Put pride back in junior hockey
Hawks president predicts strong contender next year
Scott Lovie and Derek Switzer
shared this year's rookie award and
the most gentlemanly player honor
went to another former Thedford
player, Jeff Ansems. ,
Captain Dave Cassone was given
the best defensive forward trophy and
If the Exeter Hawks continue to
show the improvement they did this
season, they'll be strong contenders
for an OHA championship.
That was the prediction made on
Friday by team president Ron
Bogart, who chaired the annual
awards' night banquet at the South
Huron rec centre.
"If the improvement over last year
is continued, it can be accomplished,"
he went on after noting that this
year's team put some pride back in
junior hockey in Exeter after a dismal
showing in the 1985-86 season.,
He suggested the Hawks should be
honored for their effort and said it
was also a credit to the coaches and
manager.
"The fear we once put in other
teams will be back," he said in
cone sion. -
Coach Dave Bogor said-he_was
looking forward to coming back next
season and while the three over -age
players will be sorely missed, he
challenged others to move in and do
their part in taking over the
leadership.
Graduating from this year's team
through age are captain DaVe
Cassone, Dale Timmermans and
Steve Batten. Comments made by the
coach as he introduced all members
individually indicated there will also
be some other holes to fill.
In reference to two midget -aged
players, Jon O'Connor and Jeff
Dalrymple, he said he didn't expect
either of them back. He wished
O'Connor well in- his future
endeavours after noting the ctiapces-
of one of the teams top scorers com-
ing back was slim to nil. •
Dalrymple, who was selected as
this year's best defenceman on the
team, has been rated in this year's
draft by the OHA central scouting for
midgets eligible for junior "A" play.
"If he comes back he'll deserve a kick
in the pants," the coach suggested,
adding that he hoped the local product
would be playing elsewhere in higher
classification.
Dean Schram and Sean Whiteford
are also doubtful for next year's
squad as the former is planning to
head for Toronto to further his educa-
tion and Whiteford is off to a com-
munity college in Lindsay. Scott
Lovie is also heading away for educa-
tion although Bogart said he hoped
the latter would not be too far away
and would at least be available for
weekend games. . •
Timmermans and George Pratt
were the only double award winners
at this year's banquet. The latter won
the team's scoring leadership trophy
and was also named most valuable
during the season.
"You really don't know wha
George does until you look at the
scoresheet," the coach commented,
explaining that the forward hadn't
looked too impressive in a 7-6 playoff
win over Seaforth, but he had actual-
ly scored two goals and added five
assists.
Timmermans, who was lured back
to Exeter after playing for Thedford,

won the Hawk award and the Pfaff
Electric Trophy. They are given for
team leadership, perseverance,
dedication and other attributes.
"I never saw anyone- play with so
many injuries," Bogart commented
in handing out the two honors.
DOUBLE WINNERS — Exeter Hawks coach Dave Bogart, centre,
presents awards to two double winners at Friday's banquet at the
rec centre. Dale Timmermans, left, won the Hawk trophy and the
Pfaff -Electric award. Both are for team leadership, dependability,
perseverance and other attributes.George Pratt, right,_was-the-top- -
scorer with 74 points and was also named -the mos valuable during
the regular season.
Dalrymple took home the best
'defenceman title after improving
throughout the season to become the.
most consistent of the blueline
brigade.
Mark Morrisey, who was shifted
from defence to forward during the
season; copped the most improved
player designation, while Dave Rook,
who didn't join the team until near
playoff time, was selected as the most
valuable during the playoffs for his
superb netminding skills. He's ex-
pected back to complete his junior
hockey career in Exeter next season.
Cassone and alternate captains
Steve Gould and Jeff Pfaff lauded the
efforts of the coaches, trainers,
manager and executive.
Trainer George Pratt Sr. termed
this past season one of the finest years,
of his life and called the players " a
great bunch of guys who are a credit
to young people".
Manager. Dan Brintnell, who
assisted coaches Bogart and Steve
Prout in handing out awards, also
paid tribute to the executive for allow-
ing the three to run the team without
any interference.
