with a number of key saves.

doubled the Exeter output of shots on
goal.
After two periods of play the Royals
had outshot the Mohawks by 19 to nine
and in the final frame it was nine to
• six.
Near the halfway mark of the first
period, Tavistock broke out with two

The Exeter Hawks were literally
and figuratively "collared" by the
Brussels Bulls in the opening game of
their best -of -seven northern division
final on Sunday.
Jeff McGavin hung a shut -out col-
lar on the locals as he backstopped the
loop winners to a 3-0 victory.
The loss.was extremely.costty<.fotir
the Hawks as two stalwarts will be in
special collars and probably watching
from the sidelines for the balance of
the series.
George Pratt, who was one of the
team's top scorers in the past few
weeks, went out of the game early in
the first period with a.separated
shoulder.
Midway through the second. Scott
Bogart followed him to the dressing
room with a badly bruised collarbone.
Bogart was just rounding into shape
after suffering a similar injury before
Christmas. He would get batck in the
series if it goes_ long enough.
The Hawks also lost Scott Lovie
when he picked up a match penalty
with only five seconds left in the game
when he was fingered for spitting by
referee Gary Gravett. He'll probably
miss the next three games.

In the opener, McGavin collared the
Hawks for the second time this season
as he was unbeatable in the nets for
the Bulls, although he was also aided
by some poor shooting on the part of
the Hawks.
The teams came out hitting in the
first period and both had nine men
seneto the penalty box. but neither
could connect on powerplay
opportunities.
The Bulls finally beat Derek
Switzer at the 9:45 mark of the initial
stanza with Kevin McArter being the
triggerman. ,
Soft, wet ice plagued the Hawks in
the opening minute of the second
period. After they ran into trouble
with the puck suddenly stopping on
the ice, Gravett called a brief delay
in the action to allow the playing sur-
face to dry off.
However, on the first play after the
faceoff, defenceman Steve Batten had
the puck stick on the ice just outside
his blueline and McArter jumped on
it to go in alone on Switzer. The lat-
ter made the initial save, but McArter
picked up his own rebound and found
the range before the Hawks could get
back to cover up.
The Bulls scored their final marker
near the midway mark of the third
when the Hawks were pressing on a
powerplay. Rob Cardiff picked up the
disc and scored on the short-handed
effort to pull the game out of reach.
The Hawks ended up with 18
penalties, one more than the Bulls.
The total included fighting majors
and -game -misconduct% to S n
Whiteford and the Bulls Bill Haines fit
the third.
Switzer, who was only over-
shadowed slightly by McGavin, kick-
ed out 33 shots for the Itawks and kept
them in the game in the first period
when he faced 17 and allowed only one
to get past him.
McGavin ended up with 27 saves in
his shut -out performance.
Oust ('entenniares
The Hawks completed their sweep
over the defending OHA chiimpion
Centennaires on the latter's ice, Tues-
day, when they scored five times in
the final period to post a 7-5 triumph.
Three of those goals came in the
last minute and 13 seconds when it ap-
peared that the Seaforth crew would
extend the series.
After jumping into a quick lead in
the first minute of. the game, the
Hawks trailed by a 2-1 margin at the
end of one, and were still behind by
one at the end of two as the teams-.
traded single tallies in the middle
frame.
George Pratt scored for the locals
in the first and Steve Gould dented the
twine in the second on a play with
Pratt.
Gould notched his second of the
game to pull the teams even at 3-3 at
the 2:50 mark of the third period with
Pratt and Sean Whiteford picking up
the assists. -
•
Seaforth then took another one -goal
margin only to have Pratt even things
up at the 7:58 mark when he finished
off a play with Whiteford and Dale
Timmermans.
The home team then added their
fourth straight powerplay goal at the
11:50 mark and held that 5-4 advan-.
tage until there was only 73 seconds
left when Scott Bogart found the
range with Dean Schram and Pratt
picking up the assists.
The Hawks went right back ontdthe
attack and 23 seconds later Whiteford
scored the winner on a play with
Gould and Pratt.
An Exeter penalty with 30 seconds
remaining gave Seaforth two extra
attackers as they pulled their goalie
to get the equalizer, but Gould hit the
open net with four seconds left to get
the clincher and advance the Hawks.
Schram and Pratt assisted on the
play.
The Hawks sat out 15 of the 26
minors called and gave up four
powerplay markers.
Derek Switzer. who is unbeaten in
his last 10 games between the pipes
for the locals, recorded 45 saves to
play an instrumental part in the win.
He was particularly effective in the
first when Seaforth fired 22 shots at
him and again in the third when they
had 18.
• Derek Cooper had•38 saves for the
Centennaires in their final game of
the season.
BIG STOP - Derek Switzer was a.busy man as the Exeter Hawks
lost their northern division playoff opener to Brussels on Sunday. Here
he kicks out a shot from Mike Chapman while referee Gary Gravett

tourney goes in Parkhill
For the third time since 1979. North
Middlesex District High School in
Parkhill is playing host to the Oi'SSA
'A' baSkethall championships March
11-13. With representatives from all
parts of the province attending. there
will he Tots of action beginning
Wednesday afternoon and running
through Friday evening.
The Marauders of Parkhill. with
home court advantage, should be
very competetive in this tournament.
In six exhibitjongames against 'AAA'
and 'AA'schools, the wine and white
lost only once. dropping an 86-69 deci-
sion to. London Beal Raiders. the
number five ranked 'AAA' team in
the province. Several other teams
bring equally impressive records to
OFSSA, a fact which should result in
some particularly close games in the
early rounds.
When asked why Parkhill is play-
ing host a third time in so few years,
xxx
tournament director Jim Allen noted
that. white North Middlesex is a small
school. 400 students. it has a very
large proportion of energetic and
dedicated people who enjoy a
challenge of this nature.
Nearly seven months in planning.
most of the work has been done by
students under the guidance of
teachers. Al the heart of this plann-
ing are Allen's two co-ed physical
education classes which have taken
on the work as part- of a unit on leader-
ship and administration. Allen feels
that these students have learned more
from planning this tournament than
a year of classroom work could teach
them. -
So it's basketball levet at Parkhill
as the last minute details are finaliz-
. ed for the three-day event. The tour-
nament winds up Friday evening with
the consolation game at 4 p.m. and
