Cardiff tells neighbours
of need to keep the faith
Murray Cardiff, Huron -Middlesex
MP and Grey Township farmer,
assured his neighbours that the
federal government is looking out for
their best interests. and suggested
that they keep the faith during cur-
rent international and bilateral
negotiations.
Speaking to about 25 members at
the annual meeting of ,the Grey
Township Federation of Agriculture
on Saturday, Cardiff said that his
government is only interested in deals
that benefit Canadians, includipg
Canadian farmers.
Although recognizing that there are
farmers who favour free trade as well
-as those who are opposed to the con-
cept, Cardiff promised that Canada is
seeking to improve access to lower
tariff levels and to establish a better
mechanism for resolving trade
disputes in the current free trade
talks with the USA.
"But we have no interest what-
soever in negotiating away our right
to decide what kind of marketing
systems work for our farm - corn:
modifies. We are working toward a
mutually beneficial trade agreement
with the U.S." he said, noting that
If you can't believe Perrin Beatty.
Canada's defence minister. who can
you believe?
Mr. Beatty made a solemn promise
-- and repeated it during a question
period -- to a meeting of farmers in
Fergus recently that marketing
boards are safe from Canada -U.S.
trade talks.
Perrin -Beatty is a career politician._
Ile has been in the House of Commons
for a dozen years or more. I believe
he was the youngest member of
parliament when he was elected. Ile
has held three Cabinet posts and has
been effective in all of them.
Ile has rarely. if ever. received any
had press because he is an extreme-
ly intelligent, well-read. articulate
and popularyoung man.
"We're not about to dismantle our
marketing hoards or the Canadian
'A heat board...any more than the U.S.
is likely to dismantle its Commodity
.Credit Corporation," Mr. Beatty told
the farmers. "Canada's marketing
boards are not on the ( negotiation )
taple,.-
He did tell farmers, though, that if
they want more marketing hoards. it
will be up.to them because the Con-
servative government is not putting
pressure on farmers to organize
them. a different tack than that of the
Liberals when Eugene Whelan was
Canada's.agminister. Whelan urged
farmers to organize.
Beatty was asked if trade
negotiators might guarantee no more
supply management boards for other
farm products such as pork or beef.
Again. an honest answer: "I don't
know." he said.
It is a rare occasion when politi-

of admiration for Mr-. Beatty. I have
mel him on a couple of occasions and
have always found him approachable: --
Ile is a bright light in a rather dull
Cabinet. In his lengthy political life -- •
although he is still a relatively young
man, I believe -- helms never been
tarred with any kind of scandal. He
was given the revenue minister's
portfolio when that ministry was in.a
terrible state. when almost every
Canadian had a horror story to tell
about the tax department.
by Sob Loner Eldal. Ra Erm.+a Om N38 2C 7 / -
_Ile managed to turn that ministry
around in a couple of years and when
a Cabinet shuffle came up, he was
transferred to the defence hotpotat9.
So far; he has managed to make a lit-
tle progress there, as well, although
it is one of the toughest in Cabinet. It
-. is littered with career military men
and- women who have their own
definite ideas about how the depart-
ment should work.
Beatty has. so far. managed to jug-.
gle them expertly. And -that is not an
easy task.

Exercise can bean effective stress

your spine's support.
Reducing a' potbelly and
strengthening your abdominals are '
major factors in reducing a sway-
back and decreasing the force exerted
on the back. Along with strengthen-
ing your muscles. it's also important
to stretch Them out. Tight. shortened
muscles can upset muscular balance
which increases the chances offback
injury. Stretching exercises make
muscles more flexible and motion
easier.
Good posture gives your back the
support it needs. Silting tends to tilt
the pelvis the wrong way and is more
stressful for your hack than standing
or walking. It's best not to sit too long
and to get up. stretch, and walk
around occasionally. Standing for
long periods of lime can also put a
strain on your back. .

Well, if you can't believe Perrin

promised that the marketing boards
which exist now will not be part of

1 believe him.
Murray Bray as to the chances of the
government paying farmers not to'
plant corn, he did agree that farmers
must guard against the inroads on
agriculture that the animal-rights ac-
tivists may make.
"Emotions runs high on these
issues," Cardiff said. "We all have to
support our colleagues to make sure
these people don't lobby hard enough
to make changes in our (agricultural )
industry."
Brenda McIntosh of RR 4 Seaforth,
first vice-president of the HFA and a
member of one of the federal Farm
Debt Review Boards since January.
was also on hand to explain the role
of the Board.
She said that her duties had taken
her away from home four days a
week over the past few months. ex-
plarning that the problems afflicting
farmers were much the same all
across the province, the major one be-
ing the necessity of leaving the farm
to work outside.
She said that the Board had receiv-
ed 454 applications for debt review to
this date. and that 144 of these files
had already been completed. while
another 194 are still active.
"We are trying to bring compassion
into the process of debt review." Ms.
Macintosh said. "Where there is any
chance at all for a farmer ro stay on
the farm. we have been able to come
to some arrangement with his
creditors to make it possible. Wewant
to see them still on the farms in a few
years, and able to meet their financial
commitments. •
