Express planning defence of Ontario
Here we are in the twilight zone of hockey and.the dawning
of a new day for the sport of baseball.
Had a call this week from Geary Penhale,,general manager
of the Exeter senior Express baseball team. Geary said his club
is shaping up well to defend their Ontario Baseball Association
Senior 'D' championship.
Penhale along with field manager Joe Fulop are planning an
indoor workout at the South Huron District High School new gym
on Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
Most of last year's players are expected back. The only doubt-
ful starter is catcher -Paul Gilmour who will be tryingto break in-
to the lineup of the London Majors in the Senior lntercounty league. I.
Members of the 1986 Championship pitching staff expected to
return are Jeff Fuller, Steve Pearce, Brian Horner and Mike Neil
along with junior graduate Kevin Dreiger.
The Express will again be participating in the Great Lakes
league. They will be competing with Walkerton, Strathroy, Thorn -
dale and Seaforth in a double home and home schedule in the senior
'division and single home and home games with junior clubs from
Strathroy, Walkerton, Listowel, Lakeside and Exeter.
The first regular game for the Express will be on their home
field at the South Huron Rec Centre grounds Tuesday May 12 at
6:15 p.m. with the new Seaforth team supplying the opposition.
On the local junior baseball scene, Manager Brad Gregus has
a call out for coaching help for his team which will again be span- haven't seen anything yet.

Big V Bullets capture title
in New Hamburg tourney
The Exeter Big V Bullets scored
three straight victories to win the 'A'
championship in a recent houseleague
pee wee hockey tournament in New
Hamburg.
The Bullets opened -the tourney with
a 5-4 win over St. Marys in overtime.
Keeping their loyal fans in suspense
again in the second contest the locals
again went into overtime. This time
they edged the New Hamburg
Bookers 2-1.
In the championship contest, the
Bullets needed only three regular
periods of play to dispose of a Kit-.
chener team by a :3-0 score.
The first game of the tourney saw
St. Marys jump into a 2-0 early lead
on goals from the sticks of Jeremy
Slater and Mike MacDonald.
Early in the second period. the
Bullets tied the score quickly in a
span of only nine seconds.
Brad Elschner converted a pass
from Jeremy Hrudka and Mark
Crichton registered on a pass from
Brett Rideout.
Another minute and 27 seconds
later the Bullets moved into a one goal
lead as Brad Elschner notched his se-
cond score of the game with the assist
credited to Kevin Johns.
St. Marys bounced right back to
knot the score as Mike MacDonald
fired his second goal with Rob Daykin
assisting.
With two minutes to go in the mid-
dle frame, Exeter captain Ryan
Lindenfield broke away to score on an.
unassisted effort and his team was in
front 4-3.
Rob Daykin of St. Marys scored the
only goal of the third period to send
the game into sudden -death overtime.
The sudden win for the Bullets
came at 4:15 of extra play as Ryan
Lindenfield steered in a pass from
Geoff Sanders.
Late game scoring
. In the 16th game of the tournament
and the second for the Bullets all the
scoring was confined to the late
stages.
After Geoff Sanders had put the
Bullets on the scoreboard at 2:59 of
the third period on a pass from Brett
Rideout, Shawn Leys tied the score
for New Hamburg.
With less than two minutes gone in
overtime, captain Ryan Lindenfield

brought the Exeter tans to their Leet
as he completed a three-way passing
combination with Brad Thompson
and Kevin Johns.
In the championship game, Exeter
goalie Richard Phillips was able to
turn away all Kitchener shots to get
a well earned shutout.
The game was scoreless until less
than two minutes remained in the se-
cond period. At that point Ryan
Lindenfield hit the opposing net with
assists going to 'Mark Crichton and
Jeremy Hrudka.
Midway through the third period
the Bullets moved ahead by two goals
as Geoff Sanders registered on an
unassisted effort.
The icing was put on the Exeter win
with a minute and 27 seconds remain-
ing as Brad Elschner counted on a
solo dash.

Brock and trainer Steve Johns and

to even guess who will emerge as the winner. It could be any of
the four and don't be surprised if the Toronto Leafs emerge as the
best of the worst.
When it gets down to the finals for the Stanley Cup in late May
let's say Winnipeg against Washington. Away you go to lay wagers
on the other teams.
Who won?
The battle of major league salaries seems to be leaning to the
team owners. One by one the big stars are being signed up for what
they were originally offered and in some instances much less.
It looks as if the time of the high priced free agent is almost
over. Its many cases after lots of publicity the big hero fails to pro-
duce like he is expected to.
After coming to terms with the Boston Red Sox withhelp from
the commissioner, Cy Young winner Roger Clemens wasted little
time in showing he was ready to. go. Clemens pitched six perfect
innings Saturday. Although it was against a college team the Red
Sox were happy with his performance.
Where's the spark
In Saturday's Detroit News, Tiger manager Sparky Anderson
was quoted as saying this was his best spring training ever. He
must have been talking strictly personally because the Tigers end-
ed up with nine wins and 20 losses. That's their worst record since
1958.
Anderson shocked the Detroit media by.bringing four catchers
north. He must be trying to make up in quantity for the loss of quali-
ty catcher Lance Parrish._.

Janice Capitano of Lucan turned in a three game score of 926.
