The Grand Bend Public School
graduation dinner and awards night
was held at the -Oakwood Inn:
Fourteen students with only two
girls, made up the grade eight
graduating class this year. Principal
Norm MacPherson brought greetings
from the board representative George
Harris and Lambton superintendent
Doug Barber who is retiring after 36
years.
Carole Armbruster, teacher, and
Sharon Soldan secretary presented
the graduates with school pins and
certificates, as the former roasted
each student in turn. Jody Becker was
valedictorian, 'reflecting special
moments at the GB school.
Subject awards were presented as
follows: English, French. and Fami-
ly Studies to Mike Clay, Math to Bob
Mollard, Science to Jody Becker,
History and Geography award to
Jason Desjardine, Industrial Arts to
Fred Smith, and Physical Education
to Christina Shepherd.
Bill Jennison was presented the
Jean Sharen Memorial award; and
Dain Zubyk won the W.F.B. (Mac)
MacLaren Scholarship, both
presented by Brian Morrice, teacher.
All -Round Student Citizenship award
was won by Cullen Kobe, and Mike
Clay received the Over -All Academic.
The evening concluded with
speaker Doris Elliott and pictures.
Before the GBPS students finished
school at noon on June 23 for summer
holidays, a number of special awards
were presented. GB Chamber of Com-
merce members Bob Sharen, Judd
Bumstead and Darryl Farquhar
presented six students with $10.00
bank accounts CID). These students
participated in a Canada Day contest.
Winning entries are on display at the
GB PostOffice. Poster winners were
overall Eric Clay, grade three; Nicki
VandeVen, grade four; Lisa Turnbull,
grade five; Melissa DeBrum, grade
six; essay winners. Jeff Bumstead,
grade seven; and Jason Desjardine,
grade eight.
Trent Stellingwerff, grade five, won
the GB Lioness Citizenship award
presented by Sharon Soldan; and
Michael Stanlake received the Doris
Elliott Effort Award.
Brian Morrice presented a number
of children with fitness crests and an-
nounced that Grand Bend Public
School is above average on the
Canada fitness scale. Bronze, silver,
gold, and excellence awards were
presented. GBPS also won the trophy
for overall champs at the NLES
Track 'n Field. meet in Watford this
past June. -

This Sunday marked the last for
Father Robert Morrissey as pastor of
Immaculate Heart of Mary .parish.
Father Paul Beck, the new pastor.
was co -celebrant at all the weekend
masses, and was introduced to the
parishioners.
Members of the CWL had coffee.
pop and doughnuts available after
each mass to enable each parishioner
to say goodbye to Father Morrissey
and tree( Father Beck.
In Father Morrissey's sermon, he
disc:issed the Christ -like spirit which
we must all emulate in our lives. The
disciples left all (hey had and
everyone they loved to follow Christ.
Christ never intended us to do that.
but how can we imitate therrl?
First, Christ had a complete
dependence upon God as a living
presence, constant companion and
comforting counsellor. We must try to
become more aware of God's
presence, to talk with God and listen
to His word. Second, Christ had a love
for all people which leaped over alt
barriers to embrace the entire human
race. Ile saw the possibilities of
goodness and greatness in each per- ,
son. We should see people for their
potential and encourage their growth
in Christ.
Christ was willing to suffer and to
sacrifice for things that were impor-
tant to Him. Ile responded to the il-

people of His day. We too must
become involved with helping to
alleviate the burdens of poverty, in-
justice and disease in mankind today.
We must take up our cross and follow
Christ.
After the 11 a.m. mass, Jim Dalton.
president of the Parish Council gave
a thank you address to Father Mor-
rissey, recounting his ac-
complishments as the first pastor of
the Grand Bend parish, then Father
was presented with an engraved pla-
que. a poem written by Marg Baxter,
and a check for $6,500.00 from the
parish. The money will be used to set
up a fund for the needs of the poor in
Father Morrissey's new mission
parishes, six of them, north of Ed-
monton. Parish council members
John Peters, Mary Fran Gaiser and
Marge Baxter made •the
presentations. •
The new pastor, Father Paul Beck.
from St. Clare, Windsor, was given a
warm welcome.
The members of the CWL are
preparing for their bazaar in August.
A truck will be left in the church park-
ing lot for three Sundays in July 5, Ju-
ly 19 and July 26, for anyone to donate
items to the garage sale. The Catholic
Women's League Convention will be
held in London. August 17-21. If you
would like to attend, phone Rose Van-
bruaene at 238-8396 for tickets.
Father Morrissey's new address

Bend budget set

a 4.84 percent increase this year
following the 1987 budget by council.
Total mill rate for residential: pro-
perties -is .26 mitts, compared to
283.53 in 1986. The new commercial
rate is 349.71 mills.
The 1987 budget for municipal pur- .
poses was set at $590,911, compared
to last year's actual expenditure of
'566,276. The budget last year was
$558,608.
This year's total is made up of ( with

The total property taxes to be rais-

At the Grand Bend Legion. winners
. of the Friday meat raffle were:

son. Winners of the mystery prizes -
were Jack Lake, Betty Phelps. and
Bonnie.Barttam. There was a really
good turnout for the raffle this time.

The big event of the summer. for
July 4 is coming - a steak barbecue
with all the trimmings. served from

ed by a 14 -piece big band presenting
"The Music of Your. Life" from the
40s to the Gus. Tickets for the dance
are $7.00 per person. All tickets may
be picked up -from the Legion begin-
ning at 12 noon each day, and are also
