Two area fires
,ire broke out in two area
residents' chimneys on Friday, the
13th. The GB and area brigade was
summoned to a chimney fire at the
home of Ruth and Louis DeBrum,
'River Rd. on Friday morning. It was
kept under control.
it was different story later on the
13th at Roger Farrington's residence,
Pinedale Subdivision. Roger's son
Jeff went upstairs and noticed smoke
and a crackling sound in the wall. He
immediately called his dad who call-
ed the fire department onto the scene.
Flames had spread down the
chimney into the wall behind the
pipes. Considerable fire damage was
done inside when panelling and in-
sulation were removed to extinguish
the flames there. estimate of the
damage has not been determined.
Although the snow was extremely
hard to work with, the children of the
GBP school started the carnival off
with their sculpturesFriday morning.
The winning exhibit located at the
seniors apartments, Sauble Court,
was a snail and dragon. Captain
Cullen Kobe and his team, John
Beemer, Travis Shepherd, Bobi-Jo

names will be engraved. The plaque
will be displayed for one year at the

Gerry Hillman and Councillor Mar-
sha Lemon had a tough time deciding.
Local businesses that were open tor

business was great. Visitors also were
able to sample their favorite french
fries from Our Andrews booth
downtown. Many people enjoyed the
Legion steak barbeque on Saturday
night before the dance. Gib Roane
and helpers Marilyn and Wendy Clark
served up over 150 dinners. CKSL an-
nouncer Norm-Borge was do hand -to-
take in the weekend activities. -
A Michigan team-. who. frequently -

team snow sculpture contest. They
take home $1000.00 and the trophy for
One year. Eric Johnson, Janet
.Johnson and Julie Cole were very

Jennifer Wadsworth
The team on site ho. 1 was from an
advertising and printing -business in
London, Chuck Culp as team leader.

the waves rides a tiny submarine with
a mermaid and a sea gull perched on
board. It looked like something out of
a fairy tale - my- personal favorite.
Site no. 2 featured a large, brooding
snow devil, a very impressive piece
of work from Ted Hayes' award win-
ning team in London. That old devil
was quite a crowd pleaser too!
A local -team from For Goodness
Sake showed their talents on site nb.
4 with children sliding down a hillside.
There were several special touches
too. like a tiny evergreen tree on top
the hill, and a polar bear grinning out
of a cave on the side.
Best Cooling, of Grand Bend: gave
a noble effort on site. no. 6 with a
mighty polar bear.
If you haven't seen these works of
art as yet, come down soon, before the
sun melts them away.
There were tots of other snow
sculptures in the open competition
too, with Pinedale taking first prize
for an Eskimo boy ice fishing in front
of his igloo, surrounded by some love-
ly sculpted sled dogs. The Thirsty Fox
featured, what else, a red fox in a top
hat. The ICA showed off with a great
Max Head Room inscribed "C -C=
Catch the Wave, Coke!" The Country
Sampler made a large duck, with
baby block in colored letters to say "1
love country".

ching on orange carrot with several
more carrots in. the ground.
Evergreen, branches gave the carrots
a realistic touch. This was the
favorite -of all the kids! •
A lovely white sailboat was beach-
ed in front of Young Classic's Hair
Salon and a wily wee green
leprechaun perched in front of Fin-
negans. The Family Heirloom's im-
aginative contribution showed a
fisherman placidly comtemplating
his. catch, about to be swallowed by -an
enormous, brightly colored shark! A
funny spectacled snowman is silting
in the lot of the Brewer's Retail.
Benguin the Penguin, twice as large -
as life, sits by the Colonial, waving his
"Winter's a Beach" flag. They did a
great job on his colors. The best use
of colors showed up on a sleeping
dragon by two enterprising young
ladies, Tamara and Pani Woods. This
dozing dragon, hook in paw', leans
against a tree near tile United
Church.: his sides brilliantly polka,
dotted and face of rainbow hues.

Twenty teams competed for the
trophy with the London players,
Hamisco, beating out the local "Hob-
bies Rockets" made up of Dashwood
and area players. Kadlecik's team
won their first game against the Ex-
eter Legion, then were edged out in
the second round. Paul Maguire found
it really difficult gelling around those
lumpy bases on his home run. The sun
was very welcome in the freezing
temperatures.- - -
• Another traffic conjested area was
,the street running from Lake lid. to
River ltd.. The ole' river bed skating
rink never had so many skaters on it
before. Area firemen cooked up free
hot dogs and hot chocolate for hun-
dreds of outdoor enthusiasts.
Plan on joining us next year at
Grand Bend's second annual winter
carnival!
