Canada wide Fitness Week planned for late May
Here is plenty of notice that the week of May 22 to 31, 1987 has
been designated as Canada's Fitweek by Fitness Canada, all pro-
vincial governments and 26 national organizations.
In a press release we received this week are outlined various
activities for all ages including an elderobic moonwalk-for Cana-
dian seniors which would include this writer.
We would hope the senior groups in this area will get in on the
week and come up with some unique ideas to promote the elderobic
moonwalk.
The elderobic moonwalk isfrom start to finish an exercise
imagination. It could be in the form of a dance by the light of the
moon or a picnic where one's eating habits could be -exercised.
Suggestions for the week include a participation challenge with
municipal officials taking part. A similar event was held last sum-
mer at the South Huron Rec Centre and this will be repeated.
Rec director Lynne Farquhar reports that tentative plans in-
clude a competition on Wednesday, May V against the residents
of Ilanover with special emphasis on Mayor Bruce Shaw outdoing
his counterpart in Ilanover.
Lynne says she hopes to organize a full day'of activities which
would include a giant:aerobic class with elementary schools in the
area participating.
Sounds like lots of fun, so get out your sneakers and skipping
rope to get in shape for the big week.
Question time
Here comes three fairly simple questions on what's happened
in the first three-quarter of'the 1986-87 season in the Natiohal
Hockey League.
Come -from -behind in third game
Name the team that has turned their fortunes around from a
year ago, the club that is leading in home attendance and the team
that has a great chance in having their coach named the coach
of the year.
it only takes one team to answer those questions. The Detroit
Red Wings out in the cold when playoff time came around last year
are in first pace in the Norris division and are almost a shoo-in
to make post -season action.
The success of the Red Wings is certainly reflected at the turn -

stiles at Joe Louis arena. Their latest tome -game Saturday after-
noon against the New York Rangers attracted 19,615 fans, the
largest crowd of the season. The.average crowd for the entire
schedule should be about 18,000.
.Their support proves that most cities will back a winner. The
Red Wings may not be a winner, but they are so much of an im-
provement over past years that their fans at least have a hope.
The reason for the big switch for the Wings has to be coach
.Jaques Demers. it' he isn't named the coach of the year, then the
sanity Of all voters should be questioned. •
- • 'l'he Wings don't play a very exciting brand of hockey, but they
get the job done -with a close checking, grinding brand of play and
have reduced their goals against by a tremendous number.
Although they are 10th in overall point standing, the Wings
have only scored 207 goals in their first 63 games. Only the Quebec
Nordiques with 205 goals in 64 games have fewer scores than
Detroit.
On the other side of the ledger, the Wings have given up 218
goals, 11 more than they have scored. The defensive techniques
of Demers are showing as 14 teams have given up more goals than
the- Wings.
The New Jersey Devils, the third worst team in the league pro-
vide another comparison. The Devils have scored 217 times, 10
more than the wings, but have allowed 279 scores and that's 61
more than Detroit.
Racing Kars
We spent a.couple of interesting hours at South fluron District
High School Saturday afternoon watching some 150 Cubs from
Huron District racing their cars:
it was the annual Kub Kar rally and the competition was keen
as the small cars raced down a ramp. The weight of. these cars
is limited to five ounces or less.
We know a couple of boys who are already planning. on mak-
ing improvements on their vehicles or building new ones for next
year. Kurt Marchle of Goderich was the winner for the second
straight year,
