Church service
Rev. Robert Matheson was in
charge of the church service on Sun-
day morning. The responsive reading
was read from Psalm 112. We sang
the children's hymn "God Sees The
Little Sparrow Fall" and Rev.
Matheson told the children a story en-
titled "How's Your Taste".
The scripture lesson was read from .
Isaiah 58:3-9a, 1 Corinthians 2:1-11,
Matthew 5:13-24. The sermon was en-
titled "It Could Use Some More
Spice".
We know that the. Old Testament
prophets were very often critics of
their own society and critical oflhase
who abused positions or offices of
authority. Isaiah, in this morning's
Old Testament lesson, speaks of the
abuse of religion tor personal gain.
There are those who have been
fasting because they feel it would give
them a direct line to God. Isaiah tells
these people they are mistaken and
misdirected.
From Isaiah's lifetime to that of
Jesus things had not changed very
much. In our second passage from the
Sermon on the Mount we find Jesus
describing his disciples as 'salt of the
earth'. The disciples are the salt of the
earth: they already are - it's not
something they are yet to become.
_ Lately it has become a trend for
politicians -to -wear their religious -con-
victions - to publicly declare their
religion - while campaigning for of-
fice. It is rather ironic that in North
American political life we have more
scandals and more distance between
the governing and the governed than
we had before–this trend was- so
apparent.
