Express squeak out two wins
Exeter Express got back on the
winning side of things in the Great
Lakes Senior Men's Baseball League
last week after squeaking out wins
against Seaforth and Thorndale in the
final innings Tuesday and Thursday
night.
The victories increase their regular
season record to eight wh(s and six
losses, putting them in second place
behind Strathroy.
Express's roster, depleted last
week because of injuries, has been -
replenished to some extent by the
return otpitchers Kevin Drager and
Dave Shaw. Drager was out for two -
weeks with tendonitis while Shaw was
vacationing.
New coaching staff
for Co-op juniors
A brand new coaching staff is
leading the Exeter Co-op Juniors in-
to the 1987 season and that staff is
bent on results.
Anchored by manager Brad
Gregus, in his sixth year with the club
which he had a hand in founding, the
staff is made up of coach Don Currell
and assistant coach Ron Anderson.
Currell has a long baseball and
fastball history to draw on. He played
hardball as a youngster in Goderich
and then went on to play senior ball
with Oakville Oaks. After that he
spent some years playing fastball in
Leamington.
Currell said.Thursday night prior to
a game against Tavistock (which Ex-
eter won by forfeit) that he and
Anderson needed to get a good look at
the team in actionso that they could
use the players on hand in their most
effective positions. Because the 20
game regular season is still relative-
ly young, the team is more or less an

unknown quantity.
"Because Ron and I are both new,
we knew we had to get to know the
kids," Currell said.
"We've got a lot of young players
on the team right now. A lot of them
are Midget -aged. They walk up here
now and all of a sudden they've got a
20 -year-old throwing at them instead
of a 15 -year-old."
Currell maintained that once the
younger players get a few more
games under their belts, they will be
more confident and consequently,
more effective. To date, Coop Juniors
have played seven exhibition and
regular season games. The team cur-
rently holds a win -loss record of 4-3.
"We've got a good nucleus here."
Currell said. "It's just a matter of fin-
ding out where the young guys are go-,
ing to fit in."
Anderson, assistant to Currell,
agrees with that outlook. Like his
counter -part. Anderson comes from a
baseball background in Northern On-
tario. A first time coach. he said
Thursday that it was good to be in,
volved in baseball again.
Both coaches noted the strength Co-
ops have in the bull pen.
Anderson said that the team had six
strong throwers and two or three
others capable of pitching one or two
innings at a time. Two left-handed

"1 intnk they've got a good chance
of them (Co-ops) being in there right
to the end." Anderson said. "I don't
think we've met a team yet that we
can't beat."
If nothing else, the new staff's
coaching philosophy should steer the
team toward another successful
season. At the beginning of the year.
Currell layed down the corner -stones
for the team: play as a team and don't
get down on each other. -
"And all through it all," Currell
added, "They've got to remember
that it's just a game."
Jeff Fuller is still missing from the
line-up with a number of injuries. It
is not known whether Steve Pierce
will return to the mound next week.

Thorndale.
