
Trustee Louis Maloney of Dublin
said he would have liked to have
heard the concerns of the parents
before he voted on closing Im-
maculate Conception. They were not
invited to speak during the meeting.
Dave Durand, board chairman,
spoke of the recent closure of Ecole
Ste. Marie at RR -2 Zurich, in his area.
Ile said the parents no longer oppose
the closure as they realize that the
larger school with all the facilities of-
fers more to the students.
The board plans to keep the Im-
maculate Conception building but
hasn't any immediate plans for it.
Trustee Ron . Marcy of Stratford
wondered if when the board gets the
money for St. Ambrose it could re-
open Immaculate Conception if need-
ed and not mothball it. He said the
board should not dispose of it until the
Money is received from the ministry
for the new secondary school the
board hopes to build in Stratford by
1990 to house 'all its secondary
students.
