The Lucan Irish won two games
this week and have taken two giant
steps towards the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D"
championship.
A COOL COACH — Coach Ed
Parkinson of the Lucan Irish is
showing his cool composure as
the last minute of Tuesday's
game is played in which his club
eliminated the Brussels Bulls:
Tuesday night at the Lucan Com-
munity ('entre, the Irish scored an
impressive 6-2 win over the Brussels
Bulls to win that semi-final series
three games to two.
Now it's into the final round for the
all -Ontario championship and the
Tavistock Braces are the only stumbl-
ing block for another title.
The Irish won the provincial crown
in the 1981-82 season and the follow-
ing year the winners were Tavistock.
The first game of the best -of -seven
final series was played in Tavistock
Friday night and the Irish came away
with a 6-3 win, but it was a costly vic-
tory as centre Wayne Urbshott suf-
fered a dislocated shoulder and will
be out for the rest of the series.
In the flip of the coin to determine
home team advantage for the final
series, Lucan won the flip, but due to
scheduling circumstances the first
game was played in Tavistock.
The second game went in Lucan
last night, Tuesday and the third con-
test is also st for Lucan. It is set for
Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. with the
fourth game in Tavistock Tuesday
night.
The Irish injury string began in the
test is also set for Lucan. It is set for
Scott Denomy suffered -a broken
hand.
Although pleased with the first
game victory over Tavistock, Lucan
manager Jim Hearn cautioned. "We
must remember they had a long
layoff after beating Langton in the
other semi-final series. They are a big
team and will be hard to handle.
A good second period
The Irish broke the first game of the
finals wide open with four
unanswered goals in the second
period after the first 20 minutes of ac-
tion resulted in a 1-1 tie.
Lucan was first to score with Jesse
GETS MVP AWARD Brod Muir was named the most valuable

Crawford who turned out to be the
scoring star converting a pass from
Brad Hodgins at 11:45.
Only 39 seconds later, Dave Wiffen
put the Tavistock club even on the
score board.
Penalties played a big part in the
Irish scoring splurge in the middle
frame. Two of the four goals came on
power plays and a third was shot with
the Braves enjoying a one man
advantage.
The first power play score was not-
ched by Jesse Crawford. This time
the assist was provided by Wayne
Urbshott shortly before he was
injured.
With less than seven minutes left
and the teams playing even, Grant
Larsen completed a three-way pass-
ing combination with Paul Barnes
and Brad Hodgins.
Crawford with his third successful.
shot of the night made it 4-1 potting
in passes from Bob Thirlwall and Ron
Goodhand at 17:30 with Eaton of
Tavistock off for roughing. Only four
seconds of his penalty had expired
when Crawford scored.
The shorthanded marker came
with a minute to go in the middle stan-
za as Brad Muir registered on a solo
effort with team-mate Paul DePlan-
cke sitting put a penalty.
The Irish made the score 6-1 early
in the third period on another man ad-
vantage situation as Mark Bannon hit
paydirt with Crawford assisting for
his fourth point of the game.
Shortly afterwards Tavistock
scored a pair of quick goals by Kevin
Yantzi and Charlie Lupton, but that's
all the success they were able to have
against Irish goalie Doug Haskett.
Penalties were a dime a dozen as
referee Mike D'Abrem called 29
penalties against the Irish and 25 to
Tavistock. The shots on goal were
won by Lucan by 31 to 30.
Win series at home
The Irish were able to win the semi-
final series against Brussels on home
ice as they chalked up a 6-2 victory.
Western Junior "D" convener
Wayne Smith of Belmont was on hand
to present the overall league trophy
to Lucan captain Bob Thirlwall and
alternate captains Wayne Urbshott
and Rob Hardy.
In the first period the Irish were
able to overcome two Brussels power
play goals and score one of their own
to lead 3-1 at the first rest session.
Tim Fritz notched both goals for the
Bulls. The first came at 10:50 with
Paul DePlacke off and the second
with only 17 seconds remaining and
Wayne Urbshott sitting out an in-
terference call.
In between those two Brussels
goals, the Lucan Irish counted three
times. Wayne Urbshott started it off
by converting a pass from Ron
Goodhand and then Grant Larsen
fired two quick successful shots. Get-
ting assists were Paul Barnes, Dean
Doerr, Goodhand and Urbshott.
Urbshott's score came on a high 30
foot shot from the right side, Larsen
notched his first as he was left alone
in front of the net and the second
came from a scramble around the
net.
In the third period Wayne Urbshott

Although most of last year's team
is back Cook invites new players to
try out. He added, "We may have nine
or 10 back from a year ago, but that's
not enough to go a full season."
Missing from the lineup this year
will be Barry Baynham, Randy Kraut
and Jeff Lindenfield.
The Royals will again be competing
in the Southwestern Fastball Associa-
tion with seven other clubs including
two from Lucan, Nairn, Poplar Hill,
Ilderton, Lieury and West Corners.
The first home game for the Royals
in the regular schedule will be Thurs-
day, May 7 at 9 p.m.
