Weather conditions. shelve Pinery burn
The proposed controlled burning in
a section of the. Pinery Provincial
Park has been cancelled for the rest
of thi$year by the ministry of natural
resources. -
The burn, which had been schedul-
ed for late April or early May was
called off because of unsettled
weather conditions and the rapid ap-
pearance of new vegetation at there
6,000acre park south of Grand Bend.
The plan involved the burning of 39
hectares +80 acres) of the park con-
taining. white pines as an inexpensive
means of weeding the original oak
to look ouWor the welfare and care of
the public area."
Bonenberg said that everything is
greening/up rapidly now, so they'll do
the burn next year. He was personal-
ly disappointed that they couldn't
fulfill the objective of the manage-
ment side at this time. "It's put off for
a year," he said, "it's not an end to
the program."
Park naturalist Terry Crabe said
the thousands of pine trees now grow-
ing in the north end of the park have
taken over the original oak savannah
character of the forest and the burn
as e most efficient
and inexpensive way of removing
them.
Crabe said ministry officials decid-
ed on a controlled burn as the best
way of removing the pines because
fires. historically a natural occur-
rence every 20 years or so. have been
an integral part of maintaining and
were planned by the ministry .bet-
ween 1957 and 1971.
Park superintendent Ray
Bonenberg said that the prescribed
burn had to be done under certain
conditions. It had to be dry. proper
wind velocity, and before the recrea-
tion facility becomes busy. "We have
perpetuating the oak savannah cycle.
The burn also has been supported
by the Ontario Federation of
Naturalists as a "reasonable manage-
ment step."

Charter .tours will
be offered at resort
At the last harbour committee
meeting in April the committee ac-
cepted a proposal to provide charter
tours in the resort.
Kon Krauter, .Marine Charters
Tours..assured the Grand Bend com-
mittee that he had three million
- dollars of liability insurance for the
endeavour. He operates a 27 -foot
magnum boat and proposes to take
people out on rides. The cost will be
approximately $100.00 for half an
hour. Krauter plans td be with the
boat at all times. He was advised of
the necessary sign permit. launch
ramp fee. business taxes and various
dockage slips available on the north
docks.
It was moved by Dennis Snider and
seconded by Terry Crabe that the.
committee accept Krauter's proposal
.in principle, providing that he has
proof of the liability insurance -and
pays the fees imposed.
Correspondence was received from
previous harbour employee, John
Harris. He wished to withdraw his of-
fer to return to work this year. as he
has accepted other employment.
Previously. all six employees were
returning for the 1987 season. Staff
will be harbourmaster, David Gill,
employees Starr Jesney, Patti Love.
Lee O'Rourke, Scott Hayter, plus a
new student to replace Harris.
Grand Bend council set the rate for
the staff at the same amounts as in
1986. at $6.00 and 5.00 per hour.
Employees will start work this
weekend May 8 and 9. It was also
decided that the harbour staff will be
responsible for a portion of their
uniform cost. Council felt that fifty
percent. would be considered
reasonable.
Harbour committee also approved
an increase of $300.00 to the GB Cruis-
ing Club. for the use of the dockage
space across from their building. The
club had previously paid a mere
$100.00 a season for this 100 -feet ad-
jacent to the clubhouse.
The harbour meeting adjourned at
9:40 p.m. with the next meeting
scheduled for Thursday, May 21.
