us closer to God. Traditionally people
of Paul's time felt it was through
works - by carefully following the let-
ter of the Law of Moses. People
became more and more concerned
with interpreting the words of the
Law than in tollowing the spirit of the
Law.
If we can get closer to God through
works, Paul tells us, then we hold our
own' fate in our own hand. But if we
get closer to God without having to
buy our way into the kingdom, as
Jesus tells us through his life, then it
is all God's doing that allows us into
his presence.
In other words, God grants us a
special place in his club - his kingdom
- through his faith in us and his call
for us to have faith in him. God does
not close people out of his kingdom by
prejudging us - if we have faith we
have already an established relation-
ship with God and his Son our
Saviour.
