Mohawks title hopes dashed
The 1986-87 season for the Exeter
Mohawks ended abruptly this week as
they suffered three straight defeats at
the hands of the Tavistock Royals.
After leading the OHA Central
Senior 'B' league final three games to.
one, the Mohawks came close to
wrapping up the series on home ice,
Wednesday. They went into a second
overtime period before losing 4-3.
Then it was off to Tavistock Satur-
day night where the Royals prevail-
ed 5-3. In the seventh and deciding
game at the South Huron Rec Centre
before the largest crowd of the season
of 816 Sunday night, Tavistock won by
an identical 5-3 score to advance to
the OHA semi-finals.
The Royals will be in Grand Valley
Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. to meet
the Harvesters in the first game of a
best -of -seven series.
The winner of this series meets the
winner of the other semi-final series
between Mooretown and Alvinston for
the all -Ontario Senior 'B' champion-
ship. At the moment Mooretown leads
one game to none.
Despite the Toss to Tavistock, the
Mohawks enjoyed a very successful
season and suffered only eight
tosses.The important factor is that
five of these defeats wereat the hands
of the Royals.
After the game coach Jack Chip -
chase of the Mohawks said, "We had

a good season. You Can't take
anything away from Tavistock. They
have a good club and especially in the
last three games were hungrier and
played more aggressively than we
did."
Chipchase who announced early in
the season that he Would not be back
next year added, "They had the big
boys who were able to bump and
grind in the corners."
About his retirement from
coaching, Chipchase said "I have
been back in Exeter for 11 years now
and eight of those have been with the
Mohawks. It's tiroe to get new blood
with different faces and probably dif-
ferent styles of play. Now I will enjoy
being a spectator and my only on ice
action will be with the Exeter Molting
Hawks oldtimers."
Manager Doc Campbell reiterated
Chipchase's comments about the
Tavistock team saying, "They were
full credit for the wins and their
strong play along the boards and in
the corners paid off."
Campbell indicating he would be
back as manager for the 1987-88 add-
ed, "We had a good year finishing on
top in the regular schedule. I would
like to thank our sponsors and our
wonderful fans for their great sup-
gor ."_Fwing Sunda–TS—seventh

vener Bill Rowe presented the cham-
pionship trophy to Tavistock captain

day's game in overtime protested a
call at 11:48 of the second period when
referee Lee Richards assessed a two
minute penalty when a Tavistock
player threw ,his stick.
The protest which was rejected by
OHA officials Friday night suggested
a five minute penalty should have
been called. The committee ruled the
infraction did not warrant a distinct
advantage. ,
