The Exeter Hawks jumped into a
quick one -game lead in their northern
division semi-final with Seaforth, Sun-
day, posting a 5-1 triumph on the
Centenaires' home ice.
Second game in the best -of -seven
was played last night (Tuesday) at
the rec centre.
Third game in the series will be in
Hensel! on Saturday night at 8:30.
That's a home game for the Hawks.
Tuesday, the teams go back to
Seaforth for the fourth game. The
fifth game will be in Exeter the
following Friday, if needed, with the
sixth set for Seaforth on Sunday.
Netminder Dave Rook was a key
part of the initial playoff win as he
kicked out 36 shots. He was finally
beaten on a powerplay with less than
four minutes left in the game to spoil
his shutout bid.
After a scoreless first period, the
Hawks hit the sheet early in the se=
cond when Dan Nairn finished off a
three-way play with Scott Lovie find
Steve Batten.

near the midway mark of the middle
frame turned out to be the winner
with George Pratt and Jeff Dalrym-
ple picking up the assists.
The Hawks took control of the game
in the final 30 seconds of the second
when they scored two quick tallies.
Lovie notched the first on a solo effort
and then Nairn came back with his se-
cond of the game in the final second
of the period. Pratt -picked up the
assist on that one:
Gould added an insurance tnarker
early in the third when he connected
for his second powerplay tally of the
afternoon, with Pratt again setting up
tTThThe was again on the chippy
side as the two squads have built up
a bit of a feud over the past couple of
weeks. No fisticuffs broke out, but the
Centenaires sat out 19 minors and the
Hawks were in the sin -bin for 18.
Rook was at his best in the first
period when he turned aside 16 shots
as the defending OHA champions
stormed to the attack. The Hawks
finished the game with 44 shots on the
Seaforth net.
The Hawks gained a tie and a win
as they finished regular *ason play
with a home -and -home battle with the
last place Clinton Mustangs.
The Clinton crew ended any hope

Mohawks three up in playoffs
The Exeter Mohawks are within
one game of reaching the Ontario
HockeyAssociption Senior 'B' Central
Division finals.
The Mohawks defeated the New
Hamburg Towers 8-5 in New Ham-
burg Friday night and prevailed by a,
score of 5-3 at the South Huron Rec
Centre Sunday night to take a three
game to none lead.
The fourth game of a best -of -seven
semi-final series goes tonight,_
Wednesday in New Hamburg at 8:30.
p.m. with a fifth game if necessa
back in Exeter Sunday night, March
1 at 7:30 p.m.
A pair of Royals meet in the other
semi-final series. The Tavistock
Royals eliminated the Harriston
Blues in three straight games and the
Hillsburg Royals ousted Elora by win-
ning 6-5 in double overtime of the fifth
and deciding game of their series.
Mohawks captain Randy Kraut was
a tower of strength Friday night as his
club stopped the Towers by an 8-5
count. -
The Mohawks jumped into a 4-1
first period lead and were able to hold
• that margin throughout the -game.---

In the last four mintues of the
period, Tuckey scored on a power
play with assists going to Baker and
Barry Baynham and Gates fired a
successful shot with assists credited
to Campbell and Eccles.
Defenceman Randy Kraut who has
been on a torrid scoring pace in recent
games notched his first of two in the
second minute of the middle stanza on
a pass from Scott Eccles ander`rate--

aeperiod power play for the Mohawks
resulted in a goal from the stick of
Scott Eccles. Providing the necessary
passes were Barry Baynham and
Randy Kraut.
In the final period, captain Kraul
took command of the Exeter ship and
completed his hat trick performance
with two shots that eluded Rich
Baechler in the New Hamburg goal:
He scored at 6:53 on passes from
Barry Baynham and Al Gates on a
power play and at the 16 minute
mark converted passes from Pete
Tuckey and Bryan Baker.
Second period is decisive
Two unanswered goals in the se-
cond period proved, to be the dif-
ference as the Mohawks downed the
Towers 5-3 to take a good grip on the
series.
Each team notched single scores in
the first 20 minutes of play as Joe
Scherer hit for the Towers at 51
seconds and four minutes later Norm
Campbell replied for the Exeter club
on passes from Scott Eccles and Al
Gates.
The make the difference scores in
the middle period were fired by Scott
Eccles and Pete Tuckey with assists
going to Doug Latta, Campbell. Mike
Clark and Randy Kraut.

