Huron County ilealth Unit Germs and viruses are now a much less frequent cause of death, thanks to the progress of medical science. Today, the diseases we have and die from have much more to do with the way we live. Cardiovascular or heart andblood vessel disease is primarily a lifestyle disease. Death.from heart attack is the largest single cause of mortality in Canada. Of course heart disease can't be blamed solely on bad habits. It's known, for instance. that the likelihood of a person developing heart disease is greater if there's a family history. This doesn't mean that because others in your family have had heart attacks so. inevitably. will you. But if you know that there is a history of heart disease in your family, you should be extra careful to reduce your chances of having a heart attack by working towards a healthier lifestyle and having regular medical check-ups. You can reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease by practicing some simple health habits daily. Watch your diet - Choose a' variety of foods from each of the four food groups to ensure that your diet in- cludes all the essential nutients. Reduce your intake of foods high in fat, especially saturated fat and salt. Choose lean meat. chicken without the skin, or fish rather than heavily GROUP RETURNING They're ng hack! The Ontario Christian \tusk Assembly. one of On- tario's largest musical gruops, will be giving their fourth concert in the Ex- eter United Church on Sunday, April 25. During the past 25 years this well known group of excellent performers has delighted many audiences in Canada, the US and Europe with their enthusiasm and professionalism. Their Grand Concert in the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto last October was a fabulous success. Limit the amount of table fat ( butter. margarine, salad dressing) you cat and use low fat dairy products -like 2 _ percent or skim milk, cottage Ghees.. and yogart. Achieving and maintain- ing your ideal weight is.also impor ,tant! if you have extra weight to lose. remember that successful weight loss .depends on a long term effort em- phasizing sensible eating habits and regular exercise. "Fad" diets don't work over a long period of time. Any weight loss experienced initially is usually regained within a few week, or months. Exercise...it's good for you • Go ahead! Del whatever exercise you like to do, but do it four or live times a week for at least 20 minutes each time. If you like to jog, then jog. 1f you like walking. then walk. It's impor- tant to choose an activity that you en- joy doing and will continue to par- - ticipate in for a long period of time. Regular exercise makes you feel bet- ter. helps to burn up calories. and may help to reduce the levels of fat in the blood stream. Motion exercises that use the large muscle groups of your arms and legs such as biking. walking or cross country skiing will improve your' cardiovascular en- durance if done at an intensity that makes your heart work within your Target Heart Rate Zone (upper limit 200 minus your age: lower limit 170 minus your age). Stop smoking - Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoking can injure blood vessel walls and speed up hardening of the arteries. Chain smoking significantly speeds the pulse rate. in- creases the work of the heart. and raises the blood pressure. Using filtered cigarettes may decrease some of the risks for chronic lung diseases. but does not minimize the dangers of cardiovascular disease. it's interesting to note that the risk of a heart attack.for a person who once smoked. but who. has stopped. is almost the same as it is for a person who has never smoked! Develop effective stress manage- ment techniques - Handled well, stress keeps us alert and stimulated. It's good for us. But a highly pressured, driven style of behaviour is recognized as a contributing factor in.heart disease. The secret is to learn to recognize the stress reaction in yourself and to short circuit the response through effective coping techniques such as exercise, relaxa- tion. positive thinking,. participation in hobbies. and anything else that lets you handle the pressures you en- counter daily.
