For some years now, I have envied

To avoid the possibility of any

Society?"
The money is used as .follows:

even recall them washing the

Now if you've never had a shot
of cod liver oil you've missed a
real treat. That stuff, on a scale
of 1 to 10, would be somewhere
around minus 100. Just writing
about it can bring back that fine
flavour. It seemed to stick to your
teeth all day no matter how often
you got to the water fountain.
But the worst was always yet to
follow.
I'm not quite sure now why my
parents sent the dime for milk for
us to school. We always had plen-
ty of milk at home but anyway it
must have been considered the
right thing to do.
That milk must have been
specially warmed by the milk
truck driver because by the time
we got itthe white stuff Was about
room temperature. Of course in
those days it wasn't homogeniz-
ed so the cream would rise to the
top' of the bottle in little yellow
blobs.
The routine was cod liver oil
first, then the pint of milk and
dismissal, all under the eagle eye
of the teacher who considered it
her duty to make su't-e that all of
us poor urchins received our pro-
per dosage of vitamins and
calcium.
Amazingly enough I survived
but till this day whenever I taste
milk which is not ice-cold 1
remember that doggone cod liver
oil.
Thethree things most difficult are: to
keep a secret, to forget an injury and
to make good use of leisure.