-In the first -11 minutes of the dos-
ing session, Mohawks scored twice to
take a four goal margin on the
scoreboard.
On a power play at 5:19 Al Gates hit
on passes from Ron Elliott and Scott
Eccles and five minutes later with the
Mohawks playing a man short John
Remick registered on an unassisted
effort.
The Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee
wees were in Mitchell on the weekend
to participate in a 'C' tournament and
came up with two excellent
performances.
Both games went into - overtime _
shootouts with the Exeter club
defeating Mitchell in the first after
playing to a 5-5 tie -and in the second
they were beaten by Howick in
another shootout. The two teams had
played to a 3-3 draw.
In regulation play against Mitchell,
Steve DuBarry was tops for the locals
with a two goal effort. Scoring in
single fashion were David Schwindt,
Jamie Cornish and Joel Campbell.
Jason Heywood led the playmakers
with two assists. Helping on one goal
apiece were Cornish, DuBarry and
Campbell.
In the shootout Jason Heywood and
Jamie Cornish scored for Exeter to
get the victory. Goalie Shawn
McFalis stopped six of seven Mitchell
overtime shooters.
Steve DuBarry again led the Exeter
club with two successful shots in the
eventual loss to Howick. One came on
an unassisted effort and the other on
passes from Jason Heywood and Jim
Ahrens. Brett Lammie converted a
.pass from Joel Campbell tecomplete

The Exeter midgets dropped three
straight games in OMHA round robin
playoffs. -
The losses were 6-4 to Ridgetown
and 4-2 and 5-1 to Lambeth.
Against Ridgetown, Jeff Hoffman
led the Exeter scoring with a two goal
effort. Scoring in single fashion were
Steve Watson and Paul Mellecke.
Jeff Kints led the playmakers with
two assists while Steve Lingard, Dar-
ryl McCann, Bryan Quinn and Bill
Vandeworp each helped set up one
goal.
In the 4-2 loss to Lambeth Paul
Mellecke and Sharon Moore shot the
Exeter goals with Darryl McCann
getting two assists and"Moore one.
Jim Dickins scored an unassisted
goal in the 5-1 defeat to Lambeth.
The RSD Panthers were eliminated
in local novice playoffs on the
weekend in Parkhill.
After defeating Watford 4-2 and
Lucan 2-1, the Panthers dropped a 1-0
decision to the host Parkhill team.
In the win over Watford, Kevin
Ross, Luke Sims, Jeff Inch and cap-
tain .Bryce Hann scored for Exeter
with assists going to Lucas Forrest,,
Jeff Inch, Geoff Hann, Luke Sims.
Ryan Beckett and Kevin Ross.
Geoff Mauer and Bryce Hann were
the marksmen for the Panthers in the
victory over the Lucan Oilers. The
lone goal for Lucan came from the
stick of Ryan Herbert on a pass from
Scott Thompson.
WIN FOR PETITES
The Exeter Petite Ringette tete

playoff -game. Saturday. Exeter came
out on top winning 5-4..
The goals for Exeter came in single
fashion from Jill Sararas, Cara Gard-
ner, Carrie Simpson,Cheyenne
Westlake, and Lisa Forrest.
Assisting on the scoring were
Christie Bedard, Cara Gardner, Car-
rie Simpson. Lisa Forrest and Katie
Armstrong.
Terri Duckworth scored three goals
for Goderich, with a single coming
from Kristine Mclvor.
The girls travel to Goderich Sunday
for a 6:30 game.

The Exeter Bullets pee wees won
the Lamton-Middlesex houseleague
championship Tuesday as they
played -0' a 3- r on.
The win gave the Exeter club a
total of 28 points over the season, two
more than Ilderton who needed a win
to force a playoff for the top spot.
An unassisted goal from the stick of
Ryan Lindenfield with less than two
minutes remaining in the third period
gave the Bullets the league title.
Captain Mark Lynn scored one of
the other goals on a solo dash and pro-
vided the pass for the first score of the
night for Lindenfield.
Scoring for Ilderton were Mike
Gionelli, Mike Robb and T. Wolsey.
The Exeter . Waxers kept their
championship hopes alive in the
OMHA novice round robin playoffs
Sunday as they played to a 1-1 tie with
Byron.
The Waxers will be at home at the
South Huron Rec Centre Friday at
4:45 to meet St. Thomas. After that
they have two games left with
Petrolia and one each with Forest and
St. Marys. The Byron club remains
undefeated.
in Sunday's tie with Byron Chris
McDonald scored the only Exeter
goal on an unassisted effort at 3:31 of
the* third period and with only 42
seconds left in the game Byron notch-
ed the equalizing score.

The Exeter Broncos scored an ex-
hibition 6-4 victory over the Mitchell
atom club in Hensall Sunday
afternoon.
Paul Charrette and ian Jean led the
Broncos in a scoring way with two
goals apiece. Scoring in single fashion
were Ryan Stuart and Sean McCann.
Jeff Lingard led in playmaking with
a pair of assists while Ryan Stuart,
Sean Mc't a'pn and Paul Charrette
each helped , up one score.

when they rallied for a 3-3 tie on their
home ice on Wednesday. As it turned
out, the tie was not too expensive for
the Hawks as the Brussels Bulls whip-
ped Seaforth on Friday night to take
first place.
Clinton scored twice in the final
period while holding the Hawks off the
sheet to post the stalemate.
Sean Whiteford, Steve Gould and
Jeff Dalrymple scored for the locals
with Dale Timmermans assisting on
a pair and single assists going to Jeff
Reid and George Pratt.
In Exeter, Friday, the Hawks.
geared up for the playoffs with a 9-3
trouncing of the Mustangs, who show-
ed up with only 12 skaters.

