Speaking to about 25 members at the annual meeting of ,the Grey Township Federation of Agriculture on Saturday, Cardiff said that his government is only interested in deals that benefit Canadians, includipg Canadian farmers. Although recognizing that there are farmers who favour free trade as well -as those who are opposed to the con- cept, Cardiff promised that Canada is seeking to improve access to lower tariff levels and to establish a better mechanism for resolving trade disputes in the current free trade talks with the USA. "But we have no interest what- soever in negotiating away our right to decide what kind of marketing systems work for our farm - corn: modifies. We are working toward a mutually beneficial trade agreement with the U.S." he said, noting that If you can't believe Perrin Beatty. Canada's defence minister. who can you believe? Mr. Beatty made a solemn promise -- and repeated it during a question period -- to a meeting of farmers in Fergus recently that marketing boards are safe from Canada -U.S. trade talks. Perrin -Beatty is a career politician._ Ile has been in the House of Commons for a dozen years or more. I believe he was the youngest member of parliament when he was elected. Ile has held three Cabinet posts and has been effective in all of them. Ile has rarely. if ever. received any had press because he is an extreme- ly intelligent, well-read. articulate and popularyoung man. "We're not about to dismantle our marketing hoards or the Canadian 'A heat board...any more than the U.S. is likely to dismantle its Commodity .Credit Corporation," Mr. Beatty told the farmers. "Canada's marketing boards are not on the ( negotiation ) taple,.- He did tell farmers, though, that if they want more marketing hoards. it will be up.to them because the Con- servative government is not putting pressure on farmers to organize them. a different tack than that of the Liberals when Eugene Whelan was Canada's.agminister. Whelan urged farmers to organize. Beatty was asked if trade negotiators might guarantee no more supply management boards for other farm products such as pork or beef. Again. an honest answer: "I don't know." he said. I have mel him on a couple of occasions and have always found him approachable: -- Ile is a bright light in a rather dull Cabinet. In his lengthy political life -- • although he is still a relatively young man, I believe -- helms never been tarred with any kind of scandal. Condition your muscles to work as a team by starting a regular exercise program. Include . exercises that 'strengthen the muscles in your back. upper legs.' and especially the abdomen to increase your spine's support. Reducing a' potbelly and strengthening your abdominals are ' major factors in reducing a sway- back and decreasing the force exerted on the back. Along with strengthen- ing your muscles. it's also important to stretch Them out. Tight. shortened muscles can upset muscular balance which increases the chances offback injury. Stretching exercises make muscles more flexible and motion easier. Good posture gives your back the support it needs. Silting tends to tilt the pelvis the wrong way and is more stressful for your hack than standing or walking. It's best not to sit too long and to get up. stretch, and walk around occasionally. When the talks began it was said agriculture would not be on the table. That proved untrue. Farmers then voiced their fears of marketing _. hoards being dismantled. To he p ecrease this strain, stand with one foot elevated at a comfor- table level and switch feel every half hour or so. ('heck your posture by placing your head and hack against a wall. Move your pelvis forward, bend your knees slightly so that your back touches the wall, and walk away holding that position. It it feels com- fortable. your normal posture is pro- bably ok. - Sleeping rests your hack because while lying down. it doesn't have to support your body weight. To pro- mote the most restful sleep. use a firm mattress or waterbed and sleep on your side with your knees bent or on your back with your knees elevated. It's up to you. He has promised that the marketing boards which exist now will not be part of freer trade talks. 1 believe him. Brenda McIntosh of RR 4 Seaforth, first vice-president of the HFA and a member of one of the federal Farm Debt Review Boards since January. was also on hand to explain the role of the Board. She said that her duties had taken her away from home four days a week over the past few months. ex- plarning that the problems afflicting farmers were much the same all across the province, the major one be- ing the necessity of leaving the farm to work outside. She said that the Board had receiv- ed 454 applications for debt review to this date. and that 144 of these files had already been completed. while another 194 are still active. "We are trying to bring compassion into the process of debt review." Ms. Macintosh said. "Where there is any chance at all for a farmer ro stay on the farm. we have been able to come to some arrangement with his creditors to make it possible. Wewant to see them still on the farms in a few years, and able to meet their financial commitments. • Everybody is ignorant, only on dif- ferent subjects.
