Hockey season quickly closing, ice out of Rec Centre
• The hockey season in this area isquickly coming to a close.
The ice will be removed from the South Huron Rec Centre this week
in preparation for the upcoming home and garden show.
The season for the Mohawks and Hawks ended rather abrupt-
ly. Both clubs breezed their first round of playoffs and had good
shots at league championships.
We would like to pass on congratulations to both teams. They
provided local fans with a lot of exciting and entertaining hockey.
A number of new faces will be among the 1987-88 Mohawks.
First of all coach Jack Chipchase has indicated he would not be
back behind the bench. Chipper has contributed a lot to the team
with his wide experience in amateur and professional ranks.
We know of at least one new player who will certainly be a
big help on the ice. This year's captain of the St. Marys Lincolns,
Jeff Shipley of Lucan told us he would likely join the local senior
'13' club. Shipley along with another Lucan native, Lester Arts was
on the Ontario junior all star team, winners of silver medals at
the recent Canada Winter Games. Arts has one year of junior
eligibility left.
Many of this year's junior Hawks are expected back next
season and coach Dave Bogart said he is confident of the club's
future.
The Hawks went from five wins a year ago to one of the six
top teams in the province this season. Quite a reversal!. __.
The Lucan Irish are the only team still in the running for pro -
is off to a great start. The four year-old pacer won his third straight
race of the new year Saturday night by beating a strong field in
the first leg of the Graduate Series at The Meadowlands in New
Jersey.
The Parkhill pacer with Ailsa .Craig native John Campbell in
the sulky won Saturday's event in a fast 1.5.3.3. The other leg was
won by Awesome Almahurst in one tick faster so Quite A Sensa-
tion will have lots of competition to win this series.

John Campbell's win Saturday night was his 18th of the week
for a total of 50 for the month of March. The 18 wins in a week sets
a new record at The Meadowlands.

bounced back on home ice Saturday

After Saturday's win Irish coach Ed
Parkinson said. "That was a little bet-
ter. We were able to hold on to our
lead this time. They have a better
team than some give them -credit for.
They never give up and are able to
score goals in bunches."
Penalties play a big part
Penalties were responsible for
seven of the goals scored in Satur-
day's 9-6 win for the Irish at home.
But most of these goals didn't come
as one would expect. The reverse.
happened.
The game was only 17 seconds old
when Irish captain Rob Thirlwall was
sent off for tripping. While he was off
Brad Muir stole the puck from the
Brussels attackers and scored an
unassisted goal.
At the eight minute mark the Bulls
did take advantage of a power play as

Exeter Waxers as they dropped a 6-0
decision to St. Marys in a round rob-
ing Ontario Minor Hockey Association
novice playoff game.
The Waxers finished third in the
seven team playoff completing a 33

The first paragraph in the evaluation of the Jays says, "Toron-
to has baseball's best outfield, one of the game's top shortstops,
three successful starting pitchers, an awesome one-two punch in
short relief, excellent defence, power, speed, veterans in their
prime, youth in the wings and - well, what else is there."
Each of the three regular outfilders hit home runs in Satur-
day's exhibition win over the Chicago White Sox. Jesse Barfield
is off to a flying start. In Toronto's first 16•games and Barfield pro-
bably didn't play in all, he had 6'home runs and 15 runs batted in.
Project those figures over 162 games and you get 60 homers and
150 rbi's.
The good news for Ontario fans is this springs efforts by Rob
Ducey of Cambridge. He is expected to come north and become
only the second Canadian to make the team. TPI other was Dave
McKay from British Columbia.
Manager Jimy Williams will have plenty of headaches before
he cuts the roster to 24 for Monday's opener at Exhibition Stadium.
With one of the best farm systems in the business, the Jays have
many youngsters who have the ability to stay up, but many will
be farmed out.
Two expected to remain besides Ducey are first baseman Fred
McGriff and second sacker Mike Sharperson. To date McGriff has
five round trippers and 11 runs batted in.
In recent weeks the others we have heard predicting the Jays
.to lead their division were American league umpires Derwood Mer-
rill and Rocky Roe and Don Mattingly of the Yankees.
According to recent statistics, the Boston Red Sox will finish
fourth or fifth this season. That's what's happened to the last five
A L East champions. If the Cleveland Indians would win this time
_around it would mean six -different champions in the same number.
-of years.- - - .
The Red Sox have the second best spring lrainillg i'ectwd -in
the American league despite the absence of catcher Rick Gedman
and Roger Clements. The Detroit Tigers are at the bottom of the
-14 teams. One of the few bright spots -for -manager Sparky Ander-
son is the return to five form by pitcher Don Petry.
The abundance of young players in the Toronto system was
one- reason Ron Shepherd was given .his release. He was
quickly grabbed by the Montreal Expos. If he makes the Expos
they could -]rave an alt ex -Blue Jays outfield along with Mitch
Webster and Dave Collins. •

one goal again at 11:04 as Todd Hut-
ton beat Paul Woolford in the Lucan

to get back the lead.. This time it was
