Farm chemical danger
outlined at conference
The dangers associated with the
handling of agricultural chemicals
was one of the featured topics at the
recent Farm Safety Association's la
annual conference held in 'Toronto.
Mike Smith of Mercy hospital
Medical ('entre in Des Moines, Iowa,
outlined some of the difficulties en-
countered in treating victims to tox-
ic farm chemicals.
Jo: on Mandlowitz, Director of the
Office of the Employer Adviser in
Toronto, outlined the work of his of-
fice in assisting farm employei's to
better understand the Workers' Com-
pensation Act and their rights under
it. Ile outlined some of the problems
encountered by employers with com-
pensation claims and how his office
has assisted.
The one day conference also includ-
ed a number of other speakers in-
cluding a presentation on First Ai(1
Training by Gord Jefferson of St.
John Ambulance. Dr. John Friel oI
the Defence and Civil Institute of En-
viro►nental Medicine, 'Toronto, ad-
dressed the delegates on the Effects
of Heat and cold on the Human Body.
Ken Kelly, a farmer from Paisley.
recounted a farm accident involving
a P.'I'O. in which he lost an arm. Ilis
graphic account of the accident and
how it could have been prevented
moved the :350 delegates who heard
hint.
Robert Goulet, a Kent County
farmer, was re-elected president of
the Farm Safety Association for 1987.
Renie Long of London was re-elected
vice-president. Anton Wytenburg o
Richmond, Allen Diefenbacher -
h'loradale and George Underwood of
%%Ingham were elected to the Associa-
tion's five member executive
committee.
This year the Farm Safety Associa-
tion presented merit awards tathrec
companies who have made outstan-
ding contributions to the promotion oI
health and safety In the agricultural
industry.
Cyanamid Canada Inc. put together
the Pesticide Safety Action Kit'. com-
posed of all the necessary protective
gear needed to handle most pesticides
and made it readily available to the
farming community at a low cost.
During the first year that the kit was
of fered, over 5,000 were sold.
Pioneer 111 -Bred Limited of
Chatham had recognized the need for
shaking children in the rural com-
munity aware of the "many hazards
associated with farming through the
production and distribution of the of
the safety storybook 'Watch Out'
says Kerbie. The 50,00( copies of the
book published this winter were all
distrubte(1 by written request and in-
terest is still high.
