Tavistock Saturday night doing some

Rick Pikul...a Mohawk star
The stars of the weekend for the
Mohawks were goalie Rick Pikul and
right winger Rick Hart. Pikul gave up
only one goal in each game and was
instrumental in keeping his club in
contention. Hart was in on all five
goals for the Exeter club. He scored
three times and added two assists.
Both teams now have back-up
goaltenders from other clubs. Ray
Brownlee from the Harriston Blues is
subbing for Louie Arts of the
Mohawks who is out for the season
and Tom Boehler of New Hamburg is
the backup for Tavistock since Larry
McKay was injured in the second
game of this series.
Injuries continue to haunt the
Mohawks. Along with Arts, Cam Doig
is out for the year; Brian Mercer back
Friday from a wrist injury, hurt a
knee and missed Saturday's game
and Scott Eccles is playing with a lot
of pain. Defenceman Steve Nelson is
expected to be out for another week.
Ross Yantzi of Tavistock received a
broken.nose and slight concussion in
Friday's game.
To add to the Mohawk problems
Barry Baynham left Sunday for two
weeks in Florida. Pat Cyr missed the
last two games because of a skiing
trip to Western Canada. He is ex-
pected back this weekend.

Tavistock was up for grabs until the
late minutes of the third period.

scoreboard. Defenceman Paul
Kalbfleisch completed a three-way
passing combination with Mike Booth
and Dave Frey at 5:59 of the first
period while John Jongeneel of the.

in Friday's 2-1 victory for the
Mohawks, they didn't face as many
shots as the next night. The Exeter
club outshot the opposition by 29 shots
to 23.

Hawks lose two tough overtime games,
not many shoulders left- to putto wheel
After suffering back-to-back heart-
break overtime losses, the Exeter
Hawks find themselves on the -brink
of elimination in their northern divi-
sion final against the Brussels Bulls.
All the cliches covering do or die
situations will apply when thelocals
skate on to the ice tonight (Wcdnes-.
day) in Brussels, trailing the series
3-1.
Among the cliches applicable is the
one calling on the team members to
put their collective shoulders to the
wheel. Therein may lie one of their
greatest obstacles in that they have
few good shoulders left.
The Hawks lost leading scorer
George Pratt with a shoulder separa-
tion in game one and veteran Scott
Bogart was also sidelined then when
he aggravated a collarbone injury
that had occurred earlier in the
season.
Sunday night, defensive stalwart
Dale Timmermans went to the dress-
ing room with what was feared a
separated shoulder. He returned
later, but saw only a couple of shifts
in the third period and overtime.
Jon O'Connor also skated off in the
overtime favoring a shoulder that he
had injured late in the season.
The Hawks knotted the series at a
game each with a 5-3 win at the rec
centre on Wednesday, but then came
the two overtime losses by identical
3-2 scores to put their backs to the
wall.
If they do manage a win in
Brussels, tonight, sixth game in the
series will be, at the rec centre on
Friday.
Win game two
Two' goals within 47 seconds just
after the midway mark of the third
period carried the Hawks to their lone
win in the series at thereccentre on
Wednesday.
They led 3-2 heading into the third
'atter coming from behind a 1-0 first
period deficit, but the Bulls pulled
even at the 6:25 mark of the final stan-
za when Marty Rutledge scored his
second marker of the game.
Jeff Reid scored the eventual win-
ner at the 11:12 mark on a play with
Jim Lewis and Jon O'Connor and then
Sean Whiteford came right back with
the insurance marker with Steve
Gould and Steve McIntyre picking up
the assists.
O'Connor paced the scoring parade
with two markers, one on a
powerplay, and Jeff Dalrymple not-
ched the other.
Reid and Lewis had two assists
each and singles were recorded by
Jim Dickens, Whiteford, O'Connor,
Gould and McIntyre.
• ' CELEBRATION• Exeter -Hawks Steve Gould (7) celebrates .hisse-
cond goal of the game on Sunday that sent the contest into two
periods of overtime. Moving in to congratulate him are defencemen
Steve Batten and Dean Schram.
Dave Rook won the netminding hat-
tle was he kicked out 27 shots and Pat
Chambers had 28 saves for the Bulls.
The Hawks had 10 of the 17
penalties called.
Top effort unrewarded
The Hawks played one of their best
games in Brussels on Friday, but
couldn't find the range on several
good scoring plays as they eventual-
ly went down to defeat in the first
overtime session.
The locals were particularly domi-
nant in the second period when most
of the play was in the Brussels zone,
but poor shooting and some solid net -
minding by Jeff McGavin kept them
at bay.
Exeter took a 1-0 lead early in the
second when Steve Batten found the
range on a powerplay with Steve
Gould and Dean Schram drawing the
assists.
Brussels then came back with two
markers in the third but the Hawks
knotted the count with just under a
minute and a half left in the stanza
when .teff Reid beat McGavin on a
play with Gould.
The overtime session was only 23
seconds underway when captain Tim
Fritz scored his second of the game
to settle the issue as the Bulls controll-
ed the play from the opening faceoff
and scooted around the defence to
beat Dave Rook.
The Hawks hit two goal posts in the
extra session, but that was as close as
they could come.
McGavin ended up with 43 saves,
while Rook had 36.
The Bulls sat out 13 of the 25
penalties called. The list included
fighting majors and game miscon-
ducts to Jeff Dalrymple and Marty
Rutle e late in the first period.
Lose "must" game
Coat ' Dave Bogart fingered Sun-
day's home game as a "must win"
situation for the Hawks and they had
their chance in a game that could •
have gone either way.
The locals came out flat in the first
period and fell behind 2-0.
Steve Gould got one of those back
on an unassisted effort at the 1:48
mark of the middle frame and he then •
teamed up with Dean Schram and
Steve McIntyre to get the equalizer

Play was even through the
scoreless 10 -minute overtime session
but the Bulls dominated the sudden -
death period and were finally reward-
ed at the 6:14 mark when Kevin
McArter rammed home the winner.
McArter picked up the puck from
a point shot by a team mate and mov-
ed to the side of the net before Rook
could get back in position and flipped
a shot into the top corner.
Rook finished the game with 34
saves. while McGavin had 22. The
Bulls out -shot the Hawks 17-11 in the
two overtime sessions as the home
crew appeared to start running out of
steam .