The locfils opened up an 8-0 lead by
the end of two and then relaxed in the
third to allow the Mustangs to
outscore them by a 3-1 margin.
Steve Gould paced the attack with
two goals and singles came off the
sticks of George Pratt,Scott Louie,
Jeff Dalrymple, Scott Bogart, Jim
Lewis, Bill Fisher and Dave Casson.
Pratt, Gould, Fisher and Dean
Schram earned twoassistseach and
helping out on one were Reid, Bogart,
Timmermans, Nairn. Lewis and
Ansems.
Dave Rook recorded the win with
an easy night. lie had only 24 shots to
handle. with half those corning in the
final stanza. . •

Irish two games up
in semi-final play
The Lucan Irish have moved two
games ahead of the Mount Brydges
Bulldogs in the first round of playoffs
in the OIIA Western Junior 'D' south
division -in two very differently played
games.
In Lucan Saturday night. the Irish
came from behind to win 5-4 in a very
cleanly played game with only eight
minor penalties called by referee
Steve Baker.
In Mount Brydges Sunday night it
was a different story as the Irish
jumped into an early 4-0 lead and
were forced to hold back a strong at-
tempt by the Bulldogs late in the third
period. The game was penalty filled
and the only two Mount Brydges
scores came with the Irish playing a
man short.
The third game of the best -of -seven
series will be played tonight. Wednes-
day at 8:15 p.rn. at the Lucan Com-
munity Centre and the fourth 'tilt is
back in Mount Brydges Saturday
night. If a fifth game is necessary it
goes Monday, March 2 in Lucan.
-' Lucan Saturday each notched
single goals in the first period. Car-
son Howlett registered for Mount
Brydges and Brad Hodgins replied for
the Irish on a three-way passing com-
bination with Wayne Urbshott and
Joe Febrey with four seconds to go on
a power play.
In the first half of the middle frame
it was Steve Wright putting the
Bulldogs ahead and Scott Denomy
again knotting the score for Lucan on
a pass from Grant Larsen.

shots for Mount Brydges by the 14
minute mark of the second stanza and
with less than two minutes to go cap-
tain Bob Thirlwall cut the Lucan
deficit to a single goal as he hit on
passes from Mark Bannen and Brad
Hodgins. .
The third. period was only 36
seconds old when Brad Hodgins not-
ched his second score of the night.
SHUFFLEBOARD
A Valentine's pairs competition
featured Tuesday's regular shuf-
fleboard play
Howard Johns and Iva Blair team-
ed up to win with a score of 313. Next -
came Charles Tindall and Verda
Lightfoot 296. Joe Gosar and Olive
Essery 262 and Albert Hummel and
Olga Davis 255.
In Thursday's play. Meine Eizenga
was best for the men at 433 followed
by Albert Hummel 419 and Howard
Johns 394.
Best for -the ladies was Jean Hern
with a 411 score. Olive Essery scored
370 and Verda Lightfoot :149.
This time Mark Bannen and Bob
• Thirlwall assisted.
'The clock had moved' past the 12
minute mark when Brad Muir con-
verted a pass from Paul Barnes to
give the Irish the margin of victory:
In the first period Sunday in Mount •
Brydges, Bob Thirlwall put -the Irish
quickly on top with a goal just past the
three minute mark with Rob Hardy
and Scott Denomy assisting and at the
halfway mark and a Lucan power
play in full swing Mark Bannen
registered on a pass from Brad Muir.
At less than five minutes of the final
frame, Wayne Urbshott fired what
proved to be the winning goal on a
pass from Scott Denomy.
With less than nine minutes to go
Bob Thirlwall put his team up by four
on a three-way combination with
Jesse Crawford and Grant Larsen.
Penalties cut into the Lucan lead in
the last few minutes of the game as
Chris Berthelot and Scott Lucio hit for
the home team on power plays to
make the score.much closer, butt hat
was as close as they could come.
Tweens win
The Exeter ringette Tweens won
two games this week in the first round
of playoffs downing I luron Park 6-1 at
Huron Park Friday and 9-2 in Hensall.

Becci Farquhar with a hat trick ef-
fort was the best goal producer in the
second Exeter victory. Giselle Char-
rette was next in line with two suc-
cessful shots and single scores were
notched' by Janel Papple, Bryden
Gryseels, Julia Merner and Jayne
Rowe.
Jayne Rowe . picked up three
assists:Carrie Lovie. Becci Farquhar
and Giselle Charrette assisted on two
goals apiece and single assists went
to Liz Coates. Julia Webster and Julia
Merner
For Huron Park. Shauna Hecker
