Local junior baseball team starts practices on weekend
The current warm summer-like weather is bringing baseball
to the front burner in the minds of young athletes in the area.
Brad Gregus called on the weekend to report the first prac-
tice session for his Exeter junior baseball team which will again
be sponsored by the Exeter District Co -Operative.
Gregus and his coaches will be taking an initial look at all pro-
spects for the team this coming Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the
South Huron Rec "Centre grounds diamond.
Any young man who has not reached his 21st birthday by the
last day of December in 1986 will be eligible to play for thedocal
club. Gregus asks anyone eligible from not only Exeter and area,
but from South Huron and North Middlesex counties -to try out for
the team. -
This is an important year for the junior club as they plan the
upcoming season leading up to a grand finale with the staging of
the Ontario Junior "D" baseball championship tournament in Ex-
eter on the Labour Day weekend.
More Upsets?
Upsets seem to happen almost every year in the National
Hockey League and this year doesn't appear to be any exception.
Two of the four -division champions were eliminated in the first
round. They were the St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers.
The biggest upset was provided by the Quebec Nordiques as
they made short shrift of the Whalers in four straight games after
losing the first two.
. This is an exact reversal of the results" of a year ago and is
an-exampleof taking turns being fair play, --A year ago the Nordi-
ques finished first in their division and were bounced in three
straight games by the then fourth place upstarts from Hartford.
This time around the Whalers finished on top ahead of the
defending champion Montreal Canadiens while the Nordiques had
problems in beating the Buffalo -Sabres for the last playoff spot.
We talked to Dave Shaw a few days before the playoffs started
and he felt the Nordiques were conning on strong and could be peak-
ing in time to oust the Whalers. That's exactly what happened as
the Nordiques waited until the third game to start reaching for their
peak and they never looked back in getting rid of the Whalers. How
much the Quebec team is able to continue their playoff peak will
depend a lot on their next opponents from the Canadiens
The quick collapse of Hartford has made possible another edi-
tion of the Battle of Quebec. Here again is another reverse situa-
tion from ayear ago when the Canadiens were given little chance

in the playoffs and went on to take home Lord Stanley's coveted
trophy. At the same time Quebec was given a good shot to take
it all. -
Getting back to Dave Shaw, he will be out of action for at least
another 10 days from his bout with mono..He was on skates Fri-
day and was completely exhausted after a couple of turns around
the ice.
We will go against the odds and pick the Nordiques to continue
with the upset trend to beat the Canadiens. In two of the other
rounds we go out on another -limb in choosing the Winnipeg Jets.
to oust the Edmonton Oilers while the Philadelphia Flyers should
take care of the Islanders. - -
The most severe rivalry in the next playoff round will come
in the Highway 461 series as the Detroit Red Wings and 'Toronto
Maple Leafs do battle. Many fans will be using 401 in going back
and forth between the two cities where Stanley Cup fever is high.
For what it is worth we will take the Red Wings.
There were a lot of tired hockey fans in the area Sunday mor-
ning after sticking with the NHL telecast until 2 a.m. throughthree
full periods of sudden -death overtime.
We were at the Junior 'D' game in Lucan and were able to get
home and still see what amounted to three full periods of play.
A comment from Harry Neale was interesting. Ile said he liad
never seen so many scoring chances in sudden -death playoff over-
time. You were absolutely correct, Harry. Most people have never
seen a sudden -death playoff game that went that long making for
many scoring opportunities.
Irish Back in Gear
After probably their worst performance of the season Tues-
day night, the Lucan Irish bounced back Saturday to beat the
Tavistock Braves 5-2 and regain their one game lead in the all -
Ontario Junior 'D' final.
If the Irish won last night's game in Tavistock they could wrap
up the provincial title on home ice, Thursday night.
Coach Ed Parkinson said his players were definitely over con-
fident as they lost the second game. He added. "Tavistock is a
much better club than most of us gave them credit for. We have
a real battle on our hands."
A Brewing Teanl.
What's cooking in Milwaukee? Actually it should be what's
brewing? The Milwaukee Brewers are trying to emulate the 1984
Detroit Tigers_who went 35 -and five in their first 40 games of the
American League season. -
The Brewers in an amazing comeback Sunday afternoon
scored five times after one was out in the bottom of the ninth inn-
ing to beat the Texas Rangers for their 12th straight win. That's
an American League record to start a season.
