It's playoff time again with plenty of action
The month of March usually brings a- Targe diet of playoff
hockey and this year is certainly no exception in this area with
three teams in the thick of contention.
On the Senior 'B' front, the Exeter Mohawks are currently
engaged with the Tavistock Royals in a battle to retain their league
championship of a year ago although the category is a little
different. '
The Mohawks after disposing of the New Hamburg Towers in
four straight gatnes in the first round ran into a cropper Sunday
night at home as they lost 4-2 to the Tavistock club. -
The second game of the best -of -seven series was played last
night, Tuesday in'Tavistock with the third game set for the South
Huron Rec Centre Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
The fourth contest is back in Tavistock territory Saturday night
with a fifth game if necessary and we -feel it certainly will be on
Wednesday, March 18. Any further games would be in Tavistock,
Saturday, March 21 and the seventh and deciding game in Exeter
-the following night.
• The Mohawks enjoyed a very successful season and their first
loss to Tavistock came after an almost two week layoff while the
Royals had just come off a close series with Hillsburg.
Injuries have been prevalent with the club in recent weeks.
Goalie Louis Arts and speedy forward -Cant Doig are out for the
season and Brian Mercer and Steve Nelson will each be out for
a couple of more games yet.
Manager Doc Campbell tells us that the Mohawks have obtain-
ed the services of goalie Ray Brownlee from the Harriston Blues
to backup regular netminder Rick Pikul.
Brownlee can be carried by the Mohawks only as long as the
junior Llawks are still in the playoff hunt. After that one of the
junior goalies must fill the second spot.
Campbell provided a list of three available goalies to the OHA
and president Brent Ladds and league convener Bill Rowe decid-
ed Brownlee would .be the Candidate. •
• Lots of playoff action remains on the junior 'D' front as the
Exeter Ilawks and Lucan Irish are each in their final rounds.
The Ilawks came up with strong efforts to eliminate Seaforth
in four straight games, but, dropped the first game of .the finals
Sunday to the Brussels Bulls by a score of 3-0.
'['he Hawks not only lost the first game, but, three players will

In Robs Haugh
be out for al least a couple of games. They are George Pratt, Scott
Bogart and Scott Lovie. The first two are on the. injury-- list. and
Lovie received a suspension in Sunday's contest.
Coach Dave Bogart of the Hawks has been getting excellent
goal tending from Dave Rook and Derek Switzer and this has con-
tributed greatly to the playoff- success to date.
The second -game of the series against Brussels goes at the
South Iluron Rec Centre tonight, Wednesday .and after a game in
Brussels Friday the two clubs will be back in town for the fourth
contest, Sunday night.
At the same time the Lucan Irish are in the final round of the
junior 'D' south divisions and .they are faring very well.
Urbshott leads scoring
After winning the first two games, the Irish entertained
Thamesford last night Tuesday in Lucan. The fourth game goes
Friday in Thamesford with further games if necessary in Lucan
March 17, Thamesford March 20 and March 23 back in Lucan.
One of the top scorers during the season for the Irish has been
on a scoring roll in the first two games of the finals. Wayne Urb-
shott scored two goals and added one assist in the first tilt and in
the second rattled in three goals and helped his mates set up two
other scores.
Want to play volleyball?
A co-ed volleyball tournament is being planned at the South
Huron Rec Centre for Saturday, March 21. Minimum number of
players for each team is three women and three men.
Anyone interested in entering a team should contact Carl
Nickles at 228-6175. .
At the same time Nickles is looking for prospective new
players for the Huron Park Stingers, a ladies fastball team. Con-
tact may be made at the same number.
Mason does it again -
We had the privilege to watch the last few minutes of the CCAA
hockey finals from the Joe Louis arena in Detroit Saturday night.
The Michigan State Spartans coached by Ron Mason won the
championship for the fifth time in six.years. The Spartans edged
Bowling Green in overtime.
Mason who played junior hockey in Seaforth and was one of
the originators of the Huron Hockey School has been at Michigan
State for seven years after successful coaching careers at Bowl-
ing Green and Lake Superior State.
Saturday's win was Mason's 218th at East Lansing and 507
overall in his American college coaching career. Keep going, Iton.
Irish take two steps towards south title
The Lucan Irish have taken a conn-
manding-lead-in-their bid to win -the
O11A Western Junior •'D' southern
group championship.
After disposing of the Mount
Brydges Bulldogs, the Irish defeated
the Thamesford Trojans 6-2 in Lucan
Wednesday and came back with an.
8-6 victory Friday in Thamesford. :
The third game of the best -of -seven
series was played last night, Tuesday
in Lucan. The fourth contest goes Fri-
day in Thamesford. If further games
are necessary they are set for Lucan
March 17, Thamesford March 20 and
Lucan March 23. -
The winner of this series goes on to
meet either the -Brussels -Bulls -oto Ex-
eter Hawks in semi-final play for the
all -Ontario championship. •
'in the first ganne of the series the
Irish started slowly as they fell behind
2-1 after the first 20 minutes:of play.
Matt Vegh and Quinn- McKnight
scored. for Thamesford and Scott
Denomy replied for Lucan on a pass
from Warne Urbshott.
Three unanswered goads in the mid-
dle frame put the Irish ahead to stay.
Denomy's second goal of.thenight
with Bob Thirlwall assisting tied the
score at 8:52 and four minutes later
Grant Larsen notched what proved to
be the winner -on passes -from -Brad
Muir and Denomy.-
Near the end of the period Wayne
Urbshott converted a pass from Joe
F'ebrey to put his club ahead 4-2.
In the final session. Urbshott hit
Thamesford again this lime with Rob
Clardy assisting and Hardy completed
the scoring on passes produced by
Brad Muir and Paul DePlancke.
From behind again
in Thamesford Friday the Irish
were forced to overcome another
deficit. This time it was larger as they
fell behind 4-0 by the second minute
