Eckert is critical
of deficit headlines
William Eckert, director of educa-
tion with the Huron -Perth County
Roman Catholic Separate School
Board, expressed his concern at a
board meeting Monday over
headlines on the board's deficit in re-
cent newspapers.
Eckert said he felt the newspapers'
headlines needed clarification as they
gave readers a mistaken impression
of $338,000 deficit at the end of 1986.
Ile had a copy of the board report as
carried by the Mitchell Advocate with
headline High School Expenses cause
Huge Deficit.
The deficit was blamed on the lack
of government grants for the start-up
expenses of the new secondary school
in Stratford. The extensive renovation
of the St. Michael's. Elementary
school to convert, it to St. Michae
Secondary School had not been ar
proved by the Ministry of Educatio,
when the work was done and th
Ministry would not approve the graft
fr'r work already completed.

Trustee "Ronald Murray, finance

cidn't get any grants for the start up

le didn't know how the deficit will be

In other business, contract talks
between the board and the teachers'
negotiating committee are continuing
without the need of an arbitrator.
A number of staff changes were ap-
proved at the board meeting Monday
night. Inez Haid, who taught at St.
Mary's School at Hesson for many
years, has retired. Rhoda Daniel, of
Holy Name of Mary • School In St.
Marys has resigned. Linda Wagg and
Maureen Sabin were granted one-
year leaves of absence. Brian Mor-
rissy was given four days leave of
absence to attend a teachers' meeting
for the purpose of fulfilling respon-
sibilities on the provincial teacher--
welfare
eacher-welfare committee for the Ontario
English Catholic Teachers'
Association.
Gaetan Blanchette, one of the
superintendents of education for the
hoard, spoke on the teaching of
French and he said coming up in the
locals T1s will be an extension of
the Fri uch classes from 20 minutes
to 40 minutes. He said the program
