The Ontario Hockey Association
Junior 'D' championship series has
boiled down to one game as the Lucan
Irish and Tavistock Braves are tied
at three games apiece.
The seventh and deciding game
was played last night, Tuesday in
Lucan. The Irish.last won a provincial.
' title in the 1981-82 season and the
Braves were champions the following
year.
Neither team has been able to win
more than one game consecutively in
the series. With Lucan leading two
games to one, the Braves tied things
up with an exciting 8-7 overtime win
Tuesday night. Back in Lucan Thurs-
day, the home team prevailed by a 4-3
score and in Tavistock Saturday the
Braves again bounced back to win 4-3
in another unbelievable finish.
After Saturday's game in which
Tavistock overcame a :3-0 second
period Lucan lead. Irish coach Ed
Parkinson said. --'They are a tough
team physically and never say die.
They took the bull by the horns tonight
and we had a lack of discipline in the
final 20 minutes."
Parkinson continued. "They came
up with a triple A effort when it real-
ly counted. We won't go out very easi-
ly and neither will they in the final
game. It's about as close as a flip of
a coin."
In Tavistock Saturday night, the
close to 400 Lucan fans were literally
shocked as their favourites blew a
three goal lead in the third period.
The fourth and winning score for the
Braves came with only 40 seconds left
in regulation time.
The only goal of the first period was
credited to Ron Goodhand of Lucan as
his shot bounced off a Tavistock
defender's skate and into the net.
Paul DePlancke drew an assist.
A pair of power plays late in the se-
cond period put the Irish into a 3-0
lead. Captain Bob Thirlwall counted
on a three-way passing combination
with Grant Larsen and Ron Goodhand
at 14.42 and with only 47 seconds to go
in the period, Brad Muir converted a
pass from Thirlwall.
In the first two frames. both goalies
Doug Basket' of Lucan and Scott
McCann for the Braves came up with
excellent stops time and lime again
to keep the score down. The Irish led

the first two period shots on goal
totals by 28 to 19.
At 1.14 of the final period, Tavistock
took advantage of a Lucan penalty as
Garth Winterton registered on passes
from Brian Eaton and Bill Matetich.
The real problems for the Irish.
started at 4.19 when Hon Goodhand
was assessed a five minute penalty.
This was followed four minutes and
11 seconds tater by a two minute call
to Bob Thirlwall.
The Irish captain was only in the
box for 33 seconds when Brian Eaton
scored for the Braves. Due to the ma-
jor penalty Thirlwall was not allow-
ed to return to the ice until his full two
minutes was served. In this time
Tavistock did not score. .
At 16.22. a clearing pass by Dean
Doerr of the Irish in his own end was
picked off by Jim Matetich of the
Braves and he quickly put the puck
behind a startled Doug Haskell.
A penalty call against the Irish with
little over two minutes to go proved
to be their downfall. With only 40
seconds to go the puck dune back to
Andy Gibb of the Braves about 30 feet
in front of the Irish net and he just lel
go a shot which hit a goal. post and
bounced in.
The crucial penalty was the only
one called by referee Brad Horton
that Irish coach Ed Parkinson ques-
tioned saying "A marginal call like
that should not be made late in a
game with the score tied.
Penalties again affect outcome
As in most of the games in the
series. penalties nlayedan important
part of Tuesday's game won by the
Irish by a score of 4-3.
The • first period belonged to the
Irish as they scored a pair of goals
and kept the Braves off the
scoreboard. The game was less than
five minutes old when Grant Larsen
notched the first of two scores on a
three-way passing combination with
Brad Muir and Ron Goodhand.
Shortly before this Lucan goalie
Doug Haskell stopped Andy Gibb
from point blank range and then did
the same to Bill Matetich.
The only Lucan goal that came
when the teams were playing even
strength was notched by Bob
-Thirlwall at 9:35 as he banked a shot
off the inside of the Tavistock goalie's
pad. Grant Larsen assisted.
The' Braves cut the Lucan lead to
2-1 at 8:07 of the middle frame as
Dave Witten registered on passes •
from Mark Albrecht and Kevin Yant-
zi only lour seconds after Terry
Knowles of the Irish was penalized.
Late in the second Period. the Irish
were able to cash in on a pair 01
penalties to [1111 Matetich. The Brave
received Iwo minutes for slashing and
another two as -the aggressor in a
fight.
While he !vas off Grant Larsen
scored his second of the night at 19:11
and Brad Muir hit only 28 seconds
tater. Getting assists on the two goals

were Muir. Paul Barnes. Mark Ban•
non and Joe Febrey.
In the third period. Dave Wiffen
notthed the second Tavistock goal at
5:14 while his team was playing shor-
thanded and he made the game close
with another successful shot at 15:58.
.1 wild scoring affair
Tuesday's game in Tavistock was
a wild. high scoring game with first
one team and then the other taking
the lead.
The first period was all even with
Joe Febrey counting for the Irish and
Dave Witten replying for the Braves.
'Lucan jumped in front 4-2 after 40
minutes of play as Eton Goodhand
fired.a pair of successful shots and
Grant- Larsen -counted in single
fashion The . lone Tavistock
marksman was again Dave Witten.
Garth 11'interton and. Jeff Smith
scored power play goals .for the
Braves in the first half of .the final
period to even the score. At 13:57 Bob
Thirwall put the Irish ahead again on
Ames -
Serving South Huron, North Middlesex
an unassisted effort. Less than three
minutes later Smith scored again and
the score was even at 5-5.
Then came Lucan's turn to score
again and Mark Bannon did the trick
with two minutes and seven seconds
to go.
That's the way the score remained
until only 20 seconds were left and
Mark Albrecht tallied for the Braves
to sent the game into overtime.
In the to minute extra session:John
Noble put Tavistock ahead at 6:33 on-
ly to have Mark Bannon tie the score
again only seven seconds later.
It took the Braves another :33
seconds to go ahead again. This time
captain Kevin Yantzi scored. With 51
seconds to go and 'on a power play
Ron Goodhand tied the score for the
• Irish.
The sudden -death overtime only
went to the 28 second mark as Yantzi
scored again to sent the Tavistock
fans home happy.

Deny Protest
Following Saturday's 4-3 loss in
Tavistock the Lucan Irish filed a pro-
test with the OHA. It was based on the
fact captain Bob Thirlwall who was
serving a minor penalty was not
. allowed to return _ when Tavistock
scored.
Referee Brad Horton ruled
Thirlwall had to stay in the box
because the major penalty was still
in effect.
The OHA board meeting in Kit-
chener Monday night agreed with the
Lucan submission that the referee
had Inade a Mistake but added, the in-
cident did not give Tavistock a
distinct advantage which the rule
book calls for and rejected the
protest.
Irish manager Jim Hearn argued
that the ,call put his team into a
distinct disadvantage, but that ter-
minology is not in the rule book.
In talking about the protest Hearn
added, "f want to make it clear that
we were not protesting against .
Tavistock, but against the referee's
decision. We were only being fair to
our players in lodging the protest."
At Monday's meeting the Irish were
represented by Manager Hearn,
president Clare Stanley and executive
member Bob Taylor. Sitting in from
Tavistock were George Regier,
Dwayne Roy and Wilfred "Pop"
Rosenburg.
