Moot to discuss fisheries management
The Wingham District of 'the
Ministery of Natural Resources is
holding a public meeting to discuss
the District Fisheries Management
Plan. It is scheduled for April 21 at the
Clinton Legion hall at 7:30 p.10.
The purpose of this meeting is to
provide the public with the opportuni-
ty to discuss this draft plan.
"The plan is the culmination of a
process which examined the produc-
tion capabilities of the, fisheries
resource, the demand placed upon it
by users and the factors which have
prevented full resource benefit from
being realized," said District
Biologist Mike Malhiot. "
"Targets were identified as a
Means ot measuring progress in the.
management of the resource. The
target for angling opportunities by the
year 2000 includes an increase, over
current use. of 15 percent for warm
water species and 73percent for cold
water species." he added.
Some of the significant manage-
ment programs which will be im-
plemented include`.

the public in the management of
fisheries;
• greater -emphasiswill be placed -
on protectingfish habitat when alter-
natives to watercourses are requested

The third annual season of Gay Lea
1 er onspiels is complete.
Seven -hundred and sixty curlers par-
ticipted in nine events held in
- southern Ontario where (:ay Lea has
begin ing.in.1990-if hatchery -supplies-=
are available: -
• 60.000 yearling rainbow trout will
be planted annually in cold water
tributaries of Lake Huron:
• 15,000 yearling brook trout will be
planted annually in cold water
streams: .
• stream rehabilitation programs
will be expanded and the public will
be encouraged to adopt creeks and
undertake their own projects.
Some of the -options which receiv-
ed serious consideration but which
were rejected included: " -
• establishingfly fishing only and
no -kill sections:. -
• producing chinook salmon in provin-
cial hatcheries for stocking in Lake
Huron;
• continuing -to stock catchable
-size trout (put and take) in ponds
where other trout fishing oppor-
tunities are available nearby.

"-We feel that curling is a great
sport for us to -he involved with.- said
Vince' -Kishimoto. Gay Lea's
marketing manager. "It gives us an
opportunity to put something back in-
to the community where we have a
presence and to -sample our products
to an enthusiastic group of curlers'-.
Many of the bonspiefs acted as a
catalyst to bring all the club members
together for a single event. At some
of the smaller clubs the majority 01
the members wew-involved either as
Swat wins, participants, organizers. kitchen help
or spectators. •

The regularschedule of the Exeter
Legion mixed dart league was com-
pleted Friday night and the Swat "
team emerged, as league champions
with 11.2 games to their credit. -
Georgie Sims recorded the most
game wins for the ladies with :30 and
Dan Heywood was best -for the male
competitors at 42.

shuffleboard
The high scores at Tuesday's
regular shuffleboard competition in
six games were shared by Joe Gosar
and Harold Beaver with identical
536's. Next in line were Meine
Eizenga 378 and Allan Johns 314.
Olive Essery was best for the ladies
in six games with a score of 424. Next
came Pearl McKnight 330 and Verda
Lightfoot 295.
Five game scores for the men were
Howard Johns 450. Mahlon Ryckman
297 and. John Pepper 277.
Olive Essery was back in the
limelight Wednesday with a 514 mark
to lead the ladies in the six game set.
Other top scores were Verda
' Lightfoot 391 and Jean !fern 348.
Leading the male participants were
John Eberle 473. Ross Richardson 460
and Joe Gosar 422.
At the final event of the year. held
in Teeswater. Liz Cross. the Gay Lea
co-ordinator of the events. announc-
ed that "Gay Lea is pleased with its
association with curling and will un-
doubtedly return for a seventh year
of support."
