Mary Harvey and Lorna McCarney organized the show to raise funds for the Southcott Pines clubhouse. Annexation seen as answer for sewers in new subdivision At a recent meeting of Grand Bend council a request was made for use of the village sewage system. Alan Guest, London. approached council for the commitment with respect to supplying sewers to Green Forest Estates subdivision which is located in Stephen Township. Council told Guest that there was much more involved that just their approval for the sewers. He was told that Gill Road is going to be paved in the near future under Grand Bend's budget. The best solu- tion for this subdivison is annexation council stated. These people will have the same water and sewer rates as the people in Grand Bend; and peo- ple in the subdivision will be looking to the village for recreation and all other services. Guest was told that if annexation is turned down. the Township of Stephen would have to send in snow plows. garbage•contractors, etc. Clerk Dianne Mollard was authoriz- ed -to send letters -regarding the an- nexation bid to all those concerned. Guest told council that his main concern was to get on with the development, and he could see their view on amalgamation as the only way into the estates is by Gill Road. No word has yet been received from the ministry or the township. . Set Beach Patrol Hours Councillor Bruce Woodley presented a resolution for hiring the beach patrol staff at last Monday's. regular council meeting. In a record- ed vote the staff were granted in- creases from 5 to 10 percent for the '87 season. It was passed by a 3-2 vote. Head lifeguard Bruce helm will be paid $8.80 an hour, up 80 cents from last year. Reeve Harold Green and Councillor Marsha Lemon opposed the 10 per- cent pay hike, but praised the patrol for their good service. "I'll hate to see the day when we have to hire all new staff," said Green, "hut I still think five percent would have been suffi- cient this year." Council set the hours of operation and fees for their two beach parking "lots. The lots will be open 9-5 on weekdays and 9-9 Friday and Satur- day and 9-6 on Sunday. It was felt that the minimum wage would be paid with an older student in charge, to be paid $5.50 an hour. The rates for ad- mission to the parking lots are the same as last year. Legion officers picked There was a general meeting.and elections at the Grand Bend Legion on Monday, May 4. The new slate of of- ficers: president Jim Price, vice- presdient Wally Turple, 2nd vice- president Glen Bryson. secretary Lou Hamilton, treasurer Judy Roane, and Sgt. at Arms Joe McNeil. The new ex= ecutive is:- Dee Rath, Jane Chambers, Frank Allen, Larry La Boeuf and George Gallant. The winners of the Friday meat raf- fle were: Celia Hughes, Jerry O'Brien, Jack Lake, Jane Carlson and Les Desjardine. There were also four mystery draws: Les Desjardine, Ina Russell, Fred Engels and Jean Chambers. There were 60 people out for the first steak barbecue of the year, with good food and good friends. The next steak barbecue on May 23 includes a dance, with 'the dinner starting at 5 p.m. - Seniors choose slate The Grand Bend Golden Agers held their May meeting Wednesday after- noon at St. John's parish hall. with 26 in attendance. A new couple. Len and Enid Warren, were welcomed to the group. During the program, the seniors were taken on a trip to Cuba via a slide show shown by Mrs. Catherine Junker, where -she and Mary Coxan holidayed last winter. Many of the buildings in Cuba are made of stone. with the labor provided by prisoners. They saw many cactus and flower gardens; a visit to the Stone Zoo (Where all animals are carved from stone); street scenes in Santiago. buildings and mountains. They also saw sugar cane fields where the sugar cane is cut by hand. hauled in wooden carts to the factory and boiled down over hot furnaces. plus views of the lovely blue Caribbean sea. . Alec Hamilton presided over the business meeting. A sing -along of old favourites was enjoyed with Nola Love at the piano. A report of the Zone 8 Spring Rally hosted by the Grand, Bend Golden Agers,. was given by Aileen Ravelle. They received an in- vitation to Huronview, Clinton for a noon meal and program on several dates in June. - Catherine Junker read the results of the nominating committees' report, with the new slate of officers: past president Alec Hamilton, vice- president Loreen Gill, second vice- president. Clara Hamilton read "My Mother" and "Somebody's Mother" from an old Second Reader, printed in the 1890s. Beulah Holt read "I'm 'Fine; Thank You". Mary Coxan held a con- test to find words contained in "Remember Grandmother" won by Beulah Holt and Margery Mason. The group in charge served a delicious . lunch, on tables decorated with beautiful hougets of tulips and -, daffodils. They explained various viewpoints on how this problem affects Christians and how to deal constructively with homosexuality in today's society. Rev, Peebles's son and daughter-in- law Dawn and Paul Peebles were their guests. This year is the both anniversary of the Grand Bend United Church, so members of the Couples Club are sell: ing commemorative pins. The church is presently assembling a special edi- tion of a directory of all members who were photographed for the occasion. The Couples Club discussed the suc- cess of their annual Easter Sunrise Service, with about 70 being served breakfast this year. after the church service. There will be a yard sale and bake sale table put on by the Couples Club on the front lawn of the United Church.
