Vilia attacks Alzheimer
with several activities
In support of fellow senior citizens,
the residents of Exeter Villa are pool-
ing their efforts during Nursing Hoine
Week, June 21-28, to raise funds for
research into Alzheimer Disease.
Alzheimer's is a debilitating disease
that affects some 300,000 middle-aged
and elderly Canadians.
' "This is a major annual fund rais-
ing event, coordinated each year
throughout the province by the On-
tario Nursing Home Association,"
said Kathy O'Reilly, DOC/Ad-
minstrator. 'It's a wonderful way to
rally the energy and resources of nur-
ing home residents and staff across
Ontario in support of (his worthy
cause."
Exeter Villa is conducting a varie-
ty of activities including open house,
family picnic, bake sale, draw for an
afghan and a barbecue, during Nurs-
ing Home Week. The first event, an
open house will be held on Sunday
June 21 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
All funds raised throughout Ontario
during Nursing Home- Week will be
donated to the Alzheimer Association
of Ontario, Kathy O'Reilly said. "Our
target at Exeter Villa 'is $50).00 this
year, for our first endeavour at fun-
draising for the Alzheimer
Association.
Since 1984 the Ontario Nursing
Home Association has raised over
$167,000 for medical research into
Alzheimer Disease. Alzheimer
Disease is a brain disorder causing
memory loss and serious mental
deterioration. There is no known
prevention or cure for the disease
that is the fourth most common cause
of death among Canadians.
Mgn and women from age 40 on-
wards can be affected by Alzheimer
Disease, with people over 65 being the
most vulnerable. The ailment may
last from two to fourteen years after
its onset. Significant memory loss is
the first symptom, and as the person
grows more forgetful, other mental
capacities deteriorate until routine
daily tasks become impassible to per-
form. Eventually the person requires
constant care and attention.
Alzheimer Disease was once
thought to be the result of senility or
of simply growing old. It is now
recognized as a specitic disease for
which, in time, medical science will
discover the cause, treatment and
prevention.
Extensive research is presently be-
ing carried out in Ontario and
elsewhere including investigation in-
to the possibility that chromosome 21
contains the gene for familial
Alzheimer Disease.
Come and join us at the Villa dur-
ing the week of June 21, as we work
towards our target.

of George and Lois Godbolt: Jeremy
Brock, son of Bill and Janice Brock,
and Gavin S• 11, son it Robert and
Brenda Anne Snell were part of a
select group of 10 singers chosen to
provide background music for the
play "Not About ileroes", written by
Stephen MacDonald.
The play, which will open at the
Avon Theatre Stratford, on June 25
deals with war, and all the
senselessness which goes with it.
Two outstanding poets of World
War 1, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred
Owen, meet in 1917 at a convalescent
hospital for victims of shell shock.
•The play develops around the friend-
ship between them.
The words are a fusion of Latin and
English texts drawn from the tradi-
tional Roman Catholic burial service,
while the music is a free arrangement
of several popular war -time songs.
After only three rehearsals the boys
mel at the Avon Theatre to record the
music under the direction of Allan Za-
ing and Brian Emeryl conductor of
the Boychoir.
Exeter can be proud of these young
singers, and also of Jeremy ,Straw,
Simon Dinney and Fred Godbolt who
are all current Boychoir members.
Audtions for the 1987-88 season will
be held at Exeter United Church on
Wednesday June 24, beginning at 7
p.m.
