The seventh and deciding game was played last night, Tuesday in Lucan. The Irish.last won a provincial. ' title in the 1981-82 season and the Braves were champions the following year. Neither team has been able to win more than one game consecutively in the series. With Lucan leading two games to one, the Braves tied things up with an exciting 8-7 overtime win Tuesday night. Back in Lucan Thurs- day, the home team prevailed by a 4-3 score and in Tavistock Saturday the Braves again bounced back to win 4-3 in another unbelievable finish. After Saturday's game in which Tavistock overcame a :3-0 second period Lucan lead. Irish coach Ed Parkinson said. --'They are a tough team physically and never say die. They took the bull by the horns tonight and we had a lack of discipline in the final 20 minutes." Parkinson continued. "They came up with a triple A effort when it real- ly counted. We won't go out very easi- ly and neither will they in the final game. It's about as close as a flip of a coin." In Tavistock Saturday night, the close to 400 Lucan fans were literally shocked as their favourites blew a three goal lead in the third period. The fourth and winning score for the Braves came with only 40 seconds left in regulation time. The only goal of the first period was credited to Ron Goodhand of Lucan as his shot bounced off a Tavistock defender's skate and into the net. Paul DePlancke drew an assist. A pair of power plays late in the se- cond period put the Irish into a 3-0 lead. Captain Bob Thirlwall counted on a three-way passing combination with Grant Larsen and Ron Goodhand at 14.42 and with only 47 seconds to go in the period, Brad Muir converted a pass from Thirlwall. In the first two frames. both goalies Doug Basket' of Lucan and Scott McCann for the Braves came up with excellent stops time and lime again to keep the score down. The Irish captain was only in the box for 33 seconds when Brian Eaton scored for the Braves. At 16.22. a clearing pass by Dean Doerr of the Irish in his own end was picked off by Jim Matetich of the Braves and he quickly put the puck behind a startled Doug Haskell. A penalty call against the Irish with little over two minutes to go proved to be their downfall. With only 40 seconds to go the puck dune back to Andy Gibb of the Braves about 30 feet in front of the Irish net and he just lel go a shot which hit a goal. post and bounced in. The crucial penalty was the only one called by referee Brad Horton that Irish coach Ed Parkinson ques- tioned saying "A marginal call like that should not be made late in a game with the score tied. Penalties again affect outcome As in most of the games in the series. penalties nlayedan important part of Tuesday's game won by the Irish by a score of 4-3. The • first period belonged to the Irish as they scored a pair of goals and kept the Braves off the scoreboard. Shortly before this Lucan goalie Doug Haskell stopped Andy Gibb from point blank range and then did the same to Bill Matetich. The only Lucan goal that came when the teams were playing even strength was notched by Bob -Thirlwall at 9:35 as he banked a shot off the inside of the Tavistock goalie's pad. Grant Larsen assisted. It was based on the fact captain Bob Thirlwall who was serving a minor penalty was not . allowed to return _ when Tavistock scored. Referee Brad Horton ruled Thirlwall had to stay in the box because the major penalty was still in effect. The OHA board meeting in Kit- chener Monday night agreed with the Lucan submission that the referee had Inade a Mistake but added, the in- cident did not give Tavistock a distinct advantage which the rule book calls for and rejected the protest. Irish manager Jim Hearn argued that the ,call put his team into a distinct disadvantage, but that ter- minology is not in the rule book. In talking about the protest Hearn added, "f want to make it clear that we were not protesting against . Tavistock, but against the referee's decision. We were only being fair to our players in lodging the protest." At Monday's meeting the Irish were represented by Manager Hearn, president Clare Stanley and executive member Bob Taylor. Sitting in from Tavistock were George Regier, Dwayne Roy and Wilfred "Pop" Rosenburg.
