Lois Godbolt, a founding member of the Exeter chapter of Block Parents, was on hand to answer questions. She said any responsible citizen aged 16 and over who has been screened by the police can be a Block Parent. Lois said that often children need help in the hours from dinner to bedtime, so working couples can be Block Parents, as. can senior citizens. Lois stressed the importance of be- ing available when the sign -is in the window, and the equal importance of taking it down even if you are in the back yard and may not hear the door bell. She said the sign should be in a secure spot like a window, and not tucked into a screen door where it could be taken by an unauthorized parson. Block Parents are not expected to provide food or drink, toilet facilities, transportation or first aid. They are not required to leave home to break up fights or actively engage a dangerous person. Block Parents do offer help' to children alarmed, by strangers or vicious animals, or those 111, bullied, lost, involved in an accident or caught in severe weather conditions. Anne and Rosemary will be publicizing the program, and asking tor• volunteers.
