The interest of researchers was initially aroused by the low death rate from heart disease seen in Greenland Eskimos. Since the same didn't hold true for Eskimos who had moved to Denmark, it was concluded that the large amounts of fatty -marine foods (like seal and whale meat. including blubber) that the Eskimos were eating somehow protected_ them from heat( disease. In further studies which were con- ducted on European and North American men,. fish.oils were found to lower blood cholesterol levels. Fish oils are composed of fatly acids. To start the meeting we ate a delightful meal, composed of everyone's expert cooking of one recipe each. All the recipes were from our project books and were directed to individuals on their own, surviving with style. Discussion centered around feeding .yourself well. Not just learning to use spoons, forks and knives either. We discussed places we could get food, nutrients and their importance in every day meals, calorie content ver- sus nutrient content, seasons and food, convenience versus homemade and food budgeting. All the topics we discussed, we found to be important and useful yet some of the topics many of us had never thought much about before. Our junior leader had the group analyze a few sample meals, to see how much we had learned. The business of the meeting includ- ed the planning of the next meeting, to be held at Karen Miller's and the selecting of a club name. Thus, there is less chance of plaques forming on the inside of artery walls. ( Plaque deposits on artery walls cause hardening of the arteries. If enough plaque builds up, the artery can become narrowed or closed right off. Then, the heart may not receive enough oxygen, resulting in angina or, if severe enough, caus- ing a heart attack.) Thinner blood and fewer clots means less hardening of the arteries and possibly Tess -heart disease. No studies have found abnormally pro- longed bleeding caused by moderate consumption o1 fish oils. Several studies have also looked at the anti inflammatory effect of omega :3 fatty acids which may play a role in reducing arthritis. Its role in cancer prevention has also been investigated. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in sardines, salmon, mackerel, tuna. herring and rainbow trout. Leaner fish, like cod, flounder and haddock have lower amounts. Shellfish also contain these fats. As good as all this sounds, some caution is advised. Some people are promoting supplements of fish oils, but these preparations may also con- tain substances that are harmful. There is no evidence that omega-3 acids will reverse any pre-existing cardiovascular disease. We don't know how much is needed to achieve beneficial effects, and whether other dietary changes are necessary to con- tribute to its effects. 2 Because all of the answers are not yet in, follow a prudent diet. Eating fish on a regular basis is something that's been apartof good nutritional advice for years. Omega-3 fatty acids are just one more reason to include fish in your meals.
