RECOVER FUNDS.
The Ministry of Health has moved
to recover approximately$1,700 from
four Ontario physicians for extra -
billing charges to patients, Health
Minister Murray Elston announced
recently.
Action has been taken against these
four docctors because the ministry
considers certain of their billing prac-
tices to be clearly in contravention of
the Health Care Accessibility Act
which was passed June 20, 1986.
The patients who were extra -billed
in these cases have been reimbursed
by OHIP, and O111P has now
deducted an equivalent amount) plus
a $50 administration charge for each
instance of extra -billing) from monies
payable by the plan to the four physi-
cians. Th administration charge is
provided for under Section 4 of the
act.
"We will continue to reyiew com-
plaints from patients abourt extra -
billing," Elston said. "And we will
take further action when
appropriate."
The names of the individual doctors
will be withheld to protect patient
confidentiality.
