Home, garden show a success, plan for next year
The second annual Exeter Optimist
club Honte and Garden Show was a
huge success on the weekend and
organizers are already making plans
for next year's edition.
Optimist club president Mark
Heimrich said his group is looking fog•
ward to making the 1988 show bigger
and better than ever.
lleimrith commented, "The only
way we can make the show bigger's
by using more exhibitor space at the
Rec Centre and probably a large tent.
There have also been suggestions to
'novo the food concessions outside."
He added, "We are continually try-
ing to improve the quality of the show
and the exhibitors are definitely do-
ing that themselves."
Tfie show which got underway Fri-
day evening and concluded late Sun-
day afternoon attracted more than
4,000 pay ingus;tomels.
A question/Sire filled out by most
of the exhibitors returned showing
very enthusiastic and positive
responses. Most asked to have the
same space reserved for next year.
In addition to viewing the 85 ex-
hibits, visitors had a chance to watch
a fashion show and performances by
the BX 93 trick bike team.
Everyone of the 85 replies were
pleased with the general layout, at-
tendance, response, services and
were interested in booking for the 1988
home and garden show.
One reply Was, "Very nice at-
mosphere and nice personnel. I will
seriously consider doubling my floor
space for next year."
Additional comments from ex-
hibitors were as follows:
"The show was another great suc-
cess. All good comments and a good

Ice renters
are flexible
Negotiations for next season's ice
time at the South Huron rec centre
are now underway and rec director
Lynne Farquhar told the board on
Thursday that most groups appear to
be flexible.
There were several problems over
the designation of ice time last season
and the matter ended up going to Ex- •
eter council for resolution.
Miss Farquhar said most of.the
groups she has talked to realize the
problems "and are prepared to bend
a little':.
There is also some general discus-
sion on forming a minor sports group
to bring Al organizations together for
common pursuits.
The rec director said there appears
to be some interest as the groups see
the possibilities of having one voice in
going to the board for matters to be
resolved as well as in fund raising
efforts.
"There's a lot of potential for a lot
of things," she added.
Her report indicated that three
spring programs have been dropped
because of lack of interest. The re-
quired 11 registrants were not receiv-
ed for food processing, sign language
and photography.
A report on the March break ac-
tivities showed a profit of $77.48, but
the expenses included the board's nor-
mal ice time fees and that actually •
resulted in a profit total of $248.98.°
fir
response. Thank you for a good
snow.
"Please book me for a spot next
year. Same place. Very pleased with •
the show. The Optimists were most
helpful-"
"Excellent response.As I have been .
in business for only a short time this
• event was a tremendous way to
advertise."
"Great show. Very well organized."
"Excellent and professional show."
"Super job of promotion,"
"Very beneficial to our business."
"Excellent and professional show.
Super job." - -
"Well organized. Appreciated that
you cut back the hours open on Satur-
day from 12 noon to 10 p.m."
"Very well done for your second
show. Looking forward to the third.
Great exhibits and friendly
exhibitors."
"Another great show. Congratula-
tions. A few people mentioned that the
Exetershow is good because it is still
predominantly a home and garden
show.'
Several returns suggested a break
of an hour and a half at the supper
hour on Saturday evening and a
number of others wanted show hours
lengthened and others thought they
should be shortened.
One mentioned the success of the
place mats used in area restaurants
prior to the show. President Heimrich
said 20,000 were handed out.
Another suggestion was made to
make more use of the mezzanine area
for demonstrations. In this regard
Heimrich said that is already being
considered with expansion of . the
fashion show. -
• Heimrich said he wished to pay
tribute to Dirk Coolman who was the
founder and driving force behind the
first show a year ago. "It was because
of Dirk that we were able to be suc-
cessful again this year." -
The Optimist president said he
wished to pay special thanks to the
South Huron Rec Centre staff, the
public for their support. the exhibitors
for their co-operation and patronage
and the special Optimist committee.
The Optimist committee included
Bob Spears. Peter Hrudka, Wayne
Truemner, Jim Bishop. Ross Long,
Tom Bowen. and Bill Simpson.
DiscOvering facts
of Usborne history
Hurondale Post Office located in
the front hall of a farm house, on Lot
31, Concession 3, Usborne Township,
was established on July 1, 1895. It
was closed on January 1, 1914 when
rural mail delivery was started. Since
the post office and schools were close-
ly situated, the school children would.
bring the mail home daily from
school. _
Farm land'located on Lot A, Con-
cession 8, Osborne Township was
brought from the Canada Company in
1856 for a token price of 25 cents. A
portion of this land was purchased in
1876 for a cemetery now_ owned by
Zion West United Church. Some ear-
ly prices for an eight grave lot were
$2.00 while a single grave was 25
cents. The fee to dig and fill a grave
was 50 cents.
These are some of the facts of
Usborne Township that are being
discovered by the Usborne Township
History Book Committee.
The committee was formed in
November 1986 and have been
meeting monthly during 1987. At the
April 1 meeting, Fern Dougall, chair-
man along with Gwen Coward,
Garnet Hicks, Kenneth Oke, Howard
Pym, Delmer Skinner, Ross Hodgert,
Ken Duncan, Walter Creery, Mary
Blackler and Greta Richards discuss-
ed the topics of chapters to be includ-
ed in the History Book.
June 1991 is the projected date to
have the history book ready for sale. ,
The book will be printed in bookshelf
size.
Every resident of Usbornetownship
is reminded to hunt through their at-
tics for early photographs or impor-
tant papers for use in the book. If they
have any information which could be
of use for the history of Usborne
Township please be sure and contact
any of the committee members.
