Two Exeter ringette teams win titles
Two Exeter ringette teams were
successful in winning Huron -Perth
Ringette Association championship
this week.
The winners were the petites coach-
ed by Michelle Riehl, Allan Hodgert
and Doug Miners and the tweens
handled by George Tryon, Linda Far-
quhar and Bob Coates.
A week off for the recent spring
break proved beneficial for the Ex-
eter netite ringette team as they won
with two straight vic tories over Sea
forth.
They warmed up for the champion-
ship series by defeating the Hensall
boys atom team by a score of 4-3.
After losing the first game of the
best -of -three final a week earlier the
petites came through with a must 6-3
win Wednesday and completed their
comeback effotts with a 5-4 overtime
victory Saturday in Seaforth.
The stars for the Exeter club in
Wednesday's series tying win were
goalie Jana Webster and high scoring
forward Cheyenne Westlake. Webster
turned in an outstanding performance
in the Exeter goal and Westlake
scored five of her club's six goals.
The first Exeter goal was
registered by Cara Gardner on a pass
from Jill Sararas.
Credited with assists on the goals
by Cheyenne Westlake were Christie
Bedard, Andrea Urlin, Katie Arm-
strong, Cara Gardner, Carrie Simp-
son and Suzanne Steciuk. '
As on previous games, all Seaforth
goals were scored by the McIlwain
sisters.
In Saturday's deciding contest,
Seaforth took a 2-1 first period lead.
The Exeter goal was chalked up by
Jill Sararas.
Early in the final period, Seaforth
went ahead, but, the locals bounced
back with a goal by Lisa Forrest and
the two teams went into overtime.
The Exeter fans had a chance to
cheer as Cheyenne Westlake scored
at 4:21 of sudden -death overtime.
Assisting were Christie Bedard and
Lisa Forrest.
In the win over the Hensall boys,
Lisa Forrest led the petite scoring
with two successful shots while
singles were fired by Cheyenne
Westlake and Jill Sararas. Getting
assists were Westlake, Janice
Sanders and Cara Gardner.
The goals for Hensall were notch-
ed by Shane Pepper, Shawn Lovell
and Greg Dalrymple. Brian Gardner
and Shane Pepper picked up assists.
On conclusion of a very successful
season, the petite players and
management would like to thank the
Exeter Optimist club for their
sponsorship.
The Exeter Tweens won the Huron -
Perth Ringette Association cham-
pionship Thursday night as they
downed Seaforth 8-5 at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
The win came in the third game of
the best -of -three series.
The second and final period prov-
ed to be the successful one for the Ex-
eter team. They took to the ice for the
final 20 minutes of play trailing
Seaforth 4.3. --
Julia Merner who was the scoring
star for the winners fired the first two
-goals of the game at 10:09 and 15:36
of the opening session. One came on
an unassisted effort and the other on
a pass from Becky Morgan.
The third first period marker for
the Exeter clubs was fired by Becci
Farquhar on a three-way passing
combination with Jayne Rowe and
Becky Morgan.
For Seaforth Tracy Fortune scored
two of their first scores and the others
were notched by Lisa Henderson and
Jill Betties.
In the second period, Giselle Char-
rette converted a pass form Bryden
Gryseels to tie the score at 4-4 at 8:29.
Less than a minute later, Lisa
Henderson put Seaforth back in front.
This lead didn't last long as Julia
Merner started her four goal scoring
rampage. The first of the quartet of
Merner scores was set up by Becci
Farquhar while Bryden Gryseels and
Elizabeth Coates assisted on the se-
cond.
The next Merner goal was
unassisted and on the fourth the assist
was provided by Giselle Charrette.
The championship team is coached
by George Tryon, Bob Coates and
Linda Farquhir and the trainer is
Gerry Hhiel. Other members of the
team in addition to those mentioned
in the scoring summary are goalie
Tiffany Tryon, Tonya Rhiel, Sarah
Kerslake, Laura Cook. Janel Papple,
Barb Mortley, Chris Chapel, Julia
Webster, and Carrie Lovie.
The Huron -Perth championship
trophy was presented to captains
Julia Merner and Jayne Rowe by
league convener Daryl Seigner of
Mitchell.
The tweens also participated in the
weekend Western Ontario regional
ringette tournament in Stratford and
were runnersup for the bronze
championship.
The Exeter victories were 3-2 over
Seaforth and 4-3 over Lambeth. The
losses were 9-7 to_Stratford, 10-5 to
Belmont and 7 -2 -to a London club in
the bronze medal final.
In the first game loss to Stratford,
Julia Mercier and Bryden Gryseels
led the Exeter scoring with two goals
each. Scoring in single fashion were
Becci Farquhar, Giselle Charrette
and Carrie Lovie.
Julia Merner with a goal and two
assists was best in the 3-2 win over
Seaforth. Other goal scorers were
Becci Farquhar and Carrie Lovie
while Becky Morgan gained an assist.
Against Lambeth, Merner fired two
successful shots and single goals were
notched by Morgan and Farquhar.
In the hiss to Belmont, Giselle Char-
rette and Becky Morgan scored two
goals apiece and the single came
from Julia Merner.
Julia Merner with two goals on
passes from Becci Farquhar and
Becky Morgan accounted for the Ex-
eter scoring in the final loss to
Stratford.
