T -A photo Will investigate more solar possibilities Having already approved solar heating for the I al swimming pool. the South Hu n rec centre board agreed this % • k to hear details about the possibil ty of having the sun heat portions o , the rec centre. ExeJ r representative Dorothy Chapman, who has been spearheading the drive to reduce energy costs and take advantage of grants for conservation implemen- tatin, sparked discussion on more solar heating by reporting that the board could be eligible for a 75 per- • cent grant on a feasibility study. - The grant would come from AMO, the municipal organization interested in knowing if solar energy 'could be us- ed in parts of some recreational facilities. Cost to the board would be $500 for the study. Acknowledging that the board doesn't have current funds to under- take a solar system, she quickly add- ed that they probably can't afford not to look at the feasibility. Pat Down said solar systems ap- pear better suited to milder climates than that of this area, but Mrs. Chap- man persisted that the baord should at least have an expert explain solar sytems to them. , •'Good idea`', responded Stephen Reeve Tom Tomes, who said he didn't know much about solar heating but would like to find out more details. An expert will be invited to speak to the board on the subject and Mrs. Down requested that weather statistics be obtained to aid in the deliberations. Mrs. Chapman also urged the board to go back over the past five years and submit bills for energy conserva- tion work that has been undertaken and could be eligible for 50 percent government grants. Members agreed and the ensuing discussion indicated some of the work could include the new plastic strip barriers in the hallway at the dress- ing rooms, new thermostats in the hall and the new glassed entrance that was erected inside the foyer to cut down on heat loss.
