Had a call this week from Geary Penhale,,general manager of the Exeter senior Express baseball team. Geary said his club is shaping up well to defend their Ontario Baseball Association Senior 'D' championship. Penhale along with field manager Joe Fulop are planning an indoor workout at the South Huron District High School new gym on Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. Most of last year's players are expected back. The only doubt- ful starter is catcher -Paul Gilmour who will be tryingto break in- to the lineup of the London Majors in the Senior lntercounty league. I. Members of the 1986 Championship pitching staff expected to return are Jeff Fuller, Steve Pearce, Brian Horner and Mike Neil along with junior graduate Kevin Dreiger. The Express will again be participating in the Great Lakes league. They will be competing with Walkerton, Strathroy, Thorn - dale and Seaforth in a double home and home schedule in the senior 'division and single home and home games with junior clubs from Strathroy, Walkerton, Listowel, Lakeside and Exeter. The first regular game for the Express will be on their home field at the South Huron Rec Centre grounds Tuesday May 12 at 6:15 p.m. with the new Seaforth team supplying the opposition. As for the Norris division it will take more than a crystal ball Big V Bullets capture title in New Hamburg tourney The Exeter Big V Bullets scored three straight victories to win the 'A' championship in a recent houseleague pee wee hockey tournament in New Hamburg. The Bullets opened -the tourney with a 5-4 win over St. Marys in overtime. Keeping their loyal fans in suspense again in the second contest the locals again went into overtime. This time they edged the New Hamburg Bookers 2-1. In the championship contest, the Bullets needed only three regular periods of play to dispose of a Kit-. chener team by a :3-0 score. The first game of the tourney saw St. Marys jump into a 2-0 early lead on goals from the sticks of Jeremy Slater and Mike MacDonald. Early in the second period. the Bullets tied the score quickly in a span of only nine seconds. Brad Elschner converted a pass from Jeremy Hrudka and Mark Crichton registered on a pass from Brett Rideout. Another minute and 27 seconds later the Bullets moved into a one goal lead as Brad Elschner notched his se- cond score of the game with the assist credited to Kevin Johns. St. Marys bounced right back to knot the score as Mike MacDonald fired his second goal with Rob Daykin assisting. With two minutes to go in the mid- dle frame, Exeter captain Ryan Lindenfield broke away to score on an. unassisted effort and his team was in front 4-3. Rob Daykin of St. Marys scored the only goal of the third period to send the game into sudden -death overtime. The sudden win for the Bullets came at 4:15 of extra play as Ryan Lindenfield steered in a pass from Geoff Sanders. Late game scoring . In the 16th game of the tournament and the second for the Bullets all the scoring was confined to the late stages. After Geoff Sanders had put the Bullets on the scoreboard at 2:59 of the third period on a pass from Brett Rideout, Shawn Leys tied the score for New Hamburg. In the championship game, Exeter goalie Richard Phillips was able to turn away all Kitchener shots to get a well earned shutout. The game was scoreless until less than two minutes remained in the se- cond period. At that point Ryan Lindenfield hit the opposing net with assists going to 'Mark Crichton and Jeremy Hrudka. Midway through the third period the Bullets moved ahead by two goals as Geoff Sanders registered on an unassisted effort. The icing was put on the Exeter win with a minute and 27 seconds remain- ing as Brad Elschner counted on a solo dash. The Bullets' were handled by manager Pete McFalls, coach Bill Brock and trainer Steve Johns and sponsored by the local Big V Drug store. Where's the spark In Saturday's Detroit News, Tiger manager Sparky Anderson was quoted as saying this was his best spring training ever. He must have been talking strictly personally because the Tigers end- ed up with nine wins and 20 losses. That's their worst record since 1958. Anderson shocked the Detroit media by.bringing four catchers north.
