Weaner
Most peple feel that placing wean-
ed pigs on decks or in cages is the way
to go. After all. pigs on decks are
clean and dry - but are they healthy'?
Experience tells us that weaned pigs
on decks need a constant temperature
of at least 80 degreesF t 26.6
degrees('). Even in a well insulated
barn, this takes a lot of additional
heat.
For example, most successful pro-
ducers . feel that the inlet 'air for a
weaner room should be drawn from
a preheat area such as a hallway or
heated feed room. Normally this air
should be heated to approximately 65
degreesF" (18 degreesC) before it
enters the weaner room. Of course,
this inlet air temperature will vary
depending on the number of pigs in
the room, size of pigs, amount of in-
sulation etc... -
Too often, 1 find producers forcing
• the pigs to heat the room. This usual-
ly results in high humidity. high am-
monia, stale air and sick pigs. If a
producer isn't prepared to add enough
heat to keep the air fresh. maybe the
pigs would be better off on solid floors
snuggled into a good layer of straw.

Creative leadership, team building
and priority management are the
goals of the upcoming 1987 Regional
4-11 Club- Leaders' Conference. The
1987 theme, "The Keys of 4-11 Leader-
ship" will he highlighted at the
meeting in Atwood, Tuesday, March
3.
Feature speaker at the conference
is Bob Gernon, a human resource
development specialist.
One hundred 4-11 club leaders are
expected to attend. Over 5,000 men
and women in Ontario dedicate their
time to developing the skills of 19,000
4-11 members.
Jack Hagarty, director, rural
organizations and services branch of
the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food, says "The conference will
provide 4-11 leaders with an oppor-
tunity to exchange ideas, develop
human and technical skills and be
recognized for the important con-
tribution they make to the 4-11
program.
Youth and their needs have chang-
ed. The Ministry feels that the need
is greater than ever before to provide
leaders with the skills and knowledge
which will allow them to provide a
local club program that is exciting
and challenging".
In 1987, 4-11 members can choose
projects ranging from foods,
veterinary, livestock, field crops,
clothing, farm safety, life skills and
farm machinery. Leader training is
available for all leaders who want to
get involved.
